i was wondering what sort of great doctor she is? she charges Rs. 800 per session and yet she has a packed schedule for the whole month. from when could most indians afford such high fees? and are there so many autistic people in india/mumbai that she has such large number of patients?

according to research the ratio is ,out of 150 one kids born as autistic, so u can calculate ...i beleive in mumbai itself it shuld b more then 10or 15 thousand...

yep...70% of them would belong to poor families going by the percentage of poor in india. can these ppl afford such costly sessions? now among the rest 30% also most ppl wud be middle class and such treatment wud be out of their reach too. the price itself wud keep most patients away who might prefer to go to a doc who charges less.

That's actually not a doctor but a speech therapist. They are known to charge a fat sum of money. It's not necessarily that just the autistic go to them for remedy. People with speech defects like stammering, lisping, the deaf and those with physiological mouth disorders all seek their advice.

If you hear at the end of each epi, the parents tell you that treatment for children with special needs is expensive and that is world over.

ah.ha speech therapist...that makes sense. if her patients were restricted to only autistic ppl then i cant believe she would be so busy.

well i never expected such a high ratio on this issue..well i live in Sri Lanka n we hardly have any autistic children here compared to that..but my heart goes out 2 all those born in poor families 4 whom help is completely out f their reach..
i wonder how these children n thr families cope with life..:(

Speech therapy is horribly expensive. My son is on a waiting list for therapy which is covered by our medical insurance, and the wait is a year long. If we go to a private therapist, we are looking at about US$300 per week.

Think Mahi.......how heartbreaking and difficult it is for the average person here to make ends meet in order to get treatment for their kid. There is no insurance company which will cover any speech therapy.
