Part 57:

Cut to: Mayank ' At home
He is feeling much better this morning, especially after the phone call to Nupur. The fever has subsided and he is restless about not being allowed to go to college. He is walking around the room, talking to himself.

Mayank: aaj toh college na jaane ki koi wajah hi nahi thi! Ma bhi na.. bukhaar kya mujhe uda ke le jayega?

He starts scowling but the scowl transforms into a smile in a split second.

Mayank: woh toh acha hua Nupur ko notes banana ko keh diya. I hope wo theek se bana le. Nahi toh din ke saath saath sham bhi barbaad ho jaayegi.

He suddenly thinks of Miss Aha's wedding, when Nupur had been insecure about him leaving her alone.
"Chodo, tumse toh baat karna hi bekaar hai. Ghar jaao, notes banayo. Chodo mera rona dhona, ek din mujhe bhi chod dena.."

Mayank: kahi Nupur aisa toh nahi samjhegi ke main usse sirf notes ke liye milna chah raha hu? Is ladki ka koi bharosa toh hai nahi.. ek kaam karta hu, use beach par le jaata hoon! Pehli baar hum wohi saath gaye the.. (thumping himself on the shoulder) arey wah dude, tu toh bada romantic ho gaya hai! Dekha Nupur, you should be proud of me!

His Mom is just outside, dusting the living room, and she hears him murmuring to himself.

Mom: kya badbada raha hai Mayu? Kahi phir se bukhaar toh nahi aaya na?

At her voice, Mayank jumps onto another train of thought.

Mayank: arey par Ma ko kya kahunga? Abhi bol deta hu ke Nupur se notes lene beach pe jaana hai. Warna wo phir jasoosi shuru kar degi.

He goes outside and hugs her from behind, with a big smile.

Mayank: (in a sugar coated tone) meri pyari ma! Kya kar rahi ho?

His Mom glances at the cushion covers on the sofa with a stern expression.

Mom: main soch rahi thi ke aaj in covers ki dhool ko dho hi daalti hoon. Bade ziddi ho gaye hai, teri tarah!
Mayank: (raising an eyebrow) meri tarah? Maine kya kiya?
Mom: acha jee! Subah subah uthke college ke liye kaun tayyar ho raha tha?
Mayank: haan toh bukhaar nahi hai na aaj. College me lectures hai ma.. aisa toh hai nahi ke mere na aane se class hi nahi hogi.
Mom: haan toh aisa bhi nahi hai ke tere ek din na jaane se pura course wo aaj hi khatam kara denge.
Mayank: (sighs) tumse main kabhi jeet sakta hu?
Mom: (twitching his nose) haan! (laughing) Sapno me!

Mayank smiles and still stands there, debating what exactly to tell her. She notices his unease.

Mom: kya hua Mayu? (grinning) kuch baat karni hai?
Mayank: haan. Nahi, bilkul nahi. Mera matlab hai '
Mom: kya matlab hai?
Mayank takes a deep breath and then rambles on at full speed.
Mayank: aaj sham ko main beach pe ja raha hu, Nupur se notes lene hai, phir mat bolna maine bataya nahi.
Mom: beach pe? Tu thik toh hai na Mayu? College na jaane ke liye tujhe mana liya aur ghumne phirne jaane ko tayyar hai? Mera beta normal kabse ho gaya?
Mayank: please Ma, main normal hi hu. Aur main ghumne nahi ja raha. Nupur se notes discuss karne ja raha hu.
Mom: (with exaggerated seriousness) oh!
Mayank: jee haan! Wo.. maine socha ke maharani ka zara dil behal jayega toh shayad dimaag pe zyada zor de paaye.

His Mom continues to stare at him. He glances at her on and off and then looks sideways.

Mayank: kya, aise kyun dekh rahi ho?
Mom: (nodding her head from side to side) dekh rahi hoon ke mere bete ko Mumbai ki beach se pyar hai, notes se pyar hai ya notes dene wale se?
Mayank: (smiling indulgently) teeno se.
Mom: (trying very hard to hide a giggle) hai na?
Its too late for Mayank to deny his slip of tongue and he decides to make an escape.
Mayank: uh.. main paani peeke aata hu, aap kitna bolte ho!

Cut to: Samrat ' Classroom
Shukla is taking extra classes today and has been going on for a while. Benji, who is sitting with Samrat, is fed up ' both of Shukla and the undivided attention Samrat is giving to the lecture. He pinches him hard on the shoulder.

Samrat: (rubbing his shoulder) kya kar raha hai dude? Lagti hai!
Benji: haan toh mujhe bhi lagti hai! (putting a hand on his mind) Yaha! Dimaag ki dahi bana di is Shukla ne! Main aur ek second is class me nahi baith sakta, tujhe chalna hai toh bol.
Samrat: shh, chup kar.
He points to Gunjan in the seat in front of them, diligently making notes.
Samrat: chashmish ko dekh aur kuch seekh. Thode bahut paap dho le apne Benji.
Benji: tu aur teri chashmish! Sandwich ki tarah pis toh main raha hu!
He makes a face and turns to the other side even as Samrat chuckles and continues to listen to the lecture.

