The story is set in Amrauli (central India) in a very powerful & political Saniyal family. With the birth of a baby, the heir apparent to take forward the saniyal tradition. The story begins one omnious night, the stars are aligned a certain way – as the devil worshippers get together; they set up a secret sect somewhere in the heart of forest. The sect includes ghosts, ghouls, witches and humans. A black dog is key to this sect as its presence is met with serious respect.
There is another secret sect – this one in a bright and holy looking ghat like place, where Panini the holy scholar, reads out from the scriptures that the fateful night has come, and they can't do much to avoid it... but they'll fight it. Basically the night and the birth is set up at both ends. It's a night written long back, a birth that heralds doom for the world! And on this night the prophecy begins!
Deep in the forest a beautiful evil looking woman consummate and a boy child is born. The sect celebrates the birth. Just then there is an attack on the gathering (the holy sect attacks) and the newly born kid is entrusted to the black dog, to be taken to its rightful safe place.
On the same night, the Saniyal family awaits the birth of their second child. An anxious Varishth Saniyal. The father to be is a successful politician. Suddenly a baby girl takes birth. It's revealed that there is an evil mark on the doctor and he swaps this girl child with the evil boy. And the son of the devil lands in the lap of luxury and political supremacy, while the little girl Uttara grows up in contrasting means and is brought up by the local school teacher.
Viraat grows up to be an angry child, he feels no physical pain, his emotions are cold. A member of the secret sect Jwalika comes into the saniyal family as Viraat's daimaa. Also the black dog develops a relation with Virat and much against the wishes of the mother, Mridula, Viraat grows to enjoy their company most.
Viraat is numb to the killings he sees in front of him. Paninis disciples who try to kill or harm him are killed mercilessly and Viraat doesn't react, not even knowing that he's the one responsible for it. It's a while before kid Viraat will realize and accept the great evil he is born for.
Viraat only has an emotional bond with his elder sister Veena. As kids, Uttara and Viraat's paths also cross, she is the the only person who seems to evoke the human feelings in him. Viraat's father Varishth Saniyal notices that all is not ok with his son, and Paninis disciples successfully plant the seed of doubt in Varishth's mind.
With Panini and his followers insistence, Varishth ultimately finds out the truth about Viraat. Grief struck and shocked Varishth is entrusted with the task of killing off Viraat before he grows up to be the all powerful evil. But in a moment of weakness, overcome with emotion, Varishth fails and instead Viraat kills his father.
Thinking it's the opposition thats responsible for the killing of the father, the political guru of the family, Tripathiji, decides to send away Viraat. 13-years-later Viraat returns from the foreign. 13 years of foreign life jades many memories for Viraat, he returns unsure of himself and has many powers. Will he come to know who he is, and what he is born for?
