| | | | | NOW: Phir bhi zinda hoon main: Sanjay Dutt | THEN: Bole toh, tab bhi main khush tha: Sanjay Dutt | It's party time for the two inseparable friends of Bollywood, Sanjay Dutt and Sanjay Gupta. Zinda is being called the first hit of 2006, and the pair are thrilled with the response and the film has garnered so far.
Gupta is also relieved. "Though I knew in my heart of hearts, that Zinda will do the trick for me, it's a different feeling altogether when it actually happens. Sanju and John have equally contributed to the film, and I am very happy with the reviews that the film has got."
Speaking to hitList, Sanjay Dutt said, "Gupta has matured as a director. He has come of age. His work in Zinda is a clear reflection of how he has got the hang of being not only stylised in his approach, but how to tell a story and keep the audience at the edge of the seat."
Dutt says that he was quite sure that Zinda will do well. "I owe it to the team work put in by one and all who contributed in the making of this project," he says excitedly. Surprised by success
Gupta is very happy with the collections in especially Mumbai, Delhi, South and overseas. "I am really surprised with the reports coming in from Punjab and Rajasthan, where there was some skepticism that the single screen audience may not take it very well. I think people want something different and this time I delivered to their demand."
What about people who think that the film is gruesome? "Yes, Zinda is gruesome. But that has gone down well in broad perspective. Majority of the people understood that it was an unconventional film and it required to be gruesome. I couldn't sugar-coat this film."
Gupta has a pat on the back for John and Sanjay. "Sanju and John got along very well and did a lot of rehearsals till late night. The output is always proportional to the input put. So it's no surprise that the film has worked and is doing well" No gaana bajana
Trade pundits feel Zinda would have been better off if it had songs. "I disagree," Gupta stamps his foot. "I will never compromise on my instinct and the demand of the script." And will he compromise on making a film without Sanju baba? "I don't think so. My next film will have Sanju."
Just like Karan Johar cannot make a film without Shah Rukh Khan, Gupta cannot make a film without Sanjay Dutt? "That's right," he smiles.
And what is that next one going to be? "At the moment, the next one is a big holiday," the director roars with laughter. "After that, I will start working on it." |
