It's not everyday that you encounter a 24-year-old youngster whose grandma begs her to step out of home in short dresses and go partying more often, in the hope that she finds a boyfriend. This is just one of the many things that sets actress Sonam Kapoor apart from her contemporaries. How many others are equally passionate about being behind the camera as they are about being in front of it. And how many obsessively watch crime drama (Bones, House and Criminal Minds) every opportunity they get!
We caught up with the dazzling Sonam when she was in the city to grace an event at C Krishniah Chetty and Sons. On her upcoming film Ayesha, "I am really excited cos' I get to play 'Emma'!" she says with a sparkle in her eye. In this film adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Emma, Sonam dons the avatar of a chic, crazy, confused Delhi girl who is always meddling with other people's lives. "It's the coming of age story of a girl, something that very few movies in India portray. Also, the film is being produced by my sister Rhea," she beams.
A contract binds her from spilling the beans on her other much-awaited film I Hate Luv Stories. But nothing can stop her from revealing that she is a firm believer in love. "I believe in being married to the same person forever, and you need to find a person you feel that way about, however long it takes. I will meet my knight in shining armour someday! Doesn't everyone?!" she says.
If you're wondering why this gorgeous romantic is still single, she brushes away queries on the topic with a dash of humour, "Well, Ranbir is too good a friend to be my 'boyfriend' and Imran is already engaged!"
Sonam is touted as one of the most fashionable actresses in the industry. You'll never catch her with a hair out of place or a fashion blooper that will make the shutterbugs go berserk. "I think I just have fun with my fashion and love wearing my outfits," she says modestly. Ask her what sacrifices she has made to attain the svelte, enviable figure that she has today, and she whispers, "Junk food!! I work very hard to stay this way."
Sonam may not have too many friends in the industry (Aarti Shetty and Pooja Shetty Deora are her only ones, she says), but there's much to be thankful for. And this five-foot-nine statue of talent reminds herself to be grateful for those things every single day. "The tattoo on my hip bone is the Chinese symbol for contentment. I look at it everyday and feel an immense sense of gratitude for everything that has come my way!" she smiles.
