Review this movie

Blame it on the director, but they're mostly missing in action: Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif and Suniel Shetty. And it's hard to fathom why! Why in moviedom's name would a filmmaker sign the three most thoroughbreds of comedy and waste them away with a vanishing act? Haven't the threesome -- Akshay, Suniel and Paresh -- passed the litmus test at the box office and given contemporary cinema some of its best comedies in the Hera Pheri sequels? So why would anyone want to brush aside their crackling chemistry for a load of chaos created by a bunch of side characters who dominate the entire second half of the film? More importantly, why would a director lock his lead player, Akshay Kumar, in a cupboard, for reels and reels of the film, specially when he has been responsible for most of the laughs in the first half?

Hara-kiri, did we say! Or is it simply a case of bad judgement. Whatever be the case, De Dana Dan is a film that begins soundly and then slips into cuckoo land, only because the primary characters and their story is side-tracked for a compendium of tertiary tales. And these too, are so confusing, you keep losing the plot and the character count even though you desperately try and keep pace with the mayhem in this marriage that mostly transpires in a hotel in Singapore.

The story begins merrily enough with the sorry tale two friends, Akshay and Suniel, who can't marry their girl friends (Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy) because they have no money. Akshay spends his days and nights in miserable serfdom, trying to pay back his education loan to evil Archana Puran Singh, by pitching in as her do-it-all bai, while Suniel is a down and out delivery boy. After much ado -- and madness -- the duo hatch a kidnapping plot to earn that extra buck that would make them eligible for shaadi and grihasti. Predictably, the plot boomerangs and anything that can go wrong does begin to go wrong. Nothing wrong with that. Except that the girls' fathers get into the picture and the story completely derails with an odd assortment of characters squabbling for their place under the sun. Try guessing why Tinu Anand is gunning for Paresh Rawal who is gunning for Manoj Joshi who is gunning for Vikram Gokhale who is gunning for Neha Dhupia who is gunning for Shakti Kapoor who is gunning for Rajpal Yadav who is gunning for Johnny Lever who is being gunned down by Archana Puran Singh....Gotcha, didn't we!

Too many characters in the second half, too long drawn a climax (and completely over the top too), too little of Akshay and Katrina, the hit jodi of many a blockbuster: De Dana Dan delivers in bits and pieces alone. The humour is mostly slapstick and the plot wafer thin. Most of the laughs are provided by Akshay's Sad Sack butler act coupled with some rib tickling hysteria by Paresh Rawal. The girls, Katrina and Sameera, mostly look lost and woe begone. Also disappointing is Pritam's audio track, coming after a spate of successes this year.
No, this one's not quite the end-of-the-year laugh riot.

A word about:

Performances: Akshay leads the laugh riot from the front. But he's suddenly pushed to the back, much to the detriment of the film. Sadly, Katrina too looks completely out of sorts for most of the film. Just one question: Did someone else dub for her? Amongst the others, it's Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever and Suneil Shetty who manage to hold your attention; the rest are too loud, specially Manoj Joshi.

Dialogue: Mostly silly, hardly funny.

Story: Priyadarshan's plot is too loose, too long, too scattered to hold your attention. Most of the comedy is slapstick and stems from situational goof-ups.

Music: Pritam's music isn't inspired this time. None of the songs have shelf life. The only one which mildly moves you is Paisa, the Katrina-Akshay duet belted by a Punjabi pop band.

Choreography: Unimpressive dance moves by Ganesh Acharya.

Styling: The fashion aesthete is forgettable too. The girls look ordinary in their dresses and the guys sport the boy-next-door look.

Leave your brains behind for De Dana Dan
Movie
De Dana Dan
Director
Priyadarshan
Cast
Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Suniel Shetty, Sameera Reddy, Paresh Rawal, Archana Puran Singh

IndiaFM

Be forewarned. De Dana Dan is the most bizarre film from the maharaja of laughathons, Priyadarshan. Not even in your wildest dream would you think that he would shot almost an entire film in a hotel. Brings back memories of Blame It On The Bellboy.
But Priyadarshan needs to be credited for pulling it off. There are times when you laugh hysterically at the most outlandish jokes and situations. There are times when a raised eyebrow or a wide-open jaw makes you break into a guffaw.

Be cautioned. De Dana Dan is a loud film, with every character screaming at the top of his/her voice and with every character shouting, running, even swimming in the end. But else would you expect from a Priyadarshan film that has a title like De Dana Dan? The promos never promised path-breaking or thought-provoking cinema.

De Dana Dan makes no qualms of narrating a story you haven't heard before. Nitin [Akshay Kumar] is a butler, cook, driver, watchman and gardener to a wealthy female industrialist [Archana Puran Singh] in Singapore. Like any young man, Nitin too dreams of a better life. He desperately wants to become rich and marry the love of his life, Anjali [Katrina Kaif], who supports him financially.

