Box-Office disaster's that become Cult Films

A point for discussion...

There seem to be quite a few films that initially were unsuccessful, commercial disaster's at the box office when they first released, but later become 'cult' films with a large fan following. And so eventually everyone forgets the box office figures and the film is seen as a classic/hit.

I think it will be interesting to comply some sort of list of these 'cult classic's', to see why they were rejected initially, and what it is about them that later made them what they today.

For example:

Kaagaz Ke Phool -
Released in 1959, starring Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman, was a huge disaster at the box office due to it being too complex for the audience at that particular time. People hated it so much, that apparently they threw stones at the screen! However, nowadays it is considered one of Guru Dutt's best works, and is loved by most.

Have you seen the film? If so did you love it or hate it?

Feel free to discuss this film and others!

I loved Kaagaz ke phool. Its a poigant tale of tragic love. Its a true matsre-pice & shows why Guru Dutt is still regarded the best director in India after Satyajit Roy & Shantaram.

The other cult movie whic flopped when it was released is Anda Apna Apna.

We can also add Shyam Benegal's Kalyug, Anurag Kashyap's Paanch to the list.

kaagaz ke phool is definitely a classic example. I can't believe it was initially rejected by the audience.
Same goes for Lamhe, one of my favourite films. The film did well overseas, but failed in India. Now it's considered a classic. I guess it was ahead of its time. But I would hail it is Yash Chopra's best.

Oh yes Andaz Apna Apna has a huge amount of fans. From what i remember it wasn't a big disaster at the box office, but over the years it has been more successful.

Your right, she died 3 weeks after it's release, and now it is considered one of her best roles, even though it didn't open to well. Shame she didn't see the impact it made.

I agree with you. Lamhe is perhaps Yash Chopra's best made film with excellent music, story and actors. I think it was probably rejected by the Indian audience due to the age gap romance of the characters. Shocking for Indian society lol
