At last, I understood love.
"Mayank can we talk to you for a moment" asked Mr.Sharma as he came into his son room accompanied with his wife.
"Sure dad" replied mayank with a confused look on his face. He wondered since when his parents needed to ask permission to talk to him, in fact since when both of his parent needed to talk to him at this time in the night. He switched off the tv and stared at his mother who sat by his side on the bed. His father moved the chair from the computer desk and seated himself.
"So how have you been lately?" said his mum, with a nervous smile.
"erm, what kind of question is that mum?" Is it just me or there is something cooking up in their mind!
"mayank we have something important to discuss with you" started his father on a serious not, internally amused at his wife's failed attempt of building up the conversation.
"I'm listening" Don't tell me they found out I smoked. It was just for fun. Can't they understand that I am not a kid anymore!
"What have you planned for your future?"
"Not much yet, why?"
"You are 22,don't you think it's time you get settled down"
"I am working towards it.." What does he mean by settle down?Oh no here we go again," join the office" crap !
"Why don't you go straight to the point" his mother requested his father.
"What point?" mayank narrowed his eyes, looking at each of his parent in turn.
Mr.Sharma heaved a sigh before "We want you to marry nupur" he finally said
"We all know how much you two like each other" she added quickly "but I always thought you would tell me if you ever fall for a girl" displaying a certain disappointment in her pleased expressions.
"What?!" mayank almost yelled .There was a huge misunderstanding. He never like nupur to the point of marrying her. True they were inseparable whenever they were together but it was pure friendship. Not best friends, not enemies and definitely not lovers! "Me and nupur?!" his draw dropped . "You got it all wrong. I don't want to marry nupur!" he calmed down and explained.
"You guys are always glued together whenever you meet"
"and you told me the other day that only nupur could truly understand you"
"yes but it doesn't mean I love her, in fact she doesn't love me either!"
"Love is maybe not there yet but it will come"
"She is the only right girl for you".
"what is wrong you mum! I don't want to marry nupur and that is it!" he raised his voice. I can't believe they want me to marry her! The girl doesn't even believe in love!
"mayank! Watch your tone" his father scolded
"Dad I am sorry but you have got the wrong impression, I do no like nupur in that sense. Besides I don't want get married at this age" he clarified. I am too young for god sake! It's time for me to enjoy my life without any restrictions! Who wants a wife at 22!"
"Is there any other girl in your life then?" questioned shilpa, looking desperate.
"If you like someone else just tell us now"
"No I don't like anyone else" Liar! Who is Preity then? But if I mention her they would want to meet her and get us married. Better to lie!
"Then you will marry nupur" announced his father as he stood up.
"I wont!" mayank retorted stubbornly. He was angry now, how can his father make decisions about his life without consulting him? He had never imagined this.
"Mum?" he looked at her with pleading eyes.
"Just think about it, I'm sure you wont find any better life partner than her" advised shilpa. She was sadden to find out his son was not in love with nupur. She didn't want to force him either but deep in her heart she knew that her son did have some feeling for nupur. After all she was a mother and she could understand what he couldn't understand.
Mayank saw his parents leave the room. He blankly stared at the door trying to realize what just happened. Have they lost their mind! No way I'm getting married! And that too to nupur?
----------------------------
"What's for dinner?" Nupur came downstairs to the living room, changed in her pyjamas. Her sister, gungan, was smiling at her and there was an unusual silence present.
"Why are you smiling?" she frowned as she sat on her chair, ready to eat.
"You will know in a minute" whispered gungan, grinning even more.
"Nupur, your sister is smiling because she is happy for you" her father explained
"For me? Really?" she asked with a controlled smile Look like I am finally allowed to go away
"Yes, there has been a proposal for you and I am sure you will be glad to know who it is from?"
"Proposal?" nupur face dropped in a second. She gazed down at her table thinking of running away. She didn't want to get married. The only thing she wanted was to go to Australia . "Glad? How can I be glad to hear that?"
"After years of friendship, finally me and your Sharma uncle will become relative" observing the shocked look his daughter was shooting at him,Mr Bushan added "Yes the proposal is from mayank"
"Mayank?!!!" her frown were transforming into wrinkles now
"He is a great kid, I always wanted you to marry him but I didn't know what you thought about him" he told "and when your sister told me that you liked mayank,I was on cloud nine."
"I don't like mayank!" nupur suddenly screamed What the hell is wrong with mayank! Oh,it must be one of his stupid prank!
"Papa I know you're kidding, It's written all over your face! Next time try something better!" .She was relaxed now. She wasn't a fool: mayank and wanting to marry her? No way! He had far better ladies in his life.
"I am serious" said her father. Confusion sprayed all over his visage.
"Yeah, he is serious" confirmed gungan with a similar confusion.
"Gungan stop it. It's not funny! You know I don't want to get married anyway"
"Nupur, what are you saying?" Mr bushan was not quite following his daughter reaction. She was supposed to be happy isn't it? She liked mayank and he also asked her hand in marriage then why was she acting as if she was the least interested in this union. Maybe she is shy in front of me
"Papa I think there has been a confusion. Neither do I like mayank in this way and nor I want to marry him"
"Then why are you two always together, everyone can see its love"
"Then everyone must be blind"
"Di,you told me that he is the best person in your life"
"Yes he is, but as a friend! He understands me well that why I like him. There is no love whatsoever"
"Then maybe mayank has feeling for you"
"No he hasn't! In fact he has a '" she stopped before saying something she wasn't supposed to say. Mayank has a girlfriend, I thought he was serious about this one; God knows what he is playing at"
"I am sorry but I think uncle is forcing him into this" she hesitantly said
"I spoke to mayank, he was far from sounding disturbed" clarified her father
"Please Papa ,I don't know why mayank is doing this but I don't want to marry him,in fact I don't want to marry anyone, I just want to go Austr-"
"Nupur you still think about going there! Didn't I tell you clearly that I would never accept that"
"You know I got a job offer in the best place ever, please let me go there" tears were now I am an adult now, I have the right to go wherever I want, if I wanted I would have been gone the day I received the offer!Argh why do I have to care so much about my dad?!
"No nupur!" he got angry. "And stop deviating the topic of discussion. I want to know you're answer about mayank's proposal in a week time" he started to serve food in his plate." Let's eat now"
"Papa I don't need time for this, my answer is no! But please let me accept this job offer, let me follow my dream, I want to go Australia!" she was on the verge of crying.
"Nupur!" his anger echoed in the hall. "When I say no it's no!"
The sound of her father's anger made nupur cry in next to no time. She pushed her plate and ran upstairs to her room.
She wasn't scared to be forced into a marriage. Her father was not of the type, he was a very open-minded widow father and he was very caring towards his two daughters. However he had some strictness too. He never allowed his daughter to be fully independent. He was way too protective to let them lead their live alone. Sending them to another country was out of the question.
