When Lord Narayana himself decides to take birth as a human being, it is hardly surprising that the great sages and seers played an important role during each facet of his life.
Their tap-bal and yoga siddhi was so great that the Lord -who Himself was the sustainer of the thre worlds-allows himself to take their help and blesings. Rather, it would have been a high point in the rishis life to offer asistance to the GOD whom they had constantly meditated upon.
First Rishi Rishyashringa who conducted the Putra Kameshthi Yagya, which resulted in Narayana's descent in the world.
Second Rishi Vashishta, the kul guru of the Raghu Dynasty
who was instrumental in formatting the early years of Prince Rama and his brothers. It was only appropriate, -that the young prince who would go on to face the greatest challenges of all time (both physical and mental) - should receive wisdom and education from one of the saptarishis Himself.
IN fact Under Vashistha's guidance Rama developed detachment and a strong sense of duty very early in life and this prompted Vashishta to impart the highest philophy known to Man, and this knowledge is now known as 'Yoga Vashishta'. Thanks to Vashishta's strong grounding in Morality, Rama was able to discharge his moral duties unflinchingly, no matter what his personal pain might be.
One should not also forget that Bharat, Lakshman and Shatrughan were also shaped by this Seer displayed high Ethical Standards
Third Rishi Vishwamitra, the Sage who once was once a king himself.
Vishwamitra having been a kshatriya himself once knew the necessity for procuring Divine Weapons, and being a sage knew the recquired yagna, matras, etc to obtain them. It was these divine weapons that Lord RAm used in his batle with Ravan and other demons. The all important Brahma Astra was also given by Vishwamitra to Ram.
Fourth Rishi Atri, the husband of Anusuya
Here it is the wife of the rishi, Anusuya who comes to prominence. Not only does she lecture Sita on the duties of a wife, she also gifts her invaluable jewels to Sita- jewels which would never loose their shine She also blesses Sita that her radiant complextion and lustre would never fade (meaning that Sita would be a nitya sumangali). It was these jewles that Sita scattered on the ground while bing kidnapped by Ravan.
Fifth RIshi Agastya -the sage born out of a pitcher
Agastya taught Rama the 'Aditya Hridayam'- a stotra in praise of the Sun God which when chanted with sincerity, makes the person victorios. Rama recited this just before killing Ravan
Finally Rishi Valmiki - the sage who emerged out of an anthill
Not only did he compose the epic (he called it Paulastya Vadha- not ramayan), he also ensured the the heirs to the throne of Raghuvansh (Luv-Kush) were reared appropriately, in a good mix of Kshatriya valor and Spiritual power.
The best part is -how unfailingly Ram falls at the feet of these rishis and humbly seeks their blessings.
He is Narayana Incaranate yet he treats these rishis as his preceptors. Truly, these sages,- given that they never sought anything for themselves, and worked for the welfare of the world- deserved nothing less.
Hope you all found this post interesting.
