Moving out of her boss' room, Kumkum took her place again and stared at the idol of Lord Krishna, without any human expression. She hardly cried after the last month and nor did she smile!

Kumkum looked up to her eyes and then, Nikita noticed the moistness in her eyesā¦
Keeping the plate aside, she hugged Kumkum tightā¦
"Aaj birthday hai uska Nikitaā¦"She sobbed hard and it was perhaps, the first time she was doing so.

Nikita moved out of the shabby one bedroom apartment and rushed to the similar looking apartment next doors. Knocking it once only, woke its residents.
"Kya hua Niki? itni raat ko?" Sapna draped a dupatta over her faded, cotton night gown.
"Kumkum ki tabiyat theek nahin haiā¦tu thodi der ke liye aa sakti hai?..."She pleaded.
"Jaldi chalā¦"Without any ado, Sapna ran barefoot to their room.
"Kumkum?...kya hua?..."Sapna settled herself on the mattress placed on the floor, where Kumkum was groaning in a low tone.
"Main theeā¦.aahā¦theek hunā¦ā¦"she held her hand.
"Ise dard bhi ho raha hai aurā¦thodi si vomiting bhi hui thiā¦"Nikita informed.
"Dhania hai?...main abhi kadha bana deti hunā¦"sapna caressed her stomach a bit and then, rushed to the kitchen to make kadha for her.
The kadha did wonders, as Kumkum fell into a deep slumber after drinking it, relieved of the pain. Sapna still, caressed her stomach as Kumkum felt better by the gesture.
"Is agle hafte doctor ke paas lejana hoga naā¦"Sapna asked Nikita.
"Nahinā¦check-up date toh isi week ki thi par abhi haath thoda tang thaā¦meri choti behen ki fees jani thi aurā¦Kumkum neb hi bas davaiyon ke paise rakhe aur baaki mujhe de diyeā¦isiliyeā¦"Niki looks at Kumkum's pale face.
"Agle hafte Arul ko salary milni haiā¦phir hum log check-up karva dengeā¦"Sapna assures.
They had been a family to each other-sharing joys, sorrows and pains. Though Kumkum had known them since 2 months only, but they were her family nowā¦
