Chapter 1
A soothsayer predicted that she will exist for love and will die for love...
Banishka knew this ever since she was born. It was written in her destiny to bleed for the one she loved. She was the princess of Balsam, an empire located in the mid west India.
King Vayansh Rajput and Queen Gayatri Rajput knew their daughter was one in a million.
They, even now, recalled how much they had to endure to have their precious child. They had visited every temple, performed offerings to every god, donated as much as possible. Queen Gayatri was blamed as infertile, and King Vayansh was being forced to remarry. As much as he loved his wife dearly, his parents were compelling him, and with each passing day, it was getting worse for them.
Then, one blooming summer day, she gave him the good news. He still remembered the fragrance of fresh blooming flowers infused with the earthy soil in the serene breeze. He expressed his happiness by throwing a grand celebration, donating gold coins, and leaving no stone unturned. His parents were extremely pleased that their bloodline will be carried by their coming descendant.
Afterwards, Vayansh got busy with expanding his empire, whilst his wife's health started to deteriorate. When he got this news, he quickly left everything, and stayed with her. The child was not nurturing properly and Gayatri had complications. Some people blamed the King for celebrating too early for his child that is considered inauspicious; others' alleged that the queen was a witch. Despite this, Gayatri convinced Vayansh to resume his work. Vayansh clearly remembers that he was visiting the farmlands when a messenger told him that his wife went into labor.
He quickly got on the horse and rode home. The road, trees, and sky seemed endless, and he rode as fast as possible. When he got to the palace and heard his wife's piercing screams, his heart ached for her. He reflected on how much she had to go through to give him an heir to his empire. Midwives were attending to her, encouraging and soothing her. An old woman came out; her old, shaggy, wrinkly skin that was tanned in the parched sun face was outlined with ugly tension streaks. She told him that his wife might not make it through this pregnancy. His head dizzied and dreadful thoughts clouded his brain, and his heart ached, literally. Everyone thought that she wouldn't make it through, however destiny had something else in store for them; Queen Gayatri gave birth to a beautiful daughter and was out of danger.
Afterwards, he vowed to protect, shield, and love his wife and daughter. His wife, who went through so much to make him happy, and his daughter, who brought happiness, joy, prosperity in his life. They named their daughter Banishka Vayansh Rajput and close people addressed her as Bani. She was the apple of her father's eyes who spoiled her to no extent. Gayatri worried a lot, but neither Vayansh nor Bani paid any heed to her concerns.
Bani grew up, entered her teen years, and experienced a change in her behavior, body, and feelings towards the opposite sex. Gayatri became more careful, protecting her child from the cruelty of the world.
Banishka Vayansh Rajput was very beautiful with fair creamy skin; she inherited her mother's good looks alongside her father's demeanor. She was an intelligent child, curious about everything, yet always respectful whether with her parents, servants, commoners.
At the age of 17, Bani completed her studies and enforced her father to let her study further. She was very curious about things around her, so, Vayansh appointed a personal teacher for her. In the mornings, they strolled around in the garden, pond, village to discover new things; in the evenings, her sweet and honey voice filled the palace with a peaceful sensation when she did aarti. She also took dance lessons for classical Indian dance. She always went to the village for her lessons as it gave her some time away from the palace. She loved the feeling of ghungaroos clinking on her every step and changing rhythms whenever she wished.
Her teacher, Shobna Raj, whom she addressed as Masi, was one of the best gurus'. She was a widow with no child. Even at the age of 54, she moved with such a grace and aura, that even Bani often felt jealous. Bani imagined Masi as a very beautiful woman when she was young. The dance she learned from Masi always fascinated her, and sprouted a new excitement in her. She went every week for 3-4 days after her class.
It was one of worst days in the kingdom, the whip-lashing rain, the roaring thunder, the electrifying lighting, alongside the cold, harsh wind, were playing havoc with the sky. Everyone wanted to stay in their secure, safe, and calm houses; however, Bani wanted to go for her dancing lessons. Gayatri thought that Bani had gone mad thinking about the dancing in the bad weather. Her personal teacher, even, cancelled his lesson today, but Bani being Bani, was adamant to go.
"Bani, aap nahin ja sakti, bahar mausam bahut kharab hai" Gayatri tried to explain to Bani…
Bani was resolute on going to see Masi "Nahin Maa, hum jayenge... aur abhi hi jayenge, aap hume nahin rok sakti"
"Bani, aap hamari baat kyun nahin sun rahi...humne kaha na ki Masi ko dekhne ke liye hum kisi ko bhej denge..."
Masi was sick, and Bani wanted to go see her no matter what.
"Nahin Maa...hum abhi ja rahe hain", Bani moved towards the door, all dressed up to go, but her mother's voice boomed through the room.
"BANISHKA...agar aap ne ek kadam bhi agge badaya toh bahut bura hoga", Gayatri was mad.
"Aap apne kamre mein jayien gi... ABHI" she ordered.
"Priyanka, inhe kuch samjayigi aap...inhe yahan se le kar jayie" Gayatri demanded one of their servants, who was about the same age as Bani, to take her to her room.
"Bani, aap Maa sey kyun lad rahin hain...aap teek toh hain" she asked her as soon as they were in Bani's room.
"Piya, humein Masi ko dekhne jaana hai" she said as she moved towards the balcony. She stripped her clothes off; underneath, she was wearing one piece garment clothes, which were usually intended for men.
As Piya turned around, she saw no one near the balcony. She ran towards the window and saw Bani climbing down the grapevine.
Piya was horrified, "Banishka, agar Maa ko pata chal gaya toh...yeh aap kaya kar rahin hain". The sweat beads were now forming on Piya's forehead.
"Kuch nahin hoga piya, aap tab tak humare kapde pahin kar so jayen...hum abhi aatey hain...aapko hamari dosti ki kasam" and she sat on a horse and rode away towards the village.
