A star is born

With her very first appearance on television, she became Balaji's favourite chhoti behen playing Bani on 'Kasamh Se'. Amongst the hundreds of perfectly done-up faces on the small screen, Prachi Desai was quickly noticed and loved by her audiences. She soon took a big leap into Bollywood when she landed a role in Farhan Akhtar's 'Rock On' Young, beautiful and talented, Prachi's journey has just begun.

Has acting always been your dream?
I must admit that I have always dreamt of becoming an actress. But at the same time, I never thought this dream would come true. I come from an absolutely non-filmy background. I studied in Panchgani and had no clue how to follow my dream. After completing my 10th standard, I told my mother I did not want to go to college. She convinced me, however, to go to a Pune college where my sister was studying. I agreed because I knew that to pursue an acting career, I would need to have completed my 12th grade exams.
So how did 'Kasamh Se' happen?
When I was studying in Pune, my sister showed me an ad for an 18-day modelling workshop conducted by Bunty Prashant and Dipali. I immediately enrolled for it. I knew that it would help me. It was the perfect starting point for aspiring models. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. This was around the same time that Balaji auditions were taking place in Pune. My HSC finals were also on! But at the workshop I was advised to go for the audition for the sake of experience. They said it wasn't necessary for Balaji to sign me on immediately. However, after the audition I was selected and asked to come to Mumbai. And that was that. I have never looked back.
