Balaji Telefilms launches two new soaps with NDTV Imagine
As we enter the New Year, it's time to make way for new experiences!

Starting January 19th at 10:00 p.m., there are two more new reasons to tune-in to NDTV Imagine. The creative association of talented individuals that spawned a series of memorable and blockbuster TV shows will now unveil two great tales yet again. As part of its new programming line-up, NDTV Imagine will debut two back-to-back new shows from Balaji Telefilms. This exciting new time-band will kick start with 'Bandini' at 10:00 p.m. followed by 'Kitani Mohabbat Hai' at 10:30 p.m. and will air Monday-Thursday only on NDTV Imagine. These shows will be filled with uninterrupted moments of engaging entertainment, powerful drama, unpredictable twists and great story lines.

Breaking away from the cult of conventional soaps for the first time ever, Balaji Telefilms presents Bandini, an invigorating tale of a young girl who is forced into a marriage of convenience with an elderly man twice her age. Set in the backdrop of rural India, this narrative vividly traces the journey of Santu and her tryst with destiny. This volatile story of age, class and caste divide will see debutant Aasiya Kazi as the young girl Santu alongside TV's most popular face Ronit Roy, as destiny binds two strangers together in this stirring saga of greed, pride, deceit and traditions.

Love changes people in the most unbelievable way. How far will love take you? Is it strong enough to take up the challenges? Is it deep enough to survive all conflicts? 'Kitani Mohabbat Hai' answers these questions in more than one way for Arohi and

Arjun, the main protagonists of the show. Two completely opposite individuals, who think and behave differently, come together in this powerful and heart-warming love saga. Arohi hails from the picturesque valley of Panchgani and is a vivacious young girl who believes in the power of love, while Arjun is a cool & calm casanova who dislikes women and refuses to believe that 'someone somewhere is made for you'. Set against the backdrop of music, Kitani Mohabbat Hai is a passionate story of loving, losing and yet, living' for Arohi, Arjun and their families.

Kitani Mohabbat Hai' will see a mix of some fresh and popular faces. Karan Kundra makes his debut on television as Arjun, while Kritika Kamra essays the character of Arohi who is blessed with a melodious voice. Hiten Tejwani and a cast of talented actors like Virendra Saxena, Neena Gupta, Sudha Shivpuri, Sheeba, Dimple Jhangiani and a host of budding new talent will be seen playing significant roles in this show.

Announcing the two new shows, Shailja Kejriwal, EVP content, NDTV Imagine said, "Bandini & Kitani Mohabbat Hai are shows that capture every emotion, from love to hate and from joy to sadness and from aspirations to blind ambition. The backdrop and settings are distinct from each other and unique in their own right. The cast is fresh and the story is very entertaining. Put this together with the creative and production excellence of Balaji and NDTV Imagine and you have all the ingredients that will make these shows a staple diet with viewers for one hour, night after night"

Adds Ekta Kapoor, Creative Director, Balaji Telefilms Ltd,"I'm very pleased with the line-up of our shows we have created for NDTV Imagine. I am equally excited to be back with a 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. time-band, giving viewers a chance to experience once again, one hour of pure entertainment from Balaji Telefilms on prime-time. I am delighted to begin my innings with NDTV Imagine with Bandini and Kitani Mohabbat Hai. The shows are an entertaining, engaging mix of storylines, settings and characters."

Refreshingly different and endearingly realistic, the shows are sure to strike a chord with viewers. So be sure to tune into 'Bandini' and 'Kitani Mohabbat Hai' only on NDTV Imagine ' as it promises to be dynamic, different, and most importantly, entertaining. -Sampurn Media

Balaji Telefilms (Ekta Kapoor) have been known in the past to focus on massively emotional family dramas, typically involving saas-bahus with each character having some personality streak (either a villain, or sweeter than anybody in the world). Now that those serials were starting to lose their charm (and their TRP's), it is no wonder that Balaji has changed and is starting to make different type of serials.
'Kitni Mohabbat Hain' does not have an entirely new story, but it has a fresh look, and the characters playing the main role of Arjun Punj (Karan Kundra) and Arohi Sharma (Kritika Kamra) seem to be able to emote okay so far.

