B-town beauties left twiddling thumbs!

Meena Iyer, TNN 5 January 2010, 12:00am IST
The Bollywood men are sorted. Shah Rukh Khan is committed to doing one film in 2010 with Kareena Kapoor (RA 1). Aamir Khan may or may not even do
that much. Salman Khan is introducing 20-something Sonakshi Sinha Dabangg) to audiences.
Ranbir Kapoor is romancing Priyanka Chopra (Anjaana Anjaani) and Katrina Kaif (Rajniti). Akshay Kumar is serenading Deepika Padukone (Houseful), Southern hottie Trisha (Khatta Meetha) and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (Action Replayy). Ajay Devgn wants Bebo (Golmaal-3)! The five or six men who matter at the box office have their screen partners more or less sorted. If they sign new films, they once again want the top five Bollywood girls to prance with them. So what happens to the rest?

Well, well. "As usual the expiry date for heroines in Bollywood is getting shorter and shorter, their shelf life is cramped,'' says trade consultant Amod Mehra. He continues, "Except the top four girls actually —whichever order you place them in — whether it is Kareena, Katrina, Priyanka and Deepika, the other girls have slipped into oblivion.'' A top hero (from the lot mentioned above) adds, "One of the heroines is so desperate for work, she is actually contemplating doing a film with an art film actor. The reason for her desperation is understandable. Last year we saw B-town beauties Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherji being phased out. In 2010, at least half-a-dozen girls of the existing lot will be quietly shown the gate.''

Another trade source points out that Bollywood has enough talent and glamour to keep it going. However, the men on top definitely want either the Top 5 or they want someone completely 'virgin'. Vidya Balan says she would much rather do just Ishqiya that revolves around her completely and follow it up with one Chenab Gandhi — again a pivotal role for her. But the fact of the matter is that even a volcano of talent like Vidya is left with little choice. Honestly, how many regular films can she find herself fitting into?

Bipasha Basu and Lara Dutta also have just one/two films on hand. Asin Thottumkal hasn't shot for a single film all through 2009. Post Ghajini she green-lighted only London Dreams and the 19th Step. London Dreams tanked and the 19th Step was shelved. Youngsters like Genelia D'Souza and Sonam Kapoor have promise but are still to make the box office grade. The fact is that 90 per cent of the B-town girls are more visible at advertisement commercial shoots, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, stage concerts and television reality shows. It is the money from these add-on revenue streams that keeps their world going around. Films? Well, what's that?

Woah that's depressing for the heroins. So where do Kajol and Aishwarya fall into this Kareena-Katrina-Deepika-Priyanka world?

Ash is very much a top heroine. Just because she chooses to be more selective doesnt mean she's "gone into obvlivion".
So if Aamir, Srk, and Hrithik do one film a year, they're being "selective and choosy", but if an Aishwarya Rai does the same, it means her "career's over"?

I honestly cannot wait for a time when the "heroes" are not the only ones that determine the damn choosing of the actress. Seriously, are we that male-centred industry that the fate of an actress who are still relatively young when compared to these 40+ actors, decree these actresses' careers?

Abhinay Deo film with Excel (starring Aish-Abhi) is supposed to start soon. Is Aish still doing it?

In anycase, Aish isn't doing one film at a time. I think the delay in Raavan is the reason she hasn't been seen this year in films. Otherwise she has quite a few projects on hand.

Kareena, PC, Katrina and Deepika are the big names right now. But Aish, Kajol are still very much there.

Rani maroed the YRF kulhadi on her own pair - hopefully doing films with other banners will get her out of that rut.

Kajol is still there because of the Khans and Karan. Not that I'm saying that she is too old or untalented to be in the industry anymore or to get offers, but seriously I think the SRKajol-Karan trio saves her butt a lot these days.
Its easier for the Bollywood actors as they will always be able to romance younger girls, even if they're 50, they will always look "younger" and will be considered as superstars, but if an actress does only one movie a year or gets older than 30, thats when she is expected to end her career. Actors who have reached their 40s will never get old to them, but thats not the case for actresses. Bollywood is sick.
Aish, Kajol, Preity, Rani...who said that their time has come? They're all talented, still hot and pretty. We will see how Kareena, PC, Katrina and Deepika will end up in 10 years. They will also experience the same thing.

thats sad...bollywood is so male-centered...srk, salman, aamir, saif, akshay and many more are over 40 and yet they are considered superstars....the fact that bollywood does not look at talent rather looks at looks and age about their actresses bothers me a lot.

Ok I'm gonna go on a lil rant here.
Bollywood, by its veyr nature, limits the screen time of women.
In an average bollywood film (i'm not speaking hte new age movies that give scope to women, I'm talking average across the years), the main ACTOR (Hero) of the film is given the most prority, while the ACTRESS (heroine) is limited ot being the LOVE INTEREST.
Very few films have actually utilized actresses in teh lead roles and givien the males less screen time and significance. Mostly, 90% of the movies (or even more I'll say) have typecast the girls as love interest. WE have had countless mult-hero films being made without the need of an established actress, but how many multi-heroine films have we had? How often have we seen a katrina and kareena together in one film without the need of an established actor? Even established actresses normally sign movies with established big actors, when its not the same case wiht the guys. Srk, saif, Aamir, Salman, Askhay will do films where htey are the main attraction and the femail lead is normally a newcomer who doesnt really have much to do.
Now, it irks me that even the established actresses liek Ash, Kareena, Rani are heading towards the same path UNLESS they change the way things are odne. Rather htan aiming towards working iwth the Khans or the biggest of heroes, aim towards working with the biggest of directors. Rather than being dependent on the hero, BECOME the hero of the film. Tha'ts their downside, coz evne today I see kareena being excited about working with teh khans. How stupid, coz one day, the KHans will move onto the younger girls, adn all the incoming males will be younger than them, so then who will they be paried with?
Tha'ts when the girl's screentime expires. When they have exhausted their pairings with the older lot, but cant exactly be paired with Ranbir, Imran and SHahid coz they're younger. So wihout the identity of a strong lead actor, they sorta get pushed away and the younger girls take over to wokr with guys ranging from IMran to Aamir.
BUT, if they work on actually doing SOLO HERIONE projects, then I dont feel they'll face the same fate as their contemporaries did in the past.
Why not have a solo heroine film with Kareena or Priyanka? Why?
I'm sure the times are changing. Today audiences just wanna see a good film. New comers come and give hits. Surely our established actresses can do the same without the aid of the Khans or bigger costars right?
And once they have established a fan base on their own merits, where audiences wanna see a movie for Kareena, or Priyanka, or just Kajol, and Aish, then they wont have htat limited screen time. Because they can start working in movies htat arent just love stories where htey are desperate to be paired wiht actors. They will have their own demand and bollywood just MIGHT break outta the stereotypical love stories nad start really making good movies on relevent issues.
Like in hollywood, actresses arent limited by the screentime, coz you have an Angeline Jolie (who aint the yougest chick on the block) doing great films liek Changeling, where she's nto dependent or paired up with any major hollywood actor, or oding a Wanted where hte guy is less known than she is, but still making it work.
