If you haven't already tried it, try "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova. It blurs the line between the folklore and history of Vlad Tepes. The pacing is slow in some parts so that might make it a tedious read but if you can get past those, it's incredibly rewarding because the story is so intriguing.
Aztec by Gary Jennings -- Fan-freaking-tastic. Read up something about the Aztecs before you open this and I can assure you that you won't be bored by this. It's quite long 1000+ pages as I recall and the first 80-90ish pages aren't that intriguing but as soon as you delve into the more hardcore-cultural setting, you'll love it. I think the main allure of this book is the main character Mixtli who is so humanized. Because of my interest in anthropology, I've learned that books should respect different cultures and this one does. It never demeans the rituals of the Aztecs and presents them in a neutral manner. The key negative point is most of the key female characters are cut from the same cloth and bring in little to the plot as a whole. And um.. there are some events that are morally questionable for people of today like incest and pedophilia and some of these scenes are explicit because the Aztecs were very liberal with their sexuality. That said, there's more to the book than just this.
