Celebrating and Saluting the Spirit of Independent India ,

"Where the mind is without fear

and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been
broken up into fragments by
narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from
the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches
its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason
has not lost its way into the dreary
desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is lead forward by thee
into ever-widening thought and action-
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father,
let my country awake."

"GEETANJALI" -Rabindranath Tagore

We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made.
-Albert Einstein

India - The land of Vedas, the remarkable works contain not only religious ideas for a perfect life, but also facts which science has proved true. Electricity, radium, electronics, airship, all were known to the seers who founded the Vedas.
- Wheeler Wilcox (American poet)

Freedom in the Mind ... Faith in the words ... Pride in our Souls ... Lets salute the Nation on Independence Day !!! Vandhe Matharam !

"India was the motherland of our race, and Sanskrit the mother of Europe's languages: she was the mother of our philosophy; mother, through the Arabs, of much of our mathematics; mother, through the Buddha, of the ideals embodied in Christianity; mother, through the village community, of self-government and democracy. Mother India is in many ways the mother of us all"....Will Durant, American historian

"India is, the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grand mother of tradition. our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only.. .Mark Twain, American author

Hum logon ko samajh sako to samjho dilbar jaani
Jitna bhi tum samjhoge utni hogi hairaani
Hum logon ko samajh sako to samjho dilbar jaani
Jitna bhi tum samjhoge utni hogi hairaani

Apni chhatri tumko dedein kabhi jo barse paani
Kabhi naye packet mein bechein tumko cheez puraani
Phir bhi dil hai hindustani
Phir bhi dil hai hindustani

Aankhon mein kuchh aansoo hain kuchh sapne hain
Aansoo aur sapne donon hi apne hain
Aankhon mein kuchh aansoo hain kuchh sapne hain
Aansoo aur sapne donon hi apne hain
Dil dukha hai lekin toota to nahin hai
Umeed ka daaman chooka to nahin hai
Phir bhi dil hai hindustani
Phir bhi dil hai hindustani

Happy Independence Day, India!

Jas, that was a nice song. I especially liked the line about "naye packet mein cheez purani"! Who wrote this song?

Dvisaptakoti bhujair dhrita-khara karavale
Abala kena ma eta bale

Ripudalavarinim Mataram!

Tumi vidya, tumi dharma,
Tumi hridi, tumi marma,
Tvam hi pranah sharire!

Bahute tumi ma shakti,
Hridaye tumi ma bhakti,
Tomarayipratima gari mandire mandire!

Tvam hi Durga dashapraharana dharini,

Shyamalam, saralam, susmitam, bhushitam,
Dharanim, bharanim, Mataram!

***************************
Mother, I bow to thee!
Rich with thy hurrying streams,
bright with orchard gleams,
Cool with thy winds of delight,
Dark fields waving Mother of might,
Mother free.
Glory of moonlight dreams,
Over thy branches and lordly streams,
Clad in thy blossoming trees,
Mother, giver of ease
Laughing low and sweet!
Mother I kiss thy feet,
Speaker sweet and low!
Mother, to thee I bow.

Who hath said thou art weak in thy lands
When the sword flesh out in the seventy million hands
And seventy million voices roar
Thy dreadful name from shore to shore?
With many strengths who art mighty and stored,
To thee I call Mother and Lord!
Though who savest, arise and save!
To her I cry who ever her foeman drove
Back from plain and Sea
And shook herself free.

Thou art wisdom, thou art law,
Thou art heart, our soul, our breath
Though art love divine, the awe
In our hearts that conquers death.
Thine the strength that nerves the arm,
Thine the beauty, thine the charm.
Every image made divine
In our temples is but thine.

Thou art Durga, Lady and Queen,
With her hands that strike and her
swords of sheen,
Thou art Lakshmi lotus-throned,
And the Muse a hundred-toned,
Pure and perfect without peer,
Mother lend thine ear,
Rich with thy hurrying streams,
Bright with thy orchard gleems,
Dark of hue O candid-fair

In thy soul, with jewelled hair
And thy glorious smile divine,
Lovilest of all earthly lands,
Showering wealth from well-stored hands!
Mother, mother mine!
Mother sweet, I bow to thee,
Mother great and free

Thanks for the words of the song, Vande Mataram, Meli, and the translation! I used to hear this song almost daily when we lived in Delhi once upon a time, but they played only the first verse.

Jas, I was reminded of the song "Chhodo kal ki baatein kal ki baat purani, naye taur se likhenge milkar nayi kahani hum hindustani ..." when I saw your song. The one I have mentioned used to be popular in my time.

Happy 62 India.
My India is not made of Sapne, but pure reality. And Shah Rukh, who made phir bhi dil hai hindustani is less of a patriot than made to be. In the ninties, he was battling the press that said he had underworld connections.
When I write about India in The Indian Economy, I can feel the pride, the patriotism, a pure sense of contribution towards India and only India. It will be very rare that your will find any other country's name mentioned there. Every day is independance day and a celebration at The Indian Economy.
We have a truly magnificent channel moderator, who's put us tamilians on the India map. There's a quality about her posts like none other and is a role model for me.
India is one. KIt''s biggest threat is not Pakistan, but the Maoists who have already consumed Nepal. It is The Empire of Cricket that rules the world. Much like only firangi coaches are acceptable, India is ruled by A firang, Sonia, who is India's finest daughter. She's more Indian than most Indians.
A happy independance day to all my IF brothers and sisters. Happy reading for the rest of the year.
