Mumbai: After 14 long years Sony Entertainment Television had rolled out an ambitious revamp plan on May 14th as they announced airing of seven new shows.
Fiction shows having a fairly good budget like Chittor Ki Rani Padmini, Palampur Express, Bhaskar Bharti, Ladies Special and non-fiction content like Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega and 10 Ka Dum and Dekh India Dekh -- all of them went on air from May 25.
However, within seven months of revamp, the channel's ambitious and hyped plan has gone bust with all the non-fiction shows going off air due to poor TRPs.
While Chittor Ki Rani Padmini went off air on August 13 and Palampur Express in the last week of October, After Hrs has learnt that the remaining two Bhaskar Bharti and Ladies Special will be hacked off on December 17 and December 10 respectively.
Though the channel is seeing its TRPs rise (currently at 188) but it is not as much as they would have liked to have to reach into the top three general Hindi entertainment channel bracket which is a three-way neck-and-neck battle between Colors, Zee and Star Plus.
"The channel has been number four for ages now and the head-honchos are not happy about it. They tried with the revamp and though the TRPs increased, it was not impressive to threaten the top three. They have decided to hack the shows that aren't doing well and induce fresh programming. They want instant results and shows that would make their TRPs zoom. Their tie-up with Yash Raj Films is such an initiative," says an industry insider.
"The shows were not doing well at all and there's no denying that but it's not the only reason to take them off and bring in new content. The shows are not being prematurely yanked off and it is being made sure that the stories meet their logical end. We are thriving to be the best and for that we are going to bring new programmes," says Danish Khan of Sony.
SET is seeing its shows like Aahat - All New Series, Comedy Circus 3 and CID do well but it is the Yash Raj shows that they are banking upon heavily. YRF is producing exclusive fiction and non-fiction content for the channel which will come on air from January 1, 2010.
