MUMBAI: Akshay Kumar's wife, Twinkle Khanna, was arrested by the Vakola police and released on a cash bail of Rs 950 late on Wednesday for allegedly obscene behaviour at the Lakme Fashion Showheld at a Santa Cruz hotel a few days back.
Police officers said Twinkle was accompanied by lawyer Bhairav Choudhary when she surrendered. A huge crowd gathered outside the police station and it stayed for the couple of hours she spent at the Vakola police station. Twinkle told cops that Akshay would be coming back to Mumbai by the end of this week and then complete the legal formalities.
Assistant commissioner of police (Vakola division) Arvind Mahabdi said: ''It was a bailable offence and we released her on a bail of Rs 950 at the police station itself. We are now waiting for Akshay.'' A person, claiming to be a social worker, had alleged that husband and wife had behaved in an obscene and vulgar manner and action should be initiated against them.
Police officers, however, said they might not pursue the case as it was very ''weak in law''.
''Akshay's trouser was supposed to be unbuttoned by some other woman on the ramp but Akshay went to wife Twinkle,'' an officer said.
It is not the first time that actors have been held for obscenity and paid a bail of Rs 950 to get themselves free. Madhu Sapre and
Milind Soman were held for obscenity in a sports shoe commercial. The actors are still fighting the case. Pooja Bhatt was held and released on bail in a case involving a poster of her film, Rog. A Madurai lawyer moved a local court against Shilpa Shetty and Reema Sen for semi-nude
posters. Mallika Sherawat, too, was dragged to court by a ''social worker'' for obscenity at a new year's event in the city.
