India, the world's largest democracy, is perhaps the only place where one sees so many film stars in the political arena. We bring you Bollywood's star brigade who have succeeded, and those who are still trying, in the world of politics.

Stars in Politics : Shatrughan Sinha

WHILE he was at the peak of his acting career in the mid-1980s, Shatrughan Sinha chose to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. Now, Sinha is considered one of the most successful actor-turned-politicians of India, having made history by being the first member of the film fraternity to become a cabinet minister with the Government of India. He has held two portfolios, the department of health and the department of shipping. He is still a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, campaigning for the party all over India, and is well known as a leader of the masses and a brilliant orator. As of May 2006, he has been appointed as the head of the BJP's Culture and Arts Department.

Stars in Politics : Ravi Kissen

Ravi Kissen, the Bhojpuri Bigg Boss star, is keen to win a congress ticket. And if he does not get to contest, he will campaign for the party.

Stars in Politics : Naghma

Naghma, who has done both Hindi and South Indian films, will most likely join the Congress party. She will contest from either the Mumbai suburbs or Uttar Pradesh.

Stars in Politics : Sanjay Dutt

Son of the legendry actor Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt, Sanjay Dutt is all set to contest the polls on a Samajwadi Party ticket from Lucknow.

Stars in Politics : Govinda

Govinda joined the Congress party in 2004 and was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower House of Parliament from Mumbai, with an overwhelming majority. He defeated the 5-time sitting MP by over 50000 votes. Yet, he might not get the chance to contest this year.

Stars in Politics : Raj Babbar

Raj Babbar joined the Samajwadi Party and became the country's Member of Parliament three times in a row since 1994, from his native constituency of Agra. Following the open criticism of Amar Singh, Raj Babbar was suspended from the party in 2008. He later joined Congress and will be contesting from Fatehpur Sikri in Uttar Pradesh, this year.

Stars in Politics : Vinod Khanna

Vinod Khanna joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1997 and was nominated from Gurdaspur, Punjab in the next year's Lok Sabha poll. He latter became union minister for culture and tourism in July 2002. Six months later, he was moved to the more important Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as Minister of State. In 2004, he was reelected from Gurdaspur.

Stars in Politics : Jaya Prada

Jaya Prada is associated with the Samajwadi Party and contested from the Rampur parliamentary constituency in UP during the last general elections in 2004. She might contest this year too.

Stars in Politics : Jaya Bachchan

Jaya Bachchan has become active in politics of late, notably with the Samajwadi Party. She has been a Member of Parliament, representing Rajya Sabha. Bachchan returned to the Upper House as MP of Samajwadi Party in July 2006.

Stars in Politics : Hema Malini

Hema Malini was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India, with the support of the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party). In February 2004, she joined the party officially. She is likely to contest from the Baramati constituency in Pune, Maharashtra.

Stars in Politics : Dharmendra

Dharmendra was elected as a Member of Parliament in the 2004 general elections, from Bikaner in Rajasthan, on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket.