Ram [Suniel Shetty], Nitin's best friend, also came to Singapore with the dream of striking it rich, but ended up a courier deliveryman. He falls for Manpreet [Sameera Reddy], but her high society parents will never approve of marriage - not unless Ram makes pots of money.

In the midst of all this is Harbans [Paresh Rawal], a shrewd businessman who's looking for ways to multiply his income and avoid his debtors. He decides the best way would be to marry his son [Chunky Pandey] to a girl whose parents can give him a large dowry. He is introduced to Manpreet's parents at a function and is impressed by their social status. He introduces himself as a well-established businessman and conspires to get Manpreet and his son married.

With several factors working against them, Nitin and Ram soon reach a dead end in their relationships. When both receive ultimatums from their girlfriends, they realise that only a life of vice can help them out of their misery. They come up with an audacious plan to kidnap someone important and demand a ransom.

The kidnapping goes awry and both hide at a local hotel while waiting for the ransom money. But misfortune is never far and the kidnapping spirals out of control.

Meanwhile, Manpreet's wedding reception is being held at the same hotel. Soon, they are joined by a motley set of characters including a Chinese Don [Asrani], a hired assassin [Johny Lever], an ACB police inspector [Sharat Saxena], a club dancer [Neha Dhupia], an ambassador [Vikram Gokhale], a young frustrated double-crossing wife [Aditi Govitrikar], a letch [Shakti Kapoor], a drunken waiter [Rajpal Yadav] and a dead body nobody wants to check into the hotel.

De Dana Dan is erratic and uneven - energetic at times, lethargic at places. Also, the culmination is very similar to the director's earlier works, with the entire cast running helter-skelter.

On the flip side, you miss Akshay's presence in the second hour. He disappears [gets locked in a cupboard] for at least 20 minutes and the focus, hence, shifts to the other characters. His fans will miss his presence. Besides, the film tends to get very lengthy towards the second half and overtly verbose, too.

Director Priyadarshan is synonymous with comedies and the ace storyteller promises laughter in abundance here. Handling so many characters, plus making a film on mistaken identities can be very tough, but the director gets it right.

Pritam's music is all right, while the R'n'B track, Paisa, is the pick of the lot. Salim-Sulaiman's background score is energetic. K Ahambaram's cinematography is all right.

The review would be incomplete if one ignored the dialogue writer's [Jay Master] contribution to the film. The lines are laced with wit and soaked in humour and bring the house down on several occasions.

De Dana Dan has so many characters that it gets difficult to pinpoint or single out any one actor. Akshay is at his best in a Priyadarshan film and De Dana Dan proves it. Suniel is natural to the core. Paresh is incredible; he pitches in a superb act. Katrina and Sameera don't have much to do. Amongst the plethora of actors, Johny Lever, Neha Dhupia, Manoj Joshi, Asrani, Vikram Gokhale and Archana Puran Singh deserve special mention.

On the whole, De Dana Danis targeted at the masses and it delivers laughter in abundance. Leave your brains behind to enjoy this madcap entertainer!

De Dana Dan: Movie Review
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/media/entertainment-/entertainment/De-Dana-Dan-Movie-Review-/articleshow/5274663.cms
Director:

Priyadarshan

Cast : Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Sunil Shetty

Rating: **

De Dana Dan almost marks a decade of the end of the sensitivity and sensibility of director Priyadarshan who switched on to commercially driven comedy capers post the success of Hera Pheri. De Dana Dan also almost marks a decade of the widespread acceptability that the slapstick genre has gained in scarcity of sane comedies.

Going by its casting, do not expect De Dana Dan to be a sequel, tribute or extension of the Hera Pheri series. Forget the threesome chemistry, there is hardly a single frame in the film where the trio of Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal share screen space. Except of course for the trademark Priyadarshan style chaotic climax where again their chemistry is diluted (literally through flooding fuss) as the entire cast joins them for more commotion.

Nitin Bankar (Akshay Kumar) is a driver under debt and Ram Mishra (Sunil Shetty) is a courier boy who hasn't delivered much in life. Though both have already assigned girlfriends (Katrina, Sameera) for them, the film still takes too long to come to point. Money is the need of the hour and so Priyadarshan does some hera pheri in the story – which means a kidnap. Just this time the duo kidnaps a canine and you wonder if the film is going to the dogs.

As you try to keep a count on the ever-increasing character artists, the entire cast checks-in a five star hotel. Soon the story takes the shape of the 1992 Hollywood flick 'Blame it on the Bellboy' which was remade in Bollywood just a year ago as 'One Two Three' (and also starred Sunil Shetty and Sameera Reddy). A comedy of errors ensues with characters doing Bhagam Bhag throughout the hotel.

