Who says Katrina can't speak proper Hindi?

By Subhash K Jha

Who says Katrina can't speak proper Hindi? She's been practising constantly with friends and in her dubbing, so much so that Katrina has almost lost her voice.

The dubbing for Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani has taken its toll on her throat. Raj Kumar Santoshi is always known to be very particular about his actors' lamguage. For Ranbir in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani who has a lot of colloquial Hindi to speak, he has personally been supervising the dubbing.

But Ranbir is a very skilled dialogue deliverer. And getting the rustic colloquialism right is a cakewalk for him

For Katrina dubbing is the most difficult part of the acting process. After all she was initially dubbed by professional artistes. She finally won the right to speak on screen in her own voice in spite of a thick British accent.

And now Katrina Kaif is going through the worst tribulation of her brief career.

Dubbing for Raj Kumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is the most challenging thing Katrina has ever done.

"I don't have any colloquial lines like Ranbir. I play this Catholic Bandra girl who's very dramatic. She's funny to others. But not to herself.

So when I cry I have to cry real tears but make sure they come across as funny First of all the lines are not comic in the dubbing theatre. So I've to recreate the laughter on the sets in a studio without knowing if I am being funny enough."

For Katrina it's excruciating. "I don't know whether I'm getting it right or not. I'm doing the dubbing under supervision. But this is the most difficult film I've dubbed for."

Now that she's almost finished dubbing she plans to go through the entire dubbing in Santoshi's film and re-do the portions Santoshi isn't satisfied with.

A bigger challenge now awaits Katrina. In Prakash Jha's Rajneeti she must recreate all the rhetorics that she mouthed on stage in front of thousands of spectators. as a female politician.

"The speeches I made have been taped. Now I have to listen to them, get the accent tone and voice quality right and dub in a studio."

Easier done than said.

God I'll never the understand how these filmmakers operate. They'd rather spend money on teaching a non-actress how to act than pluck a real talent outta the street. Katrina thinks dubbing is tough? No wonder, she can hardly act. Regardless, I don't begrudge this girl's career.....she has mouths to feed afterall, and this is a much respectable job than what she did before Gustad picked her.

^ i don't get the whole "she's working cuz she has mouths to feed" business, how many dependent siblings does she have? and the adult ones can't they go get a job themselves? and her mom's a psychiatrist and they live in UK, i can understand paying for their education etc, but srsly University fees would just be a tiny fraction of what she earns

i think it was just an excuse to justify her stripping before Salman came to her rescue as a knight in shining armor

well no body comes in the industry being a great actress...even rani mukerji in the beginning had probs wid dialouge delivery n gradually became better...if they keep on taking great actresses then how would they expect the new comers to improve n make a mark...there is always a learning curve wid this job...kat has never played intense roles before so its obvious that now as shez playin some serious characters she'll face difficulty but it doesnot mean she shuld leave...dere is always a possibilty of improvement n i think all these great actresses now were at one point not so great ..its thx to the producers for working on their acting capabilities ...remember this is not like regular jobs..its more of a learning process which continues till the very end ..n i appreciate producers working on some1's acting skills rather than jst presenting her as a show piece..im soo glad wid this filmaker...

Her hindi has improved a lot, that I have noticed. But she does need to work on her dialogue delivery. Not related to this but I still can't get over her chemistry with John. If there wasn't a Salman Khan or Bipasha Basu in the picture, I would have wanted to see off-screen sparks as well.

Yea i don't get it either, everyone keeps saying how she had mouths to feed, so I just chimed in.😆 And I've heard this girl had a pretty tough life in London and rumor is that the Brithish mom, Kashmiri dad angle is just a story weaved. They say she does not have a drop of Indian blood. But who knows.....its just gossip. Could be could not be true. Strange
Koizakapoor, I understand you are her fan. But I disagree with you that no actress comes knowing acting. That is totally false. Nandita Das, Konkona Sen, Chitragandha Singh were fabulous in their first movies itself. You could not even tell they were first timers. Sure, Katrina has language problem, but for how long is she going to use the same excuse? She debuted in 2003 and its 2009 now. That is 6 years! I say its time for BS to be over. She's had enough time to learn and I have not seen her improve. I mean she cannot even carry a bimbette chamak challo role properly. Its nice all these filmmakers are giving her the time of the day, but this is not fair to the rest who can actually act.
