Bollywood has had many prostitutes. Don't get me wrong. Many of our leading ladies have enacted the role of a prostitute. From the courtesean with a golden heart to the loud street smart hooker. With commercial success, our leading ladies want critical acclaim and an award worthy of their self perceived mettle. Here are some examples of famous prostitutes in Bollywood.

Rekha- Umrao Jaan and many others
She has almost been typecast with the role of a courtesean. Her legendary film "Umrao Jaan" is a cult classic and one of the most recognizable characters in Bollywood.

Madhuri Dixit As Chandrumukhi
-The saving grace of Devdas, she shone as the irrisistable Chandrumukhi. Chandrumukhi loved Devdas but he loved Paro, and the audience love Madhuri. Her performance lifted the movie form medicricy and put the much needed entertaniment value in the second half.

Aishwarya Rai- Umrao Jaan.
The remake was not as successfull critically as the first. Both versions were not superhits at the Box Office, but Aishwarya's version was considered mediocre infront of Rekha's. Nevertheless, Aishwarya was the only highlight of this film in which she looked ethereal and gave one of her career best performances. Plus, any actress would give her right arm to play the role of Umrao ( Priyanka's words when she was being considered for the role)

Tabu- Mumtaz
Chandani Bar, Directed by Madhur Bandrakar, was about the Mumbai underworld, including prostitution, dance bars and gun crime won Tabu a National Award, IIFA, Screen, and Zee Cine award for best Actress. Not FilmUnfare!

Meena Kumari as Sahibjaan
The film 1972 indian film Pakeezah has become a cult classic and was one of the many classic characters portrayed by Meena Kumari. Sadly, she died weeks after it's release, which lead the flop film to become a cult classic after people flocked the theaters to get one last look at Meena.

Rani Mukherji In Laaga Chunari Main Daag and Sawariya

Kareena Kapoor- Chameli
The film was a turning point for Kareena. She played a prostitute who was sold to a brothel by her uncle when she was young. As the tough, smart street girl. Kareena won the Filmfare for Best Performance.

Preity Zinta- Madhu
Preity was the soul of Chori Chori Chupke Chupke and her role as the Pretty Woman like lovable prostitute won over audiences.

Chalte Chalte yunhi koi mil gaya tha! hai the poetry in the song, the beauty of her facial expressions, the beuty of her dance the sofistication of her acting! Tremendous.. And madhuri dixit in devdas.. absolutely amazing.. "kahe ched ched mohe" her dance in that song is out of this world. Truely both ladies are legends.

I haven't seen all of the movies, but I think Tabu did a fab job in chandni bar.. saw it a long time back..