The weather had become worse, and the wind was pushing the horse back, making it harder for Bani to ride. The horse was neighing and slowing down. The lighting struck again, this time very close to Bani, the horse jumped back and ran away, throwing Bani off balance. She fell on her back, on the hard, solid, wet grass, and she struggled to breathe. As she sat up, pushing her wet, open hair back, which clung to her face, she saw a hand extended towards her.
She took the hand, stood up, and cleaned herself. Then, she looked at the person who helped her.
"Shukria..." she said as she looked up
A very handsome stranger was grinning at her, exposing his pearly teeth. His smile reached his eyes, which were full of mystery. He was broad, built, tall man, and Bani kept on staring at him. They both stood there until the horse came back, and neighed. They broke their eye locking session, as Bani sat on the horse; she gazed back, smiled, and rode off.
He also got on his horse, smiling, and rode away to his destination. The lighting struck again...
Masi's house was in the heart of the village and not very huge. It was an old mansion that Masi's husband owned, until he passed away. Bani got to her house, tied her horse, and ran inside.
"Masi, aap kahan hain..." she yelled looking for her
"Bani...beti aap yahan kaise...." Masi questioned her when she heard her voice.
"Masi..." Bani ran to her as she spotted her in her room.
"Bani...aap yahan...is mausam mein?" she questioned
"Masi, aap tekh toh hain...Piya ne bataya ki aap ki tabiyat" she was very worried.
Masi explained to Bani that it was due to the weather, she shouldn't have listened to Piya, and come in this ugly weather.
"Masi...aap ne dava li?" she asked Masi
"Nahin beta, meine nahin li lekin..."
"Masi...hum abhi vaid ji ko bula kar latey hain" Bani got up to get the doctor, but Masi stopped her.
"Arrey, Nahin, Bani...mera bhanja gaya hain...vo ley ayega"
"Aapka Bhanja?" she questioned
"Kyun...arrey...main batana bhul gayi...vo aaj hi mere liye aya hai...aur atey hi chala bhi gaya"
"Uska naam Jai hai, bahut dur se aya hai" she continued and they kept on talking, until, Bani realized that she should get back home.
"Masi, hume jana hoga" and she got up, took her blessings and ran outside.
"Arrey...Baniiiiiii", but she was long gone.
The weather hadn't changed one bit, the rains were still pouring shoddily, creating mud everywhere. AS she untied her horse, she thought about her encounter with the stranger, and unknowingly, smiled. She sat on the horse and rode towards the palace before anyone realized her absence.
Jai was back with Masi's medicines. He was completely wet, so he altered his clothes.
"Jai, beta...abh bata...tu yahan kaise? itne dino ke baad?" she questioned him.
Jai gave Masi her medicines, and lay with his head in her lap.
"Masi, vahan dil nahin lagta...aur vaise bhi main apna kam shuru karna chata hoon, lekin abhi toh main apse milne aya hoon. Aap bhul gayi ke iss sal ka basant mela main kaise bhool sakta hoon" he told her.
"Jai, tu hamesha mela dekhne ata hai...mein bhut khush hoon ki tu iss bar bhi aya hai" she expressed her happiness because she often felt lonely. She massaged Jai's head and hair as he always loved her massage. He sighed in content and his eye lids started to close.
"Haan Masi main bhi bhut khush hoon" he said as he his breathing became even.
"Jai, tu shadi kyun kar leta..." she questioned him.
She waited for a reply, but after few seconds, she realized that he had fallen asleep.
The palace seemed very quiet, maybe, more than usual. She tied the horse in the stable and quickly ran towards her balcony window. The heels of her boots dug into the muddy soil and she struggled to run. She, expertly, took the grapevine and climbed up the balcony.
She saw her mother scolding the servants and Priyanka was crying profusely. She hid behind the balcony wall.
"Priyanka, Bani kahan hai...aap itni laparva kaise ho sakti hain" Queen Gayatri was worried for her daughter's safety.
"Humein mauf kar dijiye...Unho ne dosti ki kasam di thi" Priyanka replied.
"Hey bhagwan...dosti ki kasam...abh kahan dudhengein unhein" Gayatri sobbed and sat down on the bed.
Bani, meekly, came forward into her room, and as soon as Priyanka saw her, she leaped onto her.
"Bani...aap aagayi...aap teek toh hain" she asked Bani as she untangled herself.
"Bani...aap itni zid kyun kati hain" her mother asked her while hugging her.
"Yeh baat apke pita ji ko malum ho chuki hai...vo abhi aa rahein hain" Gayatri informed Bani.
She instructed Bani to change her clothes and appearance. She was all muddy, wet, and shivering. As soon as Bani had a bath and came out, she started sneezing.
"Arrey, Bani beta, aap to bimar hain..." she heard her father's voice.
"Humne suna ki aap akele iss mausam mein gaoun gayin thi" he asked her
Bani sat on her bed, and nodded her head.
"Bani, aap apni maa ko janti hain...phir bhi...humein apse yeh umeed nahin thi...hum bahar kya gaye aap ne toh sab ko pareshan kar diya..." he complained to her about her carelessness.
"Maf kar di jiye naa...agey se aasa nahin hoga..." she hugged her father and asked for forgiveness.
After dinner, Bani came back into her room, and sprawled herself on the majestic bed. The satin bed sheets were strangely soft, the curtains were dancing in the wind, the moon was glistening brightly, and the stars were shimmering as well. Bani had never noticed these things before and she was surprised herself. She stood in the balcony, gazing intently at the evidently lit sky, and listened the chirping of crickets near the pond. The reflecting moon and the caressing breeze made Bani's cheeks crimson from blushing. The stranger had left an ardent effect on her.
