Fashion police: Rani Mukerji gets a rap and some claps

We love actresses who take risks - be it with their films or their clothes. But you have to have an 'eye' for risks. Rani Mukerji doesn't have it - most of the time.

On screen, she's managed to pull off a decent wardrobe. (With the exception of Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic - where her ankle-brushing skirt, maroon vest, dowdy brown jacket and hair band would have suited a scullery maid better than a fairy.) But when she's tried to dress herself off screen, she's inevitably got it wrong.

So when she surfaced in the second half of 2009 - after months of shunning the media - to promote her latest flick Dil Bole Hadippa!, we kept our eyes skinned. And here's our take of Rani's fashion hits and misses.

Rani's clearly taken some feedback from well-wishers. Maybe a few stylists, too. And she's discovered what we've always known - she looks fabulous in a sari.

At a Durga Puja organised at Santacruz, she turned up in a fiery red sari with applique-like work all over it. She kept her accessories simple - gold bangles interspersed with red and green, and beautiful gold hoops. Her makeup was spot on, too - smoky eyes complimented by nude lips.

She also went the sari way when she attended a dance performance by Hema Malini. Rani draped herself in a black and white sari with a dramatic black, red and silver border. The contrasting blouse - gold work accentuated by the same border - had sleeves a tad too long for our liking, but she carried it off well.

In the accessories department, we liked how she played up the ethnic look with huge silver hoops, thick silver bangles, a lovely flower-shaped ring and, of course, the red bindi.

Yet another function, yet another sari! Rani proved she's one for following good advice! We like! However, we didn't like the sari she chose when she attended a Dussera event in Santacruz. Despite the pink and green border, and everything shot through with sequins, we thought it looked blah. But we will give her points for the lovely blouse - we simply love the green halter neck. We also loved the pearl-encrusted hoops. She seems to have stocked up on every variation out in the market. But we do wish she had tried something different with her hair. Loose tresses can be boring if worn the same way, event after event.

Our verdict: Dump the sari, keep the blouse

A change from saris. Unfortunately, not all change is for the good. At first glance, Rani looked good. But then we looked again. Sorry! The blue-grey gown she sported at an event to promote Dil Bole Hadippa! was ghastly. Not only was the geometric print a disaster, but it also cut her figure into symmetrically horizontal lines. Rani looked like someone had constructed her - piece by piece - out of printed building blocks. And silver beads on an already busy background - a wasted effort.

Our verdict: Leave playing with building blocks to Lego fans

Can we say we like Rani in parts? The grey top with the funky bunched sleeves - would look great with jeans. The layered black skirt - would look awesome with a jewel-toned silk blouse. But together? They just looked uninspired and sad. And why of why would anybody attending an event at Radio Mirchi want to look like a cross between a school girl and a secretary. The only thing the least bit 'mirchi' about Rani was the pink nail colour she had painted her toes with. Sigh!

Our verdict: Don't be scared of a healthy dose of colour

When Rani attended yet another Durga Puja event (one which her cousin Kajol and niece Nysa also attended), she went back to her favourite standby, the sari. The white cotton sari with the contrasting border and blouse looked simple and beautiful. We especially loved the delicate pattern of embroidered flowers that played peek-a-boo. Heavy gold jewellery - couldn't take our eyes off the gorgeous necklace - her trademark smoky eyes, and the big red bindi completed the coolly elegant look.

Our verdict: That's true star quality

I like the last Sari, with the large Bindi and the chunky jewelry. I also like the grey and black skirt.

Personally, I like Rani in very ethnic wear. NOt the manish minholtra chiffon sari. That's overdone and boring. Sure she looks pretty in any Sari.

But, something about the true ethnic colors and prints really suit her.
I've always said this but with western wear, the simple the better for her. Too much pattern and jazz doesn't work with petite women.
Simple long lines with a hint of color from a scarf or jewelry is better. I don't know..... she should look at Nichole riche's style of dressing and get ideas. She is a great dresser when it comes to petite women and looks gorgeous.

Are they kidding? Who is the fashion police?
The second to last pic is the "in" style nowadays. Again, are they kidding? She looks amazing.

Ok, I think the fashion police are a little too harsh here. I like most of her pics. She definitely looks good in saris, except for the picture with Hema Malini. Those colors don't suit her, plus I think she looks better in saris that are simple. Also those western outfits are not bad either. Yes, she did wear some revealing western outfits recently, which were unflattering, but I think those outfits in the pictures are pretty decent. She especially looks cute in the gray/black outfit. 😊

Rani looks stunning ...She carries herself very well with whatever she wears ....😊
I am curious though...were there other actresses mentioned or it was only Rani who was the punching bag for this "fashion" police who herself/himself needs to learn a thing or 2 about fashion....😉
