Drama is a part of every reality show, so please stop making Indians seem as if we are below everyone else:
Yes Drama is a part of every reality show in India because its so pre-planned and scripted to cater the India audience. But in the whole process we don't realize that this show is shown in more that 160 countries and not just in India. So why make a reality show that is only meant for the Indian mindset and yet showed in so many countries. I am an Indian too and I am not making Indians seem below anyone. Just trying to tell the DID team to raise the standards of the show. Most of us in India love hollywood films more, love the foreign serials like freinds, So you think you can dance, full house, Desperate housewives, etc. Ask any European or American have they seen the serials called Jyoti, Bandini, Na aana is desh mein lado, or Dance India Dance and the answer will be a big NO....
Why would they watch such fake drama on a reality show. Nothing is real in a reality show esp. in India. I know this because I have done a reality show.
You simply cannot compare Indians watching English shows to the West not watching Indian shows. Here in the UK, if you want to pay for Zee then you have to pay an extra monthly subscription which can be quite costly so I do not understand why an average person living in the UK or US would decide to subscribe to an Indian channel when they do not even understand the language. Now if we look at India, I know a lot of young people watch FRIENDS, SYTYCD etc like you mentioned but think about it logically. These kids have their first language, which is their state language, usually Hindi as a second language and their 3rd language is often English. Now let's look at the west, they cannot understand Hindi so how do you expect them to subscribe to Zee and watch DID even if they wanted to? You simply cannot compare the two countries. India has recently had a rise in the dominance of the English language which would explain why they watch all these american shows. But I don't see Hindi being spoken by majority of the population in western contries. Now you tell me, how likely do you think Indians are to watch a Czechoslovakian dance reality show?šor even a french reality show for that matter?š
However, do not underestimate the influence India now has in the west. On channel 4 in the UK, the month of January has been dedicated to 'Indian winter' This means all their prime time slots have been dedicated to indian shows/documentaries etc. Last week, they played OmShanti Om and it was amazing how everyone on FB was talking about the movie. Black, white, eastern european, a lot of them watched the movie and stayed up from 10-1am to watch it and absolutely loved it!š
You are acting as if you know these contestants and as if you know they are usually rebellious against their parents.
Answering your above question, Yes I know some of these contestants and many other people on DID. They are not rebellious against their parents but they don't even do so much drama in their real life. They respect their parents and they love them and so do the parents in return. They are thankful to them but my point is that so much of rubbish is not needed on a Dance reality show. U dance , u perform and if you are appreciated then u thank god and ur parents and move on....
Again, you need to look at the cultural context. If we were presented with a contestant who has ran away from home left their parents to participate in DID, then we are likely to not connect with them much. However, if we are presented with someone who appreciates the support their parents have given them, then we are more likely to vote for them. It is a family show an the Indian mentality definitely plays a big role in it all. If the producers wish to spend time on contestants and their parents then let it be. Even I won't lie when I say it was fun having Mayuresh's dadi come on the show last season, talk about his shaadi and all lol. Even when Terence's mum came, it was so cute to watch. This is what we as an Indian audience like to watch so that is what they will show.š
If the judges sat there with no emotional connection, just criticising the daners then I don't think this show would be what it is. The audience would grow to dislike the judges:
Judges have all the right to be emotional as they grow to be very close to them. They rehearse with the contestants for more than 10 hours a day. But when their dancers make small technical errors which professional can spot then they cannot say that it was a good performance. They need to be strict because that will help the dancers to become better. If the performance was flawless and then u get emotional because the song and the dance touched u so much that u couldn't control then its still okay.
I hope you get the point.
I am saying these things because I belong to the dance world and I know most of them on DID. So I also know what is happening behind the scenes too.... At this stage they should just focus on dance and not think of BOLLYWOOD FILMS at all.
I wonder how many people in India would give up the chance to work in a Bollywood movie if offered one?šThis stage offers so much and it is completely up to each person what path they would like to pursue post-DID. Maybe some of them don't have it in them to be great choreographers, but they may be great dancers. People should do whatever they feel comfortable doing. Some will open dance schools, some will try their luck in choreography, others will try to act.
But Definitely DID is doing very well and the dancers are doing a good job. But I have high expectations and my standards are very high for DID so I will keep criticizing and hope that DID team read my comments at least consider and give a thought to what I am saying...
Thank you!
