No, songs aren't necessary in a movie.
I mean look at hollywood...some movies have songs some don't.
But our hindi film industry is known for its uniqueness and one of the uniqueness is the fact that even though all our movies aren't musical's we still have songs in almost each and every movie of ours.
So, i would say that songs aren't necessary in movies but its part of our industry...how can we not have songs. ;)

P.S. Nice topic! :)

yea songs sometimes lead the story but look at black it didnn have no songs and there are many which dont
but its jus that by songs movies get a recognition and maybe and they add much more emotion to the story for example tujh mein rab dikhta hai i m sure SRK wudnn hv ever been able to express the depth of his love without this song or neither we wudve felt it
its jus that audience doesnt accpt movies without songs so its kinda mandatory now
and trust me they have a source of income if the movie doesntt do well sometimes songs cann

They aren't necessary, but they are quite an essential part of the formula of most Bollywood films. Personally, I think as long as songs are integral to the plot and help push the narrative further, then it is all good. But when songs are thrown in there, just to prolong the movie, I have no qualms fast forwarding when renting a movie if I feel like I don't have the time to sit though it. That is why I think the way Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra used his songs in RDB without any lipsynching was really nice, but those songs were so essential and were very intertwined with the plot. Sure, it is more than fine enough to just get by with a nice background score. I mean the music composed for the Harry Potter is imprinted in my mind because I have heard it so many because of its trademark sound thanks to John Williams, lol.
I guess if it is a good song someone will sit though it though I don't see why there has to be an item song persay to promote. Hopefully, someone would see the movie without that promoting the movie in question. Or so I would hope, lol. And good music doesn't necessarily mean a good film. Sangam seems to be the most eminent example in my mind when it comes to that. Though I have to say things have definitely gotten better, there is a less of an idea to just have songs for the sake of having songs, but producing quality. Having them is what makes our films unique, and I do like them more than I used to. That is for sure.:)

Anyone remember the movie "Pushpak" ?? let alone songs, it didn't even have any dialogues, yet it was so effective. Its one of my fav. movies 👏
the bottom line is if u have a strong script and a fabulous director, u don't even need dialogues in the movie and not even songs.. what say??

No, they're not necessary. I think back in the days some were completely pointless, yet at that time you would think it was a good source of enetertainment. I think movies do a lot better if they didn't have tracks, but they have become an essential part of bollywood movies, like dizzyonlemonade said.
But if you look at the past decade it was pretty much impossible to picture a bollywood movie without any songs and dancing or whatnot, but since movies like black & viruddh you begin to think oh that wasn't so bad.
Personally, I don't want them to completely abolish songs from movies because that'd be just boring and perhaps not enough to captivate the audience...but if they can just chill out with the dancing and stuff it'd be fine. I mean actors would have an easier time and they could actually FOCUS more on their acting skills.

These days there are item songs in movies, which sometimes help the movie move forward but most of the times it just wastes the time 😕 , and if u already have 7-8 songs then its a total waste. I feel there shouldn't be any songs unless the songs take the story forward.
