Darjeeling pledges firm commitment for Baichung's Jhalak Dikhla
Gangtok | Thursday, May 7 2009 IST

Darjeeling has vowed to repay the Prashant Tamang debt owed to Sikkim by supporting wholeheartedly Baichung Bhutia who is on the threshold of entering the finals of the popular reality show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, being telecasted by a private entertainment channel.

The support pledge, a strong reminder of the brotherhood ties between Sikkim and Darjeeling, came today from elected representatives, former footballers and people from different walks of life.

'' Sikkim and Darjeeling have inseparable ties. Today we have come to the same stage when we all had worked together for the victory of Prashant Tamang in the Indian Idol contest. Now we have to ensure the victory of the famous son of Sikkim.I appeal all the Darjeeling people to sent SMS votes as much as they can for the victory of Baichung Bhutia,'' said Darjeeling Municipality chairman Pemba Tshering. He was addressing a campaign programme yesterday at a local hotel in Darjeeling that had been jointly convened by Baichung supporters and well-wishers from both sides of the Teesta river.

Mr Tshering assured to the home state of India soccer captain that people from Darjeeling will give the same commitment to Baichung like they have been giving for the Gorkhaland cause.

Former footballer Passang Lama Mama reminded that Darjeeling owed a huge debt to Sikkim on the Prashant Tamang success story.

''Now time has come to square the debt and we must not let go off this opportunity,'' he said. '' Let us all make Baichung the winner of the Jhalak Dikhla Jaa contest, he added.

Other distinguished personalities and former footballers of Darjeeling also expressed their support and appealed all to vote for Baichung and join the promotion-cum-support campaign which has been spearheaded by former minister Thukchuk Lachungpa in Sikkim.

It was due to the initiative of Mr. Lachungpa, who is also the chairman of Sikkim Citizen Forum that the Baichung promotion bandwagon entered to Darjeeling today and fetched a warm response thanks to a well-entrenched supporter base of the Indian football team captain.

'' Today the light for a widespread support for Baichung has been lit,'' said Lachungpa reminding the people of both Sikkim and Darjeeling to show unity and respect the old brotherhood ties. The message of unity had been sent to all during Prashant Tamang campaign and once more, '' we have to send a similar message to the world by voting Baichung to victory in the Jhalak Dikhla Jaa contest,'' said Lachungpa. Former East Bengal footballer and close friend of Baichung, Sherap Lepcha said that Baichung needed support as he is poised to enter the final round of the reality show contest.

Baichungs home club, United Sikkim Sporting Club (USSC) also appealed the Darjeeling people to vote for Baichung.

Guys believe it or not but these North-East Indians played a very very important role in giving us a True Winner. They made sure that the deserving participant like Baichung dont leave the stage due to lack of votes and they stood strong to give him back up, as a result today Baichung is standing with Jhalak trophy in his hand with HIGHEST number of votes and HIGHEST scores, making his fans and everyone else feel proud of him 😳

Lets pay a standing ovation to these north-east indians who showed so much determination, dedication and devotion and gave their day and night voting and supporting Baichung. We are proud of you guys and the unity you guys have shown
👏

Thanks to everyone else who showed their constant support towards Baichung!

I'm sorry but even if BB wasn't deserving and was the worst dancer on the show, i'm ready to place a bet they would still vote like crazy.
It's really unfair cos they have given us singers like Prashant Tamang who is gone completely gayab after the day he won.
They have unity but majority of them will only ever vote for North East Indians, rarely anyone else. I'm from Mumbai but I wouldn't hesititate for one second to vote for HK.
I'm sorry but I think they got lucky that this time someone from their region happened to be a pretty good dancer.
We shouldn't be applauding north east unity, south unity, west unity etc, we should only support Indian Unity!!

I'm happy tat they are united y wont anyone be happy if states of india r getting united tats vry dumb thing to say. They joined hands and voted for baichung and I'm thankful to them for this. Its only cuz of them that we got the winner who was most deserving.

I didn't say BB isn't deserving did i?😕
But it is the same region that made prashant tamang the winner who was an absolutely useless singer IMO and hasn't released a single album. (or the shops just don't sell them lol) u really think he deserved to win against amit paul?
I said whats the point of north east being united or west india being united? We should show our Indian unity before showing unity within punjabi community/marathi community/north east community etc. Yeah they joined hands to vote for a deserving dance but i;m sure even if he wasn't deserving the same would've happened like it does in all reality tv shows.
No offence to people of the NE, I know they're genuinely great people but when it comes to reality tv shows argh the voting system annoys the hell outta mee!

i dont get it so they voted on the basis of repaying a debt becuase an indian idol contestant won cos of that state!! :-SS
what confuse me is you guys always bash us for voting for our favs blindly ans sya we dont take anything into consideration
AND have sed bb fans vote for whos deserving and actually look at dance
and your applauding them when the reason they voted isnt anything close to bbs dancing and you know it
its cos they wanted to repay a debt because they felt it was state obligation

see they didn't vote from the dance one, they united and supported when they realise that BB is in the semi's so i don't think anything wrong in their part in supporting him and out of 4 people in the semi, he deserve to be in the final, and winner of the final too.. if you compare the judges marks with karan and Gauhar, he scored more, so 50% is depending on the votes, so why not support him with votes.. it is not unreasonable at all since JDJ is concerned.. at least they made the indian football captain, a padmashri holder to win.. as he deserve to win..
