Mumbai:

Petite Bollywood star Katrina Kaif said that she will never do a film for money.

The 24-year-old actress, whose earnings support her family of seven sisters, said there are times when she feels that she needs the money being offered to do a particular film.

"I am in a panic situation. But, If I succumb to such pressures, I know the audience will not respect me," Katrina said in an interview.

Looking back at her career, she said she considers her journey so far as a learning experience.

"So far, I went through a learning phase having learnt discipline from my co-stars Akshay Kumar, Govinda, Salman. They have helped me to strengthen my fundamentals," she said.

"But if you stagnate, the growth is over. I have done many comedy films. Success of films like 'Partner', 'Singh is Kinng' gets you to a very wide audience reach. But for greater gains, you need to take greater gambles. If it works, you get respect and recognition," the young actress felt.

Katrina is highly optimistic of her upcoming film 'New York' releasing on June 26.

"I saw the real me in the film. When I first asked director Kabir Khan about my character, he told me that Maya is like every girl... she is you without make up and costumes.

I realised that he was telling me to be myself in the film," Katrina recalled.

Katrina said she never keeps high expectations from her films before release.

"Until the audiences go and see the film and give their stamp of approval, pre-release hypes and expectations don't mean anything," she said.

My character Maya is very unlike what I have played so far. "Adi (producer Aditya Chopra) had told me when I signed the movie that the character will present a side of me which even I don't know," she recalled.

"When I saw the film last week, I saw me. I can't be myself in every movie of mine. But when that happens, the film has to be special. I was taken aback at Kabir's grasp of the subject and story telling style. The real star of the film is Kabir Khan," Katrina said.

Audiences should not go with pre-conceived notions to watch 'New York', she said. "The film has all Indian emotions, but its narrative is very English movie style," she said.

'New York' may not be a typical masala entertainer, but has all the right ingredients to connect with the audiences," Katrina said.

The actress said she does not want to be part of preachy, art house movies. "I believe cinema is a medium to entertain," she said.

Katrina said she was ready to take greater risks to move up in her career and films like Raj Kumar Santoshi's 'Aajab Prem ki Gajab Kahani', Prakash Jha's 'Rajniti' show her intention to attempt something different.

Katrina said her career was getting her 100 per cent focus at present adding that she did not want to be complacent and disappoint her audience.

She said she feels confident enough to "give something more" to the characters she is portraying now.

"I am not working to earn a living, but I am living movies. I am finding me and enjoying the process," she said.

Recalling her experience during the three month shooting schedule of 'New York' in Philadelphia, Katrina said when she landed on the sets for the first time, she felt the film was not her type. "I said to myself what I am doing here, this is not my space",

"When the shoot came to an end, I didn't want to leave. I had enjoyed the creative process so much," she said. 'Aajab Prem ki Gajab Kahani' with Ranbir Kapoor will be her next release, followed by Akshay Kumar's 'De Dana Dan'.

"We will start shooting for 'Rajniti' from August end. So far, we have shot the political portions in Bhopal," she added.

she really does work very hard, and it shows - but didn't she used to say that shes only here to work, make money for her family and isnt interested in anything else? either way, looks like her views have changed since she can be picky now - and if new york and rajnithi do well they should help her get less glam doll roles
