Ayan Mukherjee is all set for a lot of excitement and some jitters as his directorial debut Wake Up Sid nears its release on October 2.
But unlike many first timers, the director seems pretty confident about his venture that has been produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. And though Ayan would love to talk at length about his film, all the running around has left him with little time to do so. The first-time director is busy running around trying to get things in order "to get the movie out in time". Well, Wake Up Sid is about Siddharth Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor), an unmotivated guy who loves having fun, and whose life undergoes a series of changes after taking his final year college exams. The movie also stars the super-talented Konkona SenSharma. So was it difficult for a newbie to direct an experienced actress? "Konkona is a delight to work with. People think of her as this serious actress, but she's easy to work with. She doesn't take herself or her work too seriously. In fact, in the beginning I used to think that I have to make some comment after every shot and I would do that," he laughs.
And, of course, he's all praise for his Sid — Ranbir Kapoor. "I think one of the best things that I am taking away from this movie is my equation with Ranbir Kapoor. He's not just a good actor, but also a great person to be around," says Ayan.
The character Sid came a bit from within Ayan and a bit from what he has observed around. The young director says, "I absolutely identify with Sid. That feeling of not having a goal, wanting to have a great time... It's a characteristic that most youngsters would identify with. The inspiration for the character has come from what I saw around me and a bit from within."
The otherwise cool director says that the only thing that's upset him a bit is the fact that people have been calling the Ranbir-Konkona jodi an unconventional pair. "It's about people and about relationships. Any two people who get along with each other can be friends," he points out. The director has other reasons to be worried about. "There are two sides to everything. Firstly, you are responsible for every little thing. Everything from putting together a shot to picking a dress is a big decision. But on the other hand, there's a certain innocence that you have as a first-time director," he says.
Awaiting the release of the movie can be a daunting task, but Ayan has had little time to breathe. "I am busy slogging out right now trying to put everything together. But yes, I am excited and nervous about the release," he admits.
