Taran Adarsh's.

Samir Karnik completes his trilogy. NANHE JAISALMER was about dreams, HEROES was about pride and VAADA RAHA is about hope. The commonality in all three films, besides Bobby Deol and child star Dwij Yadav, is the emotional quotient.

VAADA RAHA, inspired by a Russian fable, is about the bond between two patients - a grown up man and a kid, respectively. An interesting thought, nonetheless. But there's a hitch. The writing isn't too convincing and what actually dilutes the effort is that it tends to stagnate at places. More on that later!

What does stand tall in VAADA RAHA is Bobby Deol's super performance. This is his most accomplished work to date!

Duke's [Bobby Deol] life can be called gratifying. Professionally, he is a successful doctor, personally an ardent lover and parent to a doting dog. Duke loves Nalini [Kangna Ranaut] and they plan to marry soon.

A sudden turn of fate ends Duke's perfect world. He is paralyzed neck down, after an accident. Nalini leaves him. He becomes bitter and angry at himself. Duke hates his conditions so much that he wishes he had died instead of living in a condition which is worse. He loses hope.

Roshan [Dwij Yadav], a young boy, enters his life. Duke hates Roshan in the first few meetings, but Roshan wins over his heart. Roshan boosts his morale and motivates him. In time, Duke gains sensation first in his hands and then in his legs. One fine day, the doctor tries to make him walk with the help of crutches. But a shock awaits him.

Samir Karnik's forte has been emotions and VAADA RAHA displays his prowess yet again, but the writing bogs him down. For instance, Kangna walks out of Bobby - in fact deserts him - soon after he meets with an accident. Forget standing by him, she decides against visiting him in the hospital, which appears very, very strange. That seems hard to believe!

Another weird aspect is the culmination to the story, when Bobby is back on his toes and he's shown married to Kangna. Ideally, Bobby should've dumped Kangna for discarding him when he needed her the most.

Also, Dwij gives hope to Bobby all through, but the lines/dialogues he's asked to deliver look weird when a kid mouths them. For, Dwij talks like a wise old man who has seen the world.

Despite the faulty script, Samir Karnik's handling of a few sequences is commendable. Binod Pradhan's cinematography is top notch. Music is a letdown.

VAADA RAHA belongs to Bobby Deol. He's excellent. Kangna Ranaut is wasted. Dwij does very well. Mohnish Bahl is alright. Sharat Saxena and Vivek Shauq are wasted. Prateeksha Lonkar acts well.

On the whole, VAADA RAHA stands on a faulty script. Besides, the lack of hype will make the effort go unnoticed.

Vaada raha Review

September 11th, 2009

Movie Review: Vaada raha; Star cast: Bobby Deol, Kangana Ranaut, Mohnish Behl, Dwij Yadav and Sharat Saxena; Director: Samir Karnik; Rating: 2 out of 5 - Fails to Keep its Promise!

Vaada raha…I promise is a beautiful story, but impact less. Courtesy poor direction and screenplay. Despite a fairly powerful star-cast this film lacks what we call commercialism in tinsel town. Poor promotions have already done damage to the film. To top it all, the film critics won't find a reason to coax the cine-goers to go and watch this film.

Heart-touching script loses it essence as one gets to the middle of the film, the screenplay bores you to death till the end and you discover nothing unique. Duke Chawla (Bobby Deol) is a successful doctor who is on the verge of marrying the love of his life Nalini (Kangana Ranaut). But destiny has something else in store for him. He meets an accident and eventually is paralyzed from neck downwards. He is devastated as his ladylove too betrays him the way life does.

Soon in his aimless and hopeless life enters a boy Roshan (Dwij Yadav), who is full of life and inspires him to not lose hope. And what happens next is somehow interesting to watch in terms of story, but direction and screenplay goes haywire where Vaada Raha loses all the points.

Kangana Ranaut does not get much scope. Bobby Deol is perfect for his part and shares an amazing screen rapport with Dwij Yadav.

Overall, Vaada Raha I promise won't impress everyone, but is a mediocre attempt by the filmmakers. Star value might give the cine-goer to watch the film, but they certainly won't be much pleased at the end of the day.

Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Bobby Deol
Director: Samir Karnik
Producer: Samir Karnik/Sunil A Lulla

Bobby Deol is a genius cancer specialist named Duke Chawla. That itself should give you some idea what Vada Raha has in store for you. I'm not sure where Duke lives-the action cuts from Grecian ruins to snazzy yachts in dazzling blue seas to a Sardar neighbour.

But Duke is successful, in love and seriously happy. Of course it can't last. One rainy night, Duke has an accident and ends up in a hospital bed with neck-down paralysis. His love interest, played by Kangana Ranaut, promptly dumps him and Duke becomes a bitter man, who in one unintentionally hilarious scene, tries to commit suicide by chewing on his IV tubes.

A precocious child, played by Dwij Yadav, brings the light back into Duke's life by teaching him the importance of hope and love. In case you still haven't got the point, the kid is called Roshan.

The film, which is inspired by a Russian fable, could have been a reasonably moving hospital drama. But director Sameer Karnik, who also co-wrote the screenplay and dialogue, creates a dim-witted, staggeringly tedious soap opera. Duke's supine condition is an endurance test, not just for him but also for us.

To begin with, the medical situations in Vada Raha are comically disconnected from reality. At one point, Duke, still paralysed, supervises a heart operation from his hospital bed, because there are no heart surgeons available at the hospital. He gives instructions like: position the valve, make the incision. And if that isn't enough--Duke then begins to do research on bone marrow cancer, again from the bed.

He stares hard at the computer screens and says: Eureka I've done it. Yes, Duke has found the cure for cancer. The actors can't shore up the story much. I think Kangana decided to make up for the brevity of her role by applying as much eye make-up as is humanely possible. Bobby works hard to be convincing but the outlandish plot outdoes him.

The role also requires him to weep copiously on screen. Some men can pull off full-frontal crying but Bobby isn't one of them. Vada Raha has little to offer. I'm going with two stars.

You thought that because you were an optimist. I will be honest and say I haven't seen his earlier work. But was Heroes any good? He excels at showing emotions, but his script lets him down. Talk about discordant thoughts there, TA. Maybe, I might just see it if TA trashed it, but if this film is all about Bobby and no scope for Kangana, I doubt I could stomach the whole movie, especially considering how sappy it sounds.

I guess I like to have hope too. 😆 Heroes was not that good.. the emotional scenes were good; the rest was blah. Nanhe Jaisalmer was nice. I liked it. I think I still might watch for Kangana.

I was hoping for a good review and since Bobby's performance was appreciated, I still will watch the film.

I prefer to watch for myself and then make a judgment.