The story is not very different. Arjun, the son of a rich man, DK, is very arrogant, and not trusting towards woman at all (since he believes that his mother left him when he was a young child). It is then that Arohi enters his life (she is forced to start working when her father is forced to quit his job) in the role of Arjun's personal assistant at work. It is quite clear to her that Arjun is arrogant, but she falls for him; however, this is only temporary. Soon Arjun makes it clear to Arohi that he is getting engaged to somebody else, and then humiliates Arohi at the engagement party.
Arohi is shell-shocked, and decides to try and become somebody, bigger than Arjun, and decides to move to Bombay to further her ambition. In the meantime, Arjun's mother reveals the truth to Arjun, causing Arjun's world to crumble. He realizes that whatever he believed in was a lie, and also realizes that he truly loves Arohi, and decides to support her in whatever she wants to become.
Arjun follows Arohi to Mumbai, and supports her in many ways (including some idiotic scenes in which Arjun takes off his gold chain in the rain so that people waiting for the bus in rain leave the shelter after the chain, giving space to Arohi and her sisters). At the same time, whatever he does is done in such a way that it seems to Arohi that Arjun is still mocking her, giving her the courage (out of hate) to keep on going on for what she wants. She wants to become a singer, and has just won a contest for a recording.

Old relationship, new beginning? ALChougule

: NDTV Imagine launches two back-to-back Balaji shows in the 10 to 11 pm slot. Will it spawn the magic of Kyunki.. and Kahaani.. which was a result of creative association between Ekta Kapoor and Sameer Nair when he was at Star?
Keeping its promise of being imaginative, creative, fresh and different, NDTV Imagine began with a mixed bag of programming line-up that included action, adventure, music, dance, mythology and closer-to-life dramas. That was a year ago, January 21, 2008, to be precise. What was conspicuous by its absence was the a Balaji show on Imagine's prime time. At the time of launch Imagine's CEO Sameer Nair had said that Balaji will make some exciting shows in the latter part of 2008. It didn't happen though. Finally a year after its launch, Imagine begins its association with soap queen Ekta Kapoor with two back-to-back shows in the 10 to 11 pm time slot. "As we enter the New Year, it's time to make way for new experiences. The creative association of talented individuals that spawned a series of memorable and blockbuster TV shows will now unveil two great tales yet again," goes the press release. Obviously the reference is to the Star-Balaji (read Sameer-Ekta) alliance that led to a plethora of successful K shows which ruled the roost on prime time television for almost seven years. Probably both Sameer and Ekta are hoping to repeat the magic of their earlier successful association with Bandini and Kitni Mohabbat Hai which will premiere on January 19. In recent months, daily soaps have moved away from the conventional form of story-telling of the last eight years. By and large, aspirational programming - read larger-than-life, dreamy and heightened dramas of black and white characters and illogical happenings - has got thumbs down. Keeping with the new trend, Ekta's Bandini also promises to break away from the cult of conventional soaps. A tale of a young girl who is forced into marriage of convenience with an elderly man twice her age, the show traces the journey of Santu and her tryst with destiny. Set in rural Gujarat, Bandini is a volatile saga of age, class and caste divide with newcomer Aasiya Kazi as the young Santu and Ronit Roy as Dharamraj Mahiyavanshi, a self-made, egoistic and obstinate diamond merchant. If Bandini is a rustic saga of pride, greed and deceit targeted at family audience, Kitni Mohabbat Hai is an urban love story of Arohi and Arjun, two completely opposite individuals who think and behave differently. Arohi hails from the picturesque valley of Panchgani and is a vivacious young girl who believes in the power of love, while Arjun is a cool and clam Casanova who dislikes women and refuses to believe that 'someone somewhere is made for you'. It is a passionate story of loving, losing and living set against the backdrop of music which, according to Ekta, is for the young and young at heart viewers. "It has different colours of romance and love. Though it has issues of ideologies, it is essentially a fun show," she adds. Ekta is not only pleased with the line-up of her two shows on Imagine but is equally excited to be back with a 10 to 11 pm time band. Obviously she is nostalgic about this late prime time band where she tasted amazing success with Kyunki and Kahani and created history. But Kyunki and Kahani came at a time when there were only three general entertainment channels. Today there are as many as seven GE options and around 72 shows competing for eyeballs. Also, Imagine doesn't have a show like KBC to funnel viewers into late prime time to sample Bandini and Kitni Mohabbat Haias the case was with Kyunki and Kahani. Ekta knows pretty well that it's not going to be easy to relive or repeat past magic when some of her on-air shows are struggling for ratings. It is probably why she blames the media for calling her 'television czarina' or the 'queen of TRPs'. "I did my work to the best of my ability but the media gave me over credit for everything," she chuckles. Call it modesty or a shrewd way of passing on the blame to others when the ship is not sailing smoothly, Ekta knows it is better to talk less about TRPs. "I don't know why the ratings are bad," she shrugs. What's quite difficult to fathom is how the 'queen' of television fiction who 'knows' the pulse of audience has no clue why her shows are not delivering numbers. "Let's not compare yesterday with today or tomorrow," she pleads. The past may be perfect and present bit uncertain but Ekta is quite excited about working with old buddies Sameer and Shailja Kejriwal (Imagine's executive vice president, content) with whom she enjoys comfort level and creative freedom. Ask her why she didn't make a single show for Imagine for one year and Ekta says she didn't have a slot. "I started talking to Sir (Sameer) in August and after that things started moving," she adds. However, according to Sameer, Ekta couldn't make shows for Imagine because she was under an exclusive contract with Star. " She could make shows for rival channels only for the 9 pm slot. At the time of Imagine's launch she already had shows on Zee and Sony at 9 pm. So we decided to wait. Now that the contract doesn't exist we are re-launching our 10 to 11 pm band with Ekta's shows," he explains. Imagine had a decent launch with 55 GRPs. It did pretty well for the first few months and also made it to the third place in the GE space before losing steam. Since the past six months it's been performing average as fifth or sixth GE channel. "A lot of things happened in 2008. IPL was a big surprise and an unexpected success which came just three months after Imagine's launch. A new channel entered the fray a few months later and then came economic slowdown and workers' strike. But the year was good for us as without going overboard on budgets and indulging in stunts we delivered reasonable numbers," says Sameer. He doesn't think programming has changed much.

