I came across this article in the paper today.. of how H&M destroys brand new merchandise it is unable to sell.. if you look at from there perspective.. they avoid doing that since anything like that would just bring the value of their name down.. in the article they said they'll stop slashing the clothes and agreed to donate them..but i highly doubt thts gonna happen..😆😆

looking at the situation frm H&M perspective.. wht do you think they should do.. ?

would you want every bumm on the street wearing the same merchandise as you..?

Clothing Retailer Says It Will No Longer Destroy Unworn Garments

The clothing retailer H & M promised on Wednesday to stop destroying new, unworn clothing that it cannot sell at its store in Herald Square, and would instead donate the garments to charities.

The practice was discovered by Cynthia Magnus, a graduate student at the City University of New York, who found bags of unworn but mutilated clothing that had been thrown away by H & M on West 35th Street. She also found bags of new Wal-Mart garments with holes punched through them.

After Ms. Magnus wrote to H & M's headquarters in Sweden and got no response, she contacted The New York Times. More slashed clothing was found Monday night on 35th Street and reported in the About New York column on Wednesday.

"It will not happen again," said Nicole Christie, a spokeswoman for H & M in New York. "We are committed 100 percent to make sure this practice is not happening anywhere else, as it is not our standard practice."

Ms. Christie said it was H & M's policy to donate unworn clothing to charitable groups. She said that she did not know why the store on 34th Street was slashing the clothes, and that the company was checking to make sure that none of its other stores were doing so.

A Wal-Mart spokeswoman, Melissa Hill, said she had been unable to learn why new clothing with the store's tags had been destroyed, but added that the company typically donated or recycled such items.

One charitable program, the New York Clothing Bank, was set up by the city when Edward I. Koch was mayor to accept unworn clothing and to protect the retailers from people who might use the donations to get store credit or undercut sales.

"I would welcome H & M, Wal-Mart and every enterprise that presently is destroying new clothing to call me immediately," said Mary Lanning, chairwoman of the Clothing Bank.

I don't like their clothes anyways....it's not even worth donating...but I have seen gals like them here...
On serious note, yes it should be donated rather then wasting clothes when there are so many people don't have any thing to wear or wearing same clothes in order to cover their body....I do work with homeless people groups and I can understand the anger against this act...we should protest against it by not wearing their clothes ( I am not going to anyways😆)

This is ridiculous, they need to donate they need to donate the clothes as charity. And people who have a problem with those less fortunate wearing the same attire as them - well, they need to get their heads checked.

At the end of the day, it is their property and they are free to either sell them at clearance prices, donate them or slash and throw them away.

How would they replace their buyers? You mean to say target a different group? With you on replacing marketing folks.

OK, why would anyone slash their clothes like that? They dont get any money out of that. They could instead sell the clothes on 75 to 80% sale. Many a times, I get Ralph and Lauren clothes in Macy's at 1/3rd of its original cost when they are on sale. Atleast they would make some money out of it..! 😕

I dont think these departmental stores care about lesser fortunate people. They are only interested in making a fortune😕 For them, clothes given for charity is equal to clothes destroyed. Sad but true!

ahhh...I see it now. I thought you were talking about their customers.

That makes sense. Something somewhere is not working for sure - whether it's their design choice, pricing, merchandise quality or advertising.
