Two observations before I 'dissect' TEREE SANG...
One, it's often said that veterans find it extremely difficult to change with times, adapt to new-age cinema.

Two, it's often said that a capable director has the potential to unearth new talent and polish their skills.
The two observations hold true for Satish Kaushik, who's known for dramatic/masala entertainers and who changes gears so swiftly with TEREE SANG.

Now let's begin... First and foremost, TEREE SANG is not JUNO. The resemblance starts and ends with an adolescent getting pregnant. TEREE SANG is not KYA KEHNA either. TEREE SANG mirrors what's happening in society vividly. But, at the same time, it's not dark or disturbing, nor does it get preachy.

But there're minor issues. Certain portions make this real story look filmy and that robs the film of its freshness. It becomes another BOBBY and LOVE STORY at one point. More on that later!

Yet, all said and done, TEREE SANG is fresh and engrossing in most parts. Recommended!

Maahi [Sheena Shahabadi], the only child of the Puri family [Rajat Kapoor, Neena Gupta], is a bubbly 15-year-old Delhi girl. She belongs to a prosperous family and has the best of material comforts. Kabir [Ruslaan Mumtaz], a 17-year-old, has a middle class background [Satish Kaushik, Sushmita Mukherjee Bundela].

Maahi and Kabir become friends. On a camping trip on New Year's Eve, after getting a little tipsy, the young couple get intimate. Soon, Maahi gets pregnant. What follows is a journey of accepting one's mistakes and owning up to it.

Satish Kaushik steps into a new territory with TEREE SANG and throws a pleasant surprise at viewers. The entire first half is so real, so identifiable and the execution of the subject is so interesting that you get instantly drawn into Kabir and Maahi's worlds. The passionate kiss that they share, which leads to a sexual encounter, is also maturely depicted on screen by the director.

But it's the second hour that's problematic. It becomes yet another version of BOBBY and LOVE STORY, with the kids eloping and the warring parents thirsting for each other's blood. These portions don't appeal primarily because too much seems to happen too soon. A roof over the head, a spacious mansion with all amenities and necessities in place, an instant job et al... all this in a matter of a few days in a new township seems so unreal.

Thankfully, the film comes on track in the penultimate portions. The moment the girl calls up her father and set things straight - from this point onwards, TEREE SANG is back on its feet. Of course, the courtroom drama could've been far more impactful.

Despite the blemishes in its writing, there's no denying that TEREE SANG is easily amongst Satish Kaushik's most accomplished works. Sachin-Jigar's music has that freshness that this subject demands and at least two songs deserve a strong mention, especially 'More Saiyyan'. The camerawork is vibrant at places.

Ruslaan underplays his part beautifully. The best part is, it's not one of those conventional roles that show the hero flexing his muscles or beating up 10 people at the same time. He enacts the boy next door part with complete understanding. Sheena is a surprise. Dew-fresh and adorable, the debutante looks perfect for the part. Her confidence and performance, both are wonderful.

Rajat Kapoor is excellent. Neena Gupta is natural. Satish Kaushik delivers a winning performance. The viewers will love him. Sushmita Mukherjee Bundela is first-rate. Anupam Kher, in a brief role, is perfect.

On the whole, TEREE SANG has a new story tell and that is its biggest USP. At the box-office, the film may be a slow starter, but has the merits to pick up with word of mouth if the youth as also the family audiences take to it.

Teree Sang - Movie Review

Pun unintended, but this film on teenage pregnancy fails to deliver what it promises
By Aparajita Ghosh

It's hard to tell what director Satish Kaushik wanted to convey through Teree Sang? Did he want to highlight the issue of teenage pregnancy or did he wish to underscore the respect for the life of an unborn child? Did he want to put the irresponsible, too-busy-to-care parents in the dock, or did he want to make an example of the teenage kids who choose to parent rather than abort their love child? Honestly, the message, if any, from 'Teree Sang' is pretty garbled.

For starters, the love story in the film rehashes the pummeled-to-death clich of the poor-guy-rich-girl romance. Kuku (
Ruslaan Mumtaz ) whose dad (Satish Kaushik) is an auto-rickshaw driver, falls for the rich girl Maahi (Sheena Shahabadi). Largely ignored by her busy parents (Rajat Kapoor and Neena Gupta), Maahi finds a friend and a companion in Kuku. On the New Year's eve, after downing a couple of drinks, Kuku and Mahi get a little romantic and we all can guess what they do next. However, their 'birds and bees' experiment ends up getting a call from the stork.