"Nothing has changed. Programming evolved and ended in a certain way. That's perfectly natural. What's Ghajini? It's nothing but a Badle Ki Aag kind of formula film of the '80s. But it's a well made and well-told story. Innovation is the key word. What's Balika Vadhu? It's a saas-bahu show. But it's well-made and well-told and I am glad that it has proved that a well-made story can break new ground," says Sameer who is confident that 2009 is going to a good year for Imagine. Bandini and Kitni Mohabbat Hai are just the starters. Main course is yet to come. In the next three months as many as five new shows will be launched. With Jassuben moving on to weekends and Red Chillies' weekend sitcom Ghar Ki Baat Hai slated for telecast in another two weeks, Imagine will also get its weekend band in place.

Not without Ekta Kapoor, says Sameer Nair

Sameer Nair, the head of NDTV's entertainment division, NDTV Imagine, is all set to reap the benefits of the TV industry boom but not without his favourite producer Ekta Kapoor.

"Ekta has been my favourite producer and I hope to continue with her. We are in talks with her as well as other major producers like Hatsoff, Endemol, Synergy," said Nair who is planning to launch NDTV Imagine's first channel at the end of the year.

Nair, who proved his credentials as the CEO of STAR Entertainment India, promises to bring changes in the television business, which is apparently seeing a 22 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR).

"We are planning to be different but we are not planning to be different for the sake of being different. We are planning to be different to be ahead," said Nair.

"When you are launching a new brand you look for differentiation and that goes without saying. We are doing Hindi general entertainment and it will have soaps, dramas, game shows, singing shows, celebrity shows movies because that is the basic staple of general entertainment. But they are not going to be the same and how different are they going to be, wait and see."

To achieve his new goals he teams up with Bollywood's talented and successful filmmaker Karan Johar.

"Karan is involved in the project in many ways. We would work closely with Karan to develop new ideas and concepts. We have been discussing them. We hope Karan will do some shows for us. In fact, we will force him to do some shows for us."

Quite a few big players, including Nair's former colleague Peter Mukherjea, are reportedly coming up with new channels but the former is unfazed and says it will rev up the competition.

"We all are friends and we are working. In this business there are many channels and every year when a new channel is launched people say there are too many channels, what will happen now? Usually what happens is that people make good programmes, create good entertainment but the one who makes the best wins the race. Of course, we face competition for ratings and viewership. But there is no war among us."

For the television industry, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) report forecast that it would be worth Rs.519 billion as against Rs.191 billion currently.

And Nair plans to rule the roost with the new channel, expected to go on air in December this year or January 2008.

"Post launch we would like to be the number one or number two and I think that's a fair enough target. There are only three or four major players in the Hindi space. Compared to others, the Hindi general entertainment market is least cluttered."

Currently, the total earning from the Hindi entertainment section is about Rs.18 billion.

Talking about the space captured by his previous company, Nair said that currently STAR occupies 30 percent of the total Hindi entertainment wing.

NDTV Imagine will introduce three new entertainment channels. These will be free to air and will have a preview period.

"We have to yet to decide the channel name yet," said Nair referring to the first one. "In the entertainment business the premium is on quality and if you are able to create superior content people would see. We are catering to the family audience."

He also cleared speculation about STAR's two prized possessions, "Koffee with Karan" and "Kaun Banega Crorepati" (KBC) moving to NDTV along with Nair.

" 'Koffee...' is a property owned by STAR so it will remain with the channel. As far as KBC is concerned it has signed a five-year deal with STAR starting this year, so it will also remain with STAR TV," he said.
