Darjeeling has vowed to repay the Prashant Tamang debt owed to Sikkim by supporting wholeheartedly Baichung Bhutia who is on the threshold of entering the finals of the popular reality show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, being telecasted by a private entertainment channel.
The support pledge, a strong reminder of the brotherhood ties between Sikkim and Darjeeling, came today from elected representatives, former footballers and people from different walks of life.
'' Sikkim and Darjeeling have inseparable ties. Today we have come to the same stage when we all had worked together for the victory of Prashant Tamang in the Indian Idol contest. Now we have to ensure the victory of the famous son of Sikkim.I appeal all the Darjeeling people to sent SMS votes as much as they can for the victory of Baichung Bhutia,'' said Darjeeling Municipality chairman Pemba Tshering. He was addressing a campaign programme yesterday at a local hotel in Darjeeling that had been jointly convened by Baichung supporters and well-wishers from both sides of the Teesta river.
Mr Tshering assured to the home state of India soccer captain that people from Darjeeling will give the same commitment to Baichung like they have been giving for the Gorkhaland cause.
Former footballer Passang Lama Mama reminded that Darjeeling owed a huge debt to Sikkim on the Prashant Tamang success story.
''Now time has come to square the debt and we must not let go off this opportunity,'' he said. '' Let us all make Baichung the winner of the Jhalak Dikhla Jaa contest, he added.
Other distinguished personalities and former footballers of Darjeeling also expressed their support and appealed all to vote for Baichung and join the promotion-cum-support campaign which has been spearheaded by former minister Thukchuk Lachungpa in Sikkim.
It was due to the initiative of Mr. Lachungpa, who is also the chairman of Sikkim Citizen Forum that the Baichung promotion bandwagon entered to Darjeeling today and fetched a warm response thanks to a well-entrenched supporter base of the Indian football team captain.
'' Today the light for a widespread support for Baichung has been lit,'' said Lachungpa reminding the people of both Sikkim and Darjeeling to show unity and respect the old brotherhood ties. The message of unity had been sent to all during Prashant Tamang campaign and once more, '' we have to send a similar message to the world by voting Baichung to victory in the Jhalak Dikhla Jaa contest,'' said Lachungpa. Former East Bengal footballer and close friend of Baichung, Sherap Lepcha said that Baichung needed support as he is poised to enter the final round of the reality show contest.
Baichungs home club, United Sikkim Sporting Club (USSC) also appealed the Darjeeling people to vote for Baichung.

Guys believe it or not but these North-East Indians played a very very important role in giving us a True Winner. They made sure that the deserving participant like Baichung dont leave the stage due to lack of votes and they stood strong to give him back up, as a result today Baichung is standing with Jhalak trophy in his hand with HIGHEST number of votes and HIGHEST scores, making his fans and everyone else feel proud of him 😳
Lets pay a standing ovation to these north-east indians who showed so much determination, dedication and devotion and gave their day and night voting and supporting Baichung. We are proud of you guys and the unity you guys have shown 👏