Cut to: Nupur ' Classroom
Principal Saxena is taking a guest lecture for her class that day and his is the straight third class since morning. But inspite of her colourful expressions denoting irritation, restlessness and fatigue, she hasn't budged an inch from her seat. Her notebooks continue to be filled with systematic notes, probably the best she has ever made. CJ, who is sitting with her, pores over her shoulder and whistles lightly.

CJ: kya baat hai Nupur, Excel me koi best notes submission contest hai kya?
Nupur: (flustered) nahin toh, hai kya?
CJ: tumhare notes dekhkar lag raha hai.. subah se Shukla, Devdhar, Saxena ki har baat tumne likh daali hogi..aur woh bhi kis style me!
Nupur looks at her notes doubtfully and then back at CJ.
Nupur: sach batao, thik se nahi likhe kya? Agar tum hoti toh in notes se khush toh hoti na?
CJ: thik se likhe hai? Aisa lag raha hai moti jade ho.. koi bhi impress hoga.. par tum kise impress karne ke liye extra effort daal rahi ho? (winks)
Nupur: arey wohi tumhara dost Mayank. Ab bimaar hue hai janaab toh mehnat toh mujhe hi karni padegi na!
CJ: (laughing) Mayank ka scene sahi hai. Notes ke bahaane multitasking bhi ho jaayegi.
Nupur: matlab? (Sees Saxena drawing a bar chart on the board) kya CJ, tumhari bakbak se agar kuch bhi miss ho gaya na toh jhaad sun ne tumhe hi bhejungi. Phir mat aana mere paas.
She gets busy with her notebook again as CJ shakes her head.
CJ: lagey raho, lagey raho! Yeh Mayank kabhi nahi badlega, haan apne aas paas ke logo ko zarur badal dega.

Cut to: Dia ' Canteen
She is sulking in the canteen, having heard about the movie plans from Uday and Vatsala. Chacko and Annie are trying to provide some solace.

Annie: let it be na Dia babes. Tum hi toh keh rahi thi ke tumhe Samrat aur Gunjan me interest nahi lena.
Dia: forget Gunjan, Annie. Sammy toh mera best friend tha. Aaj mujhse baat bhi nahi karta. And I don't agree ki yeh sirf Gunjan ke influence ka asar hai.
Chacko: haan Dia, ho sakta hai tumhari bhi galti ho?

Dia looks at him for a split second and then gets up to go the counter.

Annie: kya zarurat thi yeh kehne ki duffer!
Chacko: sorry Annie. Ab kya karen?

Dia: (to Chinu, the canteen guy) ek cold coffee please.
Chinu: sorry, woh toh nahi hai.
Dia: (angrily) kabhi kuch hota hai yaha? Tum caf band kyun nahi kar dete?

Her hand strikes a few glasses that were on the counter top. They drop to the ground, making Abhay, who was standing behind her, jump out of his skin.

Abhay: jaha hoti ho kuch chaos machati ho. Tumse toh dur hi rehna chahiye.
Dia has always disliked him, especially after their previous meeting.
Dia: toh dur raho, for God sake, tumhare paas kaun rehna chahta hai?
She walks past him in a fury, her hair striking his cheeks.
Abhay: (to Chinu, with a smile) chalo bala toh tali, kyun?

Cut to: PVR Andheri ' Radz
She has arrived in time for the movie but the others are nowehere in sight. As she waits for them to join her, her eyes fall on Aditya. She walks upto him to say hello and happens to overhear him talking on the phone.

Adi: but this is not done yar.. you had promised to come! (takes a deep breath) chal koi nahi, maybe some other time.. nahi, I am not offended.. I SAID I am not. Ok bye.

He keeps the phone back in his pocket with a rather irritated expression. Radz comes up from behind and screams into his ear. He jumps.

Adi: oh God Radz! You scared me. Tum yaha kya kar rahi ho?
Radz: seriously Adi, tum jab bhi milte ho mujhse yahi sawaal kyun puchte ho?
Adi: (grinning) sorry baba.. movie dekhne aayi ho? (looking around) akele?
Radz: (sighs) plan toh Samrat aur gang ke saath ka tha par unki meharbaani ab tak mujhpar barsi nahi.. aane wale honge snail speed me.

Just then, Samrat comes up behind her, which Adi notices but on Samrat's gesture, keeps quiet. Radz is stunned as his hands cover her eyes.

