Ba stays loyal to Kyunki...

TV'S FAVOURITE GRANDMOTHER: Sudha Shivpuri as Ba in Kyunki...
Sudha Shivpuri, the small screen's Ba, has had a tough decision to make.

After being the matriarch of the Virani parivar in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (Star Plus) for almost five years, she was looking for a drastic image change.

Playing girlfriend-cum-granny to Ronit (Amit Jain) in Ye Meri Life Hai (Sony) seemed an attractive proposition.

She was all set to shed her saris and do away with the tears for designer salwars and lots of funny moments. Now, however, Ba has refused to do the soap. Here's why….

What made you go back on your decision?
I was told that the second generational leap in Kyunki… would take place sometime in April, after which I would be shown dead in the show. So I took on Ye Meri Life Hai as the role looked perfect for me.

But now, my exit in Kyunki… will happen only around July-August. Both Kyunki… and Ye Meri Life Hai are dailies. There's no way I can manage both. Every month, from the 1st to the 20th, I shoot for Kyunki…. That leaves me with little or no time to shoot for Ye Meri Life Hai.

Was it a difficult decision to make?
Yes it was. I was sad that I had to let Ye Meri Life Hai go.

According to the buzz Ekta Kapoor told you not to take on the show?
Wherever did you hear that? There is no such thing. It's just that I do not want to take on assignments that I know I can't manage. I don't want to harass my producers. I don't like to keep people waiting for me.

But the producers of Ye Meri Life Hai (Optimystix) were very keen on you.
Yes, I know that. They wanted to present me in a totally new look. It would have been an image very different from Ba.

So will you continue doing Kyunki?
At the moment, yes, but I am open to a weekly show; one that can be balanced with a daily.

What happened to your acting school —- the Om Shivpuri Academy?
I did run it for a couple of months but today's students are very impatient.

They want to be actors in three to four days. They would tell me to teach them the dialogues of Basanti! It left me totally disillusioned. I formed part of the third batch that passed out of the National School of Drama (NSD).

For three years, we had to go through the training. How could I teach them all that in three days?
