Neil Postman once said, "Our citizens believe in two contradictory reasons for schooling. One is that schools must teach the young to accept the world as it is, with all of their culture's rules, requirements, constraints, and even prejudices. The other is that the young should be taught to be critical thinkers, so that they become men and women of independent mind, distanced from the conventional wisdom of their own time and with strength and skill enough to change what is wrong."

Which reason do you think is better?

Or do you think it's the combination of both that leads to a fulfilling educational experience?

Please do discuss any particular strategies that you think the teachers should employ for make it a better educational experience for students.

It's definitely the latter. Yes, there are some situations where you have to accept the "world" as it is without questioning it, but why were we given the ability to think for ourselves if all we had to do was conform and jump on the bandwagon, following what everyone else is doing?

In this world, not everything is a written fact. There are theories and there are opinions. Schools should be institutions that teach us those facts and guide us in interpreting them, but at the same time allowing us to have our own opinions, allowing us to question.

It should be a place were students feel @ home. The place were learning should be in both the ways mentally & physically.skills & abilitys of a child should comeout . Opinions of students shouldn't be neglected or even students shouldn't be underestimated. Both students as well as teachers should understand each other.A teacher should treat each student with due respect as per his/her behaviour.

In my opinion, students should be taught to be independent thinkers.their imagination should fly, discover their own self. The rules of the society were also formulated by some independent thinkers. So why is it wrong to formulate our own rules.when the mind is free to think then only new ideas would take birth and will just refresh the society.

Of coz schools must teach the young about how the world is but no1 should to be told to accept things how they are and live/deal with it.. yes, the young should be thought what is right and what is wrong.. at the same time they should be thought to follow what they believe in and not what has be passed on or told by others ..

every1 should be entitled to their own opinions .. at the end of the day we are all individuals and as we grow so does our understanding of life .. we all come from different societies and cultural back grounds .. and we learn abt life not just from school but also from home, what we see around us and from what we experience

I reckon that schools should teach kids the facts of life but should not impose that they follow this or follow that .. let them be the judge themselves 😊

Reason for schooling ?
The realistic answer is - " To modify one's thinking power ( or the intristic intellect ) to a straight and closed path constructed by the society & the board that the school is affiliated to "
This is what schools today do to students.
In the ideal world, I wish the schools followed the latter of the two reasons stated by you. One should have the ability to look at everything analytically, with questioning eyes, instead of simply accepting it because some authoritative figure told you to do so.

I think the schools should definitely help make students critical thinkers so they are able to solve problems of the world. We might say that it's a bit cliched to say that one person can make a difference, but it's true. I remember this quote by someone that went like "Never doubt in the ability of a few responsible citizens to change the world. In fact they are the ones who ever have!" Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in what they were doing and they did change things for so many in the world! They followed the path that they thought was right and were willing to do anything for it!

It's easy to say that things are going to stay as they always have been, but history tells us that few people have made the difference because they had the courage and audacity to be different and hold on to their views. If the schools teach us to do that, then we would have more people who would stick to their goals and the world could be a better place!

I've been lucky to have had a couple teachers who followed this path. They would challenge our conventional beliefs so we start questioning ourselves and perhaps this way they hoped we will attain critical thinking and be better citizens and human beings!

One quality gets highlighted on completion of school that gets carried on to the job: commitment.