Radz: kaun hai? Adi, kaun hai?
Adi doesnt respond and everyone else joins in the fun.
Radz: arey Adi batao na kaun hai.. kaha gaye tum?
Uday: (in a thick baritone voice) ha ha ha! Main kaal hu! Mahakaal!
Radz: Uday!
As Samrat's grip becomes a bit lighter, Radz frees herself and giggles.
Radz: sorry Sam, yeh Uday ki awaz is a dead giveaway, kitna bhi Amitabh Bachan banne ki koshish kare.. (To Adi) tum bhi Sam ke chakkar me aa gaye? Bata nahi sakte the?
Samrat: maine mana kiya tha Radz, chal ab gussa toh nahi hai na meri behan? Agar hai toh mere paas kuch aur plans -
Radz: (folding her hands in prayer) nahi mujhe maaf keejeye bhaiya jee, apke plans apko mubarak, kyun Gunjan?
Gunjan: (smiles) actually hum meri wajah se late hue, mujhe Devdhar Sir se kuch baat karni thi.
Adi: acha guys, enjoy your movie.. main chalta hoon.
Samrat: arey tum kaha ja rahe ho? Mujhe laga tum Radz ke saath ho?
Adi: nahi dude, kisi ka wait kar raha tha, woh toh aayi nahi, toh ab chalta hoon.

Radz winks at Samrat and puts up a melodramatic tone.

Radz: haan, Pragya kya nahi aayi duniya khatam ho gayi. Hamare saath toh ek minute bitana bhi paap hai.. chal na Sam, hum andar chalte hai.. inhe inke haal par chod dete hai.
Adi: arey par Radz, mera wo matlab nahi tha!
Radz: (quickly) toh tum hamare saath aa rahe ho na?
Benji: aa rahe ho na?
Vatsala: aa rahe ho na?

As Adi sees Uday and Samrat gear up for the same question, he puts up both hands to indicate a stop signal and smiles.

Adi: ab itna insist kar rahe ho toh.. aana hi padega!
Samrat: (grinning) great! Toh ab chale? Theatre wale mere rishtedaar nahi hai.

Everyone walks inside the theatre, Gunjan walking behind Radz and Uday. Samrat pulls her to him.

Samrat: tum unke peeche kyun chal rahi ho chashmish?
Gunjan: (a bit taken aback) unke peeche matlab? Main toh.. andar ja rahi thi.
Samrat: par tum baithogi toh mere saath na?
Gunjan: (blushing) thik hai.
Samrat smiles and they both walk in side by side.

Cut to: Nupur - In an auto
Gunjan hadn't been home when Nupur had returned from college as she had gone straight for the movie. Ordinarily Nupur would have been upset about missing the movie but now, nothing seemed complete without Mayank being there. So she had quickly freshened up, ensured she had the notes with her, and left for Mayank's home. As she his home draws nearer, she asks the autowala to stop.

Nupur: bas bhaiya, yahi rok deejeye. Kitna hua?
Autowala: 40 rupaye madam.
Nupur: (shocked) hain? Kal hi toh aayi thi main 30 rupaye me! Ek raat me rates bad gaye? India ki population hai kya?
Autowala: arey madam, hum apko galat kyun batayenge.
Nupur: kyun ka kya jawaab hai? (looking through her purse) mere paas chutte bhi nahi hai.. apke paas hai 50 ka change?
Autowala: nahi jee. Hamare paas toh nahi hai.
Nupur: subah se sham ho gayi hai, 50 ke khulle nahi hai? Itna jhuth bologe toh paap lagega bhaiya! Ab rukiye aap, main change leke aati hu.

As she turns to go inside and ask Mayank for change, she is surprised to see him standing in front of her.

Nupur: Mayank! Tum yaha kyun khade ho? (winks) mere intezaar me? Oh sorry, I mean notes ke intezaar me?
Mayank: actually, auto wale ke intezaar me.
Nupur: (wide eyed) kya? Kyun?
Mayank: wo kya hai Nupur, ke abhi abhi bukhaar kam hua hai toh beach tak chalke jaana thoda..
Nupur: beach tak? Waha kyun jaana hai?
Mayank: (thoughtfully) mera mann kar raha hai, isliye.
Nupur: (shaking her head) tum bilkul pagal ho.. phir kabhi jaayenge Mayank, abhi tumhari tabiyat -
Mayank: meri tabiyat bilkul thik hai. Aur din bhar ghar pe baithkar pak gaya hu main!
Autowala: madam aap paise de rahi hai ya phir kal dengi?
Nupur makes a face at him and clenches her fists.
Nupur: ruk ja, tere paise toh main -
Mayank pushes her behind just in time.
Mayank: uh, bhaiya, aap hume Juhu beach tak chod deejeye. Phir paise wohi le lena.
Autowala: jee Sir.. baithiye.

After they sit inside, the auto starts moving. Nupur's attention is instantly diverted from scowling at the autowala to looking questioningly at Mayank.

Nupur: tumne aunty ko bataya ya ghar se bhag ke aa rahe ho?
Mayank: bataya hai. Mujhe tumhari tarah JWM khelne ki aadat nahi hai Nupur.
Nupur: JWM?
Mayank: jab we met.
Nupur: (covering her face with her hands) byyy Godd Mayank! Tumne JWM dekhi hai? Please mujhe pinch karo, kahi yeh sapna toh nahi?

Mayank leans in a little closer and pinches her lightly on the shoulder. Nupur draws away and looks at him indignantly even as he starts laughing.