Call it a 'wardrobe' disaster but Akshay Kumar is locked in one for practically an hour of the film's runtime. With a seemingly lost Sunil Shetty and a screeching loud Paresh Rawal, it's left up to the character artists to save the ship. But a flood is induced in the climax as the director seeks inspiration from another Hollywood flick 'The Towering Inferno' (1974) with each character going down the drain.

As the name suggests, De Dana Dan is a quickie flick which is hastily written, rapidly filmed, has swift storytelling and speeding characters giving you no time to breathe, gasp, feel, absorb react or relate. The film takes time to kick-off and nothing much happens in the first half. The second half gains momentum with cross-connections of characters inside the hotel. The more you attempt to keep a track of the individual tracks, the more it confuses you. The less you try to join the links, the more it binds you.

De Dana Dan Movie Review

De Dana Dan - De Dana Dan – Silly script flimsily made
IndiaGlitz [Friday, November 27, 2009]

Priyadarshan can barely spell flicks patently based on couple of things – either a raw offbeat drama or silliest comedies. Exactly, the auteur goes shilly-shallied over 'De Dana Dan' and there's nothing special you can look out for.

Indeed, it's really appalling to witness the biggies – Akki, Sunil, Katrina, Paresh delineated with flimsy roles. Being candid to oneself is all about avoiding this film and opt for something else.

And of course, if you're genuinely planning to kill your time by watching this flick, we're sorry – the film doesn't meddle around on with such aspects. How long Priyan will engage himself churning out such irksome flicks? Perhaps, you'll walk out of theatres with such questions arisen.

Well for Akshay Kumar, the actor really has a bad year with all his film failing to be brimmed with Midas-touch. And indeed, his mantra of pair-up with Katrina Kaif doesn't work out this time.

Nitin Bankar (Akshay Kumar) is a personal butler, cook, driver, watchman, gardener to a wealthy female industrialist (Archana Puran Singh) in Singapore. Like any young man, Nitin too, dreams of a better life, but misfortune is his constant companion and his reality is his job under Archana. He desperately wants to become rich and marry the love of his life, Anjali Kakkad (Katrina Kaif), who supports him financially.

Ram Mishra (Suneil Shetty), Nitin's best friend also came to Singapore with the dream of striking it rich, but ended up a courier delivery man. He falls for Manpreet Oberoi (Sameera Reddy), but her high society parents will never approve of marriage, not unless Ram has lots and lots of money.

In the midst of all this, is Harbans Chadda (Paresh Rawal), a shrewd businessman, is looking for ways to multiply his income and avoid his debtors. He decides the best way would be to marry his son off to a girl whose parents can give him a large dowry. He is introduced to Manpreet's parents at a Diwali function and is impressed by their social status. He introduces himself as a well-established businessman, impresses them and they decide to get Manpreet and Harbans' son (Chunky Pandey) married.

What unfolds next is series of comedic bizarre regrettably spoiled with establishment of more characters.

Unfortunately, none of the actors get a proper footage and much specifically in the latter part, every actors are found disembodied to their roles. Akshay Kumar gears on with his prototyped performance much like Hera Pheri series and fails terribly to impress us. Sparring not more than 3 sequences, the actor has nothing to showcase. Ditto to Sunil Shetty: the actor stumbles down half the way in latter part with lots of actors being introduced in second half. Its over-the-top performance by Paresh Rawal and he strives to work back the magic with Akki-Sunil combo. Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy have no prominence and maybe their glam-factors engrains to certain extent.

The silly dialogues, mediocre slapstick comedy tracks and ludicrous aspects will send you annoyed. Technically, the film lacks finesses. None of the songs except Paisa are worthy heeding to… Cinematography is okay.

On the whole, 'De Dana Dan' isn't actually a comedy entertainer. Rather, it can be entitled as a below average slapstick show that has nothing substantial over script, screenplay or dialogues.

Verdict: Falls short of expectations

Movie Review: DE DANA DAN is chaotic in second half [27 Nov 2009]
STARRING

Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Katrina Kaif, Paresh Rawal, Neha Dhupia, Sameera Reddy, Johny Lever, Archana Puran Singh, Manoj Joshi, Tinu Anand, Chunkey Pandey, Asrani, Vikram Gokhale, Rajpal Yadav, Aditi Govitrikar, Supriya Karnik and others.

DIRECTION

Priyadarshan

STORY

The plot revolves around the characters of two friends—Nitin Bankar(Akshay Kumar) and Ram Mishra(Suniel Shetty), who have gone to Singapore in search of a fortune. However, fortunes do not favor them and Nitin Bankar becomes a cook- cum- gardener to a wealthy industrialist Archana Puran Singh.

