New guy Karan Kaur has been included into Balaji Telefilms. The old member Rakshanda Khan was also present in the press meet. We guess if she has any role in Ekta's new serials.
October 13th, 2008
NDTV Imagine today announced that Balaji Telefilms will produce a prime-time daily on the channel. The creative team of NDTV Imagine and Balaji Telefilms have had a successful relationship in the past, creating some of the most popular and highly rated shows on Indian television.
The show which will air at 10.30 pm is a daily prime time drama and is slated to go on-air in a couple of weeks.
Announcing the association with Balaji Telefilms, Shailja Kejriwal, EVP- Content, NDTV Imagine said, "We are delighted to be working with Ekta once again. She has a great understanding of the pulse of our viewers and together we will create stories that will refresh and delight our audience. It is also quite a coincidence that the first time we interacted with Ekta was for the 10.30 pm slot, just like this one."
Adds Ekta Kapoor of Balaji Telefilms, "This is like home coming; to be back working with Sameer and Shailja. They are the ones who gave me my first break and I treat them like my bosses. I am pleased to be working with them again as they give me all the support and freedom and I will work with the same passion as I used to earlier".

Balaji Telefilms (Ekta Kapoor) have been known in the past to focus on massively emotional family dramas, typically involving saas-bahus with each character having some personality streak (either a villain, or sweeter than anybody in the world). Now that those serials were starting to lose their charm (and their TRP's), it is no wonder that Balaji has changed and is starting to make different type of serials.
'Kitni Mohabbat Hain' does not have an entirely new story, but it has a fresh look, and the characters playing the main role of Arjun Punj (Karan Kundra) and Arohi Sharma (Kritika Kamra) seem to be able to emote okay so far.
The story is not very different. Arjun, the son of a rich man, DK, is very arrogant, and not trusting towards woman at all (since he believes that his mother left him when he was a young child). It is then that Arohi enters his life (she is forced to start working when her father is forced to quit his job) in the role of Arjun's personal assistant at work. It is quite clear to her that Arjun is arrogant, but she falls for him; however, this is only temporary. Soon Arjun makes it clear to Arohi that he is getting engaged to somebody else, and then humiliates Arohi at the engagement party.
Arohi is shell-shocked, and decides to try and become somebody, bigger than Arjun, and decides to move to Bombay to further her ambition. In the meantime, Arjun's mother reveals the truth to Arjun, causing Arjun's world to crumble. He realizes that whatever he believed in was a lie, and also realizes that he truly loves Arohi, and decides to support her in whatever she wants to become.
Arjun follows Arohi to Mumbai, and supports her in many ways (including some idiotic scenes in which Arjun takes off his gold chain in the rain so that people waiting for the bus in rain leave the shelter after the chain, giving space to Arohi and her sisters). At the same time, whatever he does is done in such a way that it seems to Arohi that Arjun is still mocking her, giving her the courage (out of hate) to keep on going on for what she wants. She wants to become a singer, and has just won a contest for a recording.
"Nothing has changed. Programming evolved and ended in a certain way. That's perfectly natural. What's Ghajini? It's nothing but a Badle Ki Aag kind of formula film of the '80s. But it's a well made and well-told story. Innovation is the key word. What's Balika Vadhu? It's a saas-bahu show. But it's well-made and well-told and I am glad that it has proved that a well-made story can break new ground," says Sameer who is confident that 2009 is going to a good year for Imagine. Bandini and Kitni Mohabbat Hai are just the starters. Main course is yet to come. In the next three months as many as five new shows will be launched. With Jassuben moving on to weekends and Red Chillies' weekend sitcom Ghar Ki Baat Hai slated for telecast in another two weeks, Imagine will also get its weekend band in place.
| Not without Ekta Kapoor, says Sameer Nair | |

Sameer Nair, the head of NDTV's entertainment division, NDTV Imagine, is all set to reap the benefits of the TV industry boom but not without his favourite producer Ekta Kapoor. "Ekta has been my favourite producer and I hope to continue with her. We are in talks with her as well as other major producers like Hatsoff, Endemol, Synergy," said Nair who is planning to launch NDTV Imagine's first channel at the end of the year. Nair, who proved his credentials as the CEO of STAR Entertainment India, promises to bring changes in the television business, which is apparently seeing a 22 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR). "We are planning to be different but we are not planning to be different for the sake of being different. We are planning to be different to be ahead," said Nair. "When you are launching a new brand you look for differentiation and that goes without saying. We are doing Hindi general entertainment and it will have soaps, dramas, game shows, singing shows, celebrity shows movies because that is the basic staple of general entertainment. But they are not going to be the same and how different are they going to be, wait and see." To achieve his new goals he teams up with Bollywood's talented and successful filmmaker Karan Johar. "Karan is involved in the project in many ways. We would work closely with Karan to develop new ideas and concepts. We have been discussing them. We hope Karan will do some shows for us. In fact, we will force him to do some shows for us." Quite a few big players, including Nair's former colleague Peter Mukherjea, are reportedly coming up with new channels but the former is unfazed and says it will rev up the competition. "We all are friends and we are working. In this business there are many channels and every year when a new channel is launched people say there are too many channels, what will happen now? Usually what happens is that people make good programmes, create good entertainment but the one who makes the best wins the race. Of course, we face competition for ratings and viewership. But there is no war among us." For the television industry, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) report forecast that it would be worth Rs.519 billion as against Rs.191 billion currently. And Nair plans to rule the roost with the new channel, expected to go on air in December this year or January 2008. "Post launch we would like to be the number one or number two and I think that's a fair enough target. There are only three or four major players in the Hindi space. Compared to others, the Hindi general entertainment market is least cluttered." Currently, the total earning from the Hindi entertainment section is about Rs.18 billion. Talking about the space captured by his previous company, Nair said that currently STAR occupies 30 percent of the total Hindi entertainment wing. NDTV Imagine will introduce three new entertainment channels. These will be free to air and will have a preview period. "We have to yet to decide the channel name yet," said Nair referring to the first one. "In the entertainment business the premium is on quality and if you are able to create superior content people would see. We are catering to the family audience." He also cleared speculation about STAR's two prized possessions, "Koffee with Karan" and "Kaun Banega Crorepati" (KBC) moving to NDTV along with Nair. " 'Koffee...' is a property owned by STAR so it will remain with the channel. As far as KBC is concerned it has signed a five-year deal with STAR starting this year, so it will also remain with STAR TV," he said. |
Neena Gupta could not resist the lure that Balaji Telefilms holds for many actors. She is the latest to have made an entry into the Balaji camp. Neena will be playing an important role in Kitni Mohabbat Hai. Confirming the news, Ekta Kapoor said, "Yes, Neena Gupta has been signed for an important cameo on the show."
Neena, who was last seen in Saat Phere on Zee TV, lapped up the offer. She will play Savita who has been separated from her husband played by Satyajeet. Kitni Mohabbat Hai is a love story and stars newbies Karan Kundra and Kritika Kamra, along with established TV actors like Hiten Tejwani, Virendra Saxena, Sudha Shivpuri, Sheeba and Dimple Jhangiani. Kitni Mohabbat Hai will premiere on January 19. |
