Responding to frequent criticism that his movies are based abroad to cater to NRI audiences only, Karan Johar said overseas Indians are not aliens.
"NRIs are not aliens. They are more Indian and rooted than us," the filmmaker told PTI.
"There is no peculiar reason why my films are based in foreign countries. It is just the structure of the story," the 37-year-old director-producer said.
As his forthcoming movie 'My Name is Khan' readies for release, Karan admitted that pressure would be more due to the huge success of '3Idiots'.
"Comparisons with "3Idiots" at the Box Office are inevitable. While '3Idiots' is a quintessential mainstream entertainment, 'My name...' is completely different in genre and would attract a different kind of audience," he said.
"However, '3Idiots' has become a barometer of Box Office success. The (collection) figures are amazing. I don't think any film will be able to match or even cross them. It is compliment to be called an idiot," he said.
Karan said he was disappointed with the failure of his last production 'Kurbaan' and happy that 'Wake Up Sid' was well-received.
With a bid to encourage new filmmakers - his upcoming production is the adaption of 'Stepmom' directed by newcomer Sidharth Malhotra and 'I hate Love stories' starring Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor is directed by Puneet Malhotra, he said.
However, he said he has no plans to enter into television software production.
When asked if he plans to produce non-Hindi language films, Karan said he considers himself as a Hindi filmmaker and caters to Hindi-speaking audience.
"I can not produce a film in a language which I do not know," he said.
