Authenticity does not appear to be a high priority for this show. Otherwise why include Jataka tales, Ahiravan/Mahiravan (which are later regional additions) and so on and so forth? 😆
Also, there is much even in the Valmiki text that is debatable in terms of authenticity. Volumes have been written debating various aspects of the epic back and forth. But that is an entirely separate issue and well beyond the scope of this serial. Sagars are about dragging shows for as long as possible, not good scripts.
Instead of serial makers arbitrarily taking one particular stance in these debates of authenticity, I'd like to see a complete adaptation of the Valmiki text (using as many versions of the Valmiki text as possible) from start to finish. Without bias or political correctness. That would be ideal. They can add a disclaimer that there are questions of authenticity on so and so part of the show. I mean, just for once I want to see the complete and purely Valmiki text on screen without additions or omissions.
Since there is no sign of a serial promising to do this, I guess we'll have to settle for the Sagars. I would like to see their take on it. I mean, after adding so many other things to the serial, it seems rather incomplete to leave this out.
Going back to the authenticity issue, I can think of another more radical approach: gather a group of academics (historians, anthropologists, etc) and attempt to reconstruct the original events that inspired all these legends, including the Valmiki version, stripping all supernatural/fantastical elements from the story. This would be more of a docudrama than a drama serial like the one we are watching right now. This kind of a show would be an ideal companion piece to my dream of an anthology program dealing with the different versions of the epic (I talked about that in another thread). However, I think that would be highly controversial and not very likely to be ever attempted. 😔
