I have heard a story which I'd like to share with all:
There was kid who was curious about sex. He asked his mom but his mom was hesitant and said that he'll learn in due time. But the boy was still curious. So he Google it and finds bunch of po*n sites. He goes and looks at the videos. Now the question is: Was that right? Is the info about sex being gathered in a clean and positive way? I think parents should be open with their children. My parents always talk to me openly about sex, drugs and so on. I don't see the harm. In fact it's harmf if we aren't aware of all this.
That is a very big problem that society fails to acknowledge. A lot of kids are driven by curiosity and the first exposure to sex turns out to be po*n, either what they find or from peers. Curiosity for po*n cannot be eliminated, but a parent can set in a good foundation on what sex entails, some ethics and morals, about respecting people and not objectifying them. If parents set a healthy foundation regarding some issues children may still end up watching po*n, but they may not be taken in by some of the negative portrayals.
My parents have been pretty great. In fact I have great respect for my mom. I think she instilled a lot of fundamental values in us. When we were teens other parents were fretting about what TV kids watched, what movies they watched, what they did etc - while my mom was quite liberal - she always told us/tells us that if children are raised properly - they will not be taken in the wrong direction by media.
Anyway, my story related to news. I was a newspaper reader. It was for comics, TV schedule and cricket news. 😆 One day I see and AIDS awareness ad. It was when I was 10-11 or so. I knew a little about AIDS, not much. The ad read that an STD could lead to AIDS. I freaked out. I was unaware that STD was sexually transmitted disease. For me STD was how we called people far away. Subscriber Trunk Dialing. I freaked out on how an STD call could cause AIDS. 😆
There was no google then. Windows 3.11 was being developed. I was also a self learner. I asked why only when stumped. If I did not know something, I looked it up. I pulled out my resources - a massive Merriam Webster dictionary, a reference book ABC's of the human body and started searching and reading. At the end of it I was like, oh thats what it is, oh thats what happens, oh but yeah I am never doing that, it seems to be gross and unhygienic. Besides boys are always full of cooties.
That was how a newspaper ad led to my sex education.
