Urmila Matondkar – Sexy, Sensual, Oomphy
The entire nation went crazy after her post Rangeela. Her name was rewritten as mar tod kar. She had broken everyone with one stroke of her oomph. Her small frame could just raise sighs with raw sensuality. The actress had grown up. The child-woman was born. Her sex symbol image was unchallenged for a long time.
It was not only her oomphy image; she gave intense performances in Kaun (1999), Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya (2001), Bhoot (2003) and Ek Hasina Thi (2004). She was a complete actress. This was also her best phase.
And then began her parallel/art cinema phase with Tehzeeb (2003), Pinjar (2003), Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara (2005) and Bas Ek Pal (2006). These movies heralded the end of her active career as commercial movies' actress. These movies added to her repertoire but we lost her.
She did do floor-breaking item numbers Chamma Chamma in China Gate (1998), Aaiye Aajaiye in Lajja (2001) and Mahbooba Mahbooba in Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag (2007). She even lent her voice to Asha Bhonsle's album in 2007.
Urmila Matondkar (35) was no longer seen in commercial cinema. Sadly, there wasa no demand as newer and younger heroines arrived on the scene and did one better oomphy act than her. The competition had truly become hot. If Urmila gave competition to Shridevi and Madhuri Dixit, now Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif effortlessly took over.
Her slide has been gradual and steady. She made a special appearance in Om Shanti Om (2007) and acted in flop Speed (2007). And in the flops Karzzzz and EMI (2008) her career was as good as over. But her oomph was intact.
In 2009 she will be seen in an animated movie Ab Dilli Door Nahin, Non Stop Fun and Gulel. Can these movies revive her career and we can have the actress back with us spreading what she is known best for – oomph. She has many more years of life as an actress left. Helen is still remembered. Urmila cannot fade away. Not so soon.
Versatility is her second name. An excellent dancer, she is a complete actress, who has hardly ever disappointed. Be it in negative roles or in regular spunky ones, she had excelled in them.
Let's hope she bounces back. She will, considering her strong will and staying power. Only if good directors and die-hard fans root for her, the sky will be the limit for her. Artists like her can never fade away. Their memories will always linger.
It's time she refreshened our memories and presented a live act that will take away our breath as usual. That won't be difficult for her. Maaro, Todo but Karo, Urmila.
