I totally agree! I thought that times would change and unfortunately they haven't :(
But I think lots of actresses next year will have a great year ... like Ash has all those pretty big movies lined up. Kareena has Stepmom..and Ra1 right? Priyanka's gonna rock...and so will Sonam and Deepika, I'm sure :)
Also I think it;s unfair to say that Kajol's still here because of the Khans and Karan. I mean, where was Karan during Fanaa?? And also "Khans" and Karan wouldn't be working with her in the first place unless she was worth it.
Edit: oh and great post desigal90, totally agree!

They did have solo movies with the actresses playing the main role... for example with PC and Kareena there was Aitraaz, then there was Fashion with PC, there was Laaga Chunari Main Daag with Rani, WYR with PC, kareena/kajol have stepmom remake and pc has 7 husbands...

all those are either women centric roles or demand a lot from these actresses.

It takes time to get to such level for women but they are working towards getting their fair share of glory. Sonam and Deepika are a lot younger and newer in the industry and therefore they are not going to get movies that lies entirely on their shoulders... they are both going to come out with good movies like Karthik calling Karthik or Aisha/I Hate Luv Storys.

But I also agree that women have to work harder in the industry to prove themselves worthy of being given such roles.

Kajol is one of the very FEW actresses, who doesnt kiss ass to acquire work. So to claim that she is STILL around because of certain names is completely futile. She is one actress who has ALWAYS worked on her own terms and called the shots herself.
And I agree with desigirl: Lack of screen space for actresses is a norm in BW, not just in today's generation even few decades ago. Its become a practice, which unfortunely no one challenged or tried to change. Thats why I find actresses like Kajol, such breath of fresh air, who really can stand her own ground, no matter who she is casted with. If you look at Kajol's film graph, her contribution in MOST of her movies, has been on par if not better than her lead co-star. Her contribution has been pretty consistent from the start off her career. You just can never visualise Kajol shown as a piece of decoration doing nothing, which is sadly what most actresses are objected too.
Lets just say I am really glad that we have actresses like Vidya and Konkana from the current crop, who have emerged as revelations in there respective movies.
Vidya was on par if not better than even Amitji in Paa! We need more of these kinda performances from the other heroines too.

So many people I am friends with do not even know Deepika's last name, so it perplexes me as to why there's unneeded hype about her when she hasn't proved anything with her flicks.

But then this is Bollywood, and only the unworthy get noticed so why am I surprised. Perhaps my friends are not into Bollywood, so they are only aware of the big names that are always highlighted on TV, and mostly stick to their movies.

Edited post from here regarding the actual topic.😆

Age discrimination in Bollywood is beyond my understanding and it irks me when actresses in their thirties are written off as being 'old.' Woah, hello? I rather have a 30 year old act in a role rather than 22 year old bimbo fake an accent or roll eyes in a film with no impact. The issue with also male centric roles dominating main stream can be transformed if the female actors wish to do good cinema - my trust as of now lies in Konkana and Vidya.

For me, Kangana was the 'hero' of Fashion rather than PC, but of course she's the girl with a funny accent, thus she always bags the supporting actress award. She stole the show from PC, no doubt.

^^^ I agree, I preferred Kangana over PC too, she was the soul of the movie.
I also think to some extent, the female actors have only themselves to blame. Esp when you see so many times, actresses just selecting movies left-right-centre, just to secure a quick hit, overlooking tthere own contribution.
Why dont we see female actors going to lengths with there roles like Aamir Khan does???? Or experiment like Amitji does???
I think BW actresses play it too safe, they really need to come out of there comfort zones, and challege themselves with better cinema.

I really liked Kangana in Fashion but it was nothing new from her... if you have seen any of her other movies, she had done a similar role in them and therefore, when I saw her I liked her acting but was not blown away. Now PC's role wasn't all that either but the fact that she mannerisms, voice modulation, the way she carried herself throughout the movie changed as she was going through different phases and that is why I would have to say I liked her far more in the movie.

I hope all the actresses have a good year. I love Kajol since my childhood, I think even if she turns 50, she'll be a superhit ...hehe And she did start her career with a SOLO movie where she had to carry the movie by herself, she didn't have a hero to back her up. He was basically supporting her in the movie. He had a special appearance role in the movie. I wish to see all the actresses having big roles.
