In the 70's 80's and 90's world class movies were made in India mainly in the languages of Bengali(West Bengal) and Malayalam(Kerala) and few movies in Hindi . That time is considered as the 'Golden Age' of Indian Cinema'. World renowened directors of the time include Satyajit Ray, G. Aravindan, Mrinal Sen, Adoor Gopalakrishnan e.t.c. These directors won National Awards in 'Best Director' category multiple times. They have won awards in numorous International film festivals.

I'm a lover of good cinema and have watched a good number of Indian as well as foreign movies. In my opinion the above ten directors are the best that Indian cinema has ever seen. It's my personal opinion ofcourse. There are other great directors including Bharathan, Rituparno Ghosh, Bimal Roy, Hariharan, Satyan Andikkad, John Abraham, Lenin Rajendran e.t.c.

I think Satyajit Ray should take away the cake because he had directed many world-class Bengali movies like Pather Panchali, Jalsaghar, Gopi Gyne Bagha Byne, Aguntuk etc.. He also wrote the Feluda books which are now quite popular in Indian books. I highly recommend you to read his the Feluda detective books. Really good.😊