Nitin is in love with Anjali, the daughter of rich parents and is prepared to go to any length to marry her. Anjali even gives financial support to Nitin, and he wants to come out of all this by becoming a rich person.

On the other hand, Ram Mishra, who had also come with Nitin to change his misfortune into a big fortune, ends up as a courier man with a company. However, he falls for Manpreet Oberoi (Sameera Reddy), who belongs to very rich family.

Nitin Bankar is in love with ravishing Anjali Kakkad (Katrina Kaif) but does not have resources to propose her marriage. The parents of both girls- Anjali and Manpreet—are rich people and naturally want to marry off their daughters to suitably rich bridegrooms.

However, Nitin and Ram are deeply in love with Anjali and Manpreet and decide to do something to prevent the girls' parents taking any decision about their marriage. They plan to kidnap someone rich and extort money, so that they can show themselves to be rich and competent enough for their lovely ladies.

Then there is a bankrupt businessman Harbans Chadda (Paresh Rawal), who wants some moneybag to give his daughter to his good-for-nothing son Chunky Pandey. The opportunity comes knocking when Harbans meets Manpreet's rich parents at a Diwali function. Harbans cons them into believing that he was a businessman of repute and it would be beneficial for both parties to have the relationship.
In the meantime, the kidnapping planned by Nitin and Ram gets out of control and they flee the scene and take shelter in a hotel, where the reception of Manpreet is being held. Soon, they are joined by a hired assassin, an ACB police officer, a drunken waiter and some others.

What happens to Ram and Nitin's love life afterwards is revealed in the later parts of the flick.

PERFORMANCE

Akshay Kumar, who plays the character of Nitin in the film, is again successful at tickling the funny bone of the audiences, especially so while doing the sad butler act in Archana Puran Sinng's home. However, the sad part of the story is that Akshay Kumar, who could have lifted the film several notches from the ordinary, has been sidelined in the second half.

In fact, Akshay Kumar makes appearances in bits and parts in the second half and this goes totally against the flick. Akshay, who had proved his comic timing again and again in such movies like 'Hera Pheri', 'Singh is Kinng' etc gets sidelined in the second half, and the movie gets lost and fails to impress the viewer.

In fact, Akshay Kumar's absence from the story in the second half, when he has been confined to a cupboard, works against the flick. It was only Akshay Kumar who could have provided the required upward kick to the flick with Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal(as they had proved in Priyadarshan's earlier flicks 'Hera Pheri' etc)

Katrina Kaif, the sizzling hot babe of bollywood who plays the character of Anjali Kakkad(love interest of Akshay Kumar), fails to live up to her reputation on the celluloid. In fact, the usually gorgeous looking babe seemed out of sort in the flick, as if not knowing what to do.

Those who wanted to see the continuation of Katrina Kaif's superb comic timing of 'Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani' will be disappointed with her performance in 'De Dana Dan'. The firang babe looks lost in the melee of characters that invade the screen in the second half of the flick.

Suniel Shetty, who plays the part of Akshay Kumar's friend Ram Mishra, enacts his character well. His chemistry with Akshay and Paresh is good but fails to uplift the flick from its mediocrity in the second half.

Similarly, Paresh Rawal, the veteran actor of several successful comedies, who plays the character of a shrewd businessman Harbans, has come out with a winning performance. His con businessman act reminds one of Anupam Kher's similar act in Aamir Khan-Madhuri Dixit starrer 'Dil'.

Others like Sameera Reddy, Neha Dhupia enact their part well; however the styling and dresses seem to have bogged down these gorgeous ladies. Rajpal Yadav, Johny Lever, Manoj Joshi and all others who crowed the second half of the flick just pass the muster.

The direction of Priyadarshan seems to have gone all wrong this time. Perhaps the ace director had been bogged down by a wafer thin plot line of the flick. What seems inexplicable to the viewer is the fact that why would a director like Priyadarshan, who had earlier worked with Akshay Kumar, would chop his presence in the second half of the flick.

In fact, Priyadarshan's judgment seems to have all gone wrong, especially in the matter of giving more footage to ensemble cast rather than Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal. Recall that hotel scene where the chaos is created by these sidekicks by running behind each other without any great purpose or designs. For instance, Tinu Anand is running behind Paresh, Paresh is behind Manoj Joshi and Manoj gunning for Vikram Gokhale etc.

The music rendered by Pritam fails to inspire or impress viewers. The viewer expected tuneful music from Pritam but disappoints completely. The only saving grace is Akshay Kumar-Katrina Kaif 'Paisa' track, which has been done by a local Punjabi band. Ganesh Acharya's choreography, too, fails to impress.

STARDUST VERDICT

Despite of presence of the hit pair of Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, the flick fails to impress in its totality due to a chaotic second half. The multitude of characters in the second half and the unusually long climax only adds to the woes of viewers. An average fare at the box office.