The next thing we know is Maahi gets pregnant and her parents are fuming. Her dad wants her to abort the kid, but she surprisingly wants to keep it. What follows is a lot of headache for the parents and a journey of self discovery for the young lovers as they elope to give their unborn child a chance to live. There's also some courtroom drama debating the question of ethics regarding teenage pregnancy.
'Teree Sang' starts off fine but keeps veering off into a somewhat fantasy land. Guess what! The underage lovers elope and within days they manage to get a plush house. If only life was so easy! Secondly, the characterization of Maahi doesn't come across as convincing. She's shown as an immature, dreamy little girl who suddenly transforms into a strong-headed personality choosing to undergo the whole pregnancy and bear the child.

Ruslaan Mumtaz manages to play his part nicely but Sheena is mostly plain in her expressions. Rajat Kapoor and Neena Gupta appear uninterested in their roles. Satish Kaushik has a significant part and is a complete natural in it.

If only, the director Kaushik was as good.

Movie review: Tere Sang

Cast: Ruslaan Mumtaaz, Sheena Shahabadi, Satish Kaushsik, Rajat Kapoor, Sushmita Mukerjee, Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher

Director: Satish Kaushik

Fifteen year old Mahi (Sheena) is going to be a mommy, and seventeen year old Kukoo aka Kabir (Ruslaan) a daddy. The central idea has been stolen from 'Juno', bittersweet indie Hollywood hit about teenage pregnancy and parenthood and responsibility. If only Satish Kaushik had retained more of the honesty of the original, 'Tere Sang' would have been a revolutionary Hindi film.

Even if the conception is less than immaculate, it's lumped on too much champagne: it's a starry night, the 'kidults' are in a camp, they get high and they do the thing – the camera stays decorously out of the tent, all we see are shadows merging. The same confusion colours the film: should it present the first pair of teenage Indian kids who have sex, with the girl pushing, and the boy pulling? Or should it soft-soap everything?

The words 'pregnancy' and 'abortion' are mentioned only for form's sake. No consequences are explored, and a terrific opportunity to say something relevant on such an important issue is lost.

Kaushik cops out majorly. Mahi is like that—attention-seeking, looking-for-love-- only because she gets no attention from her ever-busy parents (Rajat and Neena), not because she is a hormonally-charged fifteen-going-on-sixteen willing lass.

Instead of throwing up his hands, Kabir is determined to take care of his baby, and will do anything-- from hauling bricks to gas cylinders-- to make ends meet while on an idyllic retreat to a hilly cottage. The parents are against them, so the only option is to run away, see?

In the most improbable twist of all the improbable twists in the film, Mahi's outraged father is forced into defending his daughter in court. 'Yeh sab sirf meri galati hai', he says piously, as the judge (Anupam Kher) looks on in befuddlement.

Really? And we always thought it took two.

Movie Review: Teree Sang (2009)
Teree Sang: Has its heart in its place…but
Rating: 2 out of 5*
Starring: Ruslaan Mumtaz, introducing Sheena Shahabadi, Rajat Kapoor, Satish Kaushik, Neena Gupta and Anupam Kher
Director: Satish Kaushik
While the poster designs of the film with a teenage girl shown pregnant suggests it to be a blatant copy of Oscar winning film Juno, the fact is Teree Sang is not. It is also not really similar to Preity Zinta's Kya Kehna though it too dealt with a very young unmarried girl getting pregnant. But despite having its heart in the right place, Teree Sang doesn't really register any impact on the viewer.
Maahi (Sheena) is the only child of rich parents (Rajat Kapoor and Neena Gupta). She strikes friendship with Kabir aka Kukko (Ruslaan) whose parents (Kaushik and Sushmita Mukherjee) belong to the lower strata of the society. Their friendship turns into love and during a camping on the New Year's Eve, in a drunken state they end up having sex. Maahi gets pregnant and all hell breaks loose While Maahi wants to keep the baby, her father opposes it. She then elopes with Kabir so that she can deliver her child. What further complications it all leads to forms the rest of the film.
Kaushik's direction falls in the category of "strictly okay' but as an actor he has his impressive moments playing a rickshaw driver. Screenplay by Jainendra Jain, Sanjay Chauhan and Anuj Kapoor is plain insipid at times. One wonders why the girl (Sheena) whom you should feel the maximum sympathy for falling in such a mess has been given an extremely irritating childish tone to speak her lines. It starts grating on your nerves after a point of time. The music too hardly has any recall value.
Ruslaan Mumtaz has tremendous screen presence and given a good script and a good director can work wonders. Sheena makes a confident debut but her dialogue delivery needs to improve. Rajat Kapoor is good and so is Sushmita Mukherjee. Anupam Kher in a short role is impressive as usual. Neena Gupta is okay.
Teree Sang is not really a bad film but just that it is not good enough worth an immediate rush to your nearest multiplex.

I watched it today....and i liked it.
The USP of the movie is its new story.
This movie is a good attempt about teenage pregnancy.
And all the actors have done a good job in the movie.
Overall, its a good movie.
If i had to rate it i will give it a 3.5!
