Hi guys, this is the first chapter of my Time-travel fanfic of which Hermione is the main protagonist. Please review!

Summary: Hermione goes back in time and lands up in 1977. There, however much she mingles up with the others, she remains an Outsider, with a terrible little secret of her very own.

&nbs p; The Time-Travel

Hermione blinked in the darkness as her eyes tried to adjust to it. The light emanating from the three wands was highly insufficient and did nothing to dispel a gnawing fear. Yet, the fear was not due to their surroundings, which were horrible in their own right. No, all their thoughts and fears were due to the tiny object in Harry Potter's hand. It was a minute pendant, curiously shaped like an eagle, and attached to its silver chain.

"What do you reckon it is, Harry?" asked a groggy Ron Weasley. He had still not completely recovered from the curse which had rendered him unconscious for a full hour (during which time, his two best friends were in despair) until Hermione had awakened him with a variety of spells. Harry did not answer but continued staring at it; his eyes narrowed. Hermione bit her lip anxiously.

"I dunno, but, why a locket again? I'd have thought that Voldemort would have something more unique," Harry said. As Hermione watched her two friends discuss; she couldn't help but be drawn by the little object. Almost involuntarily, she reached out and took the thing from Harry's hand and held it up till it was level with her eyes. Ron looked at her briefly but then he ignored her. Both of them had now seated themselves and were taking out some of the food that they had stolen from The Burrow when they had run away a good two months back. It was lucky that they were magical and could cast the Refilling Charm on the food, which otherwise might not have lasted for more than a fortnight.

Hermione was about ten feet away from them when she touched the eagle's eye just out of curiosity. At once, the world around her started to spin and three voices cried out, one in pain and two in shock. Harry and Ron raced towards her, but even as they reached the spot where she had been standing, Hermione completely vanished from there.

&nbs p; & ;nbs p; &a mp;a mp;n bsp; ***

"What the hell?" she thought looking around in confusion. She looked around, at her surroundings as was amazed to find that she was in the Hogwarts Library, of all places!

"Are you alright?" came a voice from above.

She looked up and almost cried out with relief, "Harry!"

"Harry? Who's that?"

"Oh, sorry. So what is your name then?" she asked him disoriented, wondering whether Harry was playing games with her.

"Seriously, you don't know who I am. I find it shocking that you don't know my name. I'm James Potter, Head Boy (appointed by the greatest wizard, Albus Dumbledore), Quidditch Captain for the Gryffindor House team and" he stopped when he saw the new girl looking at him with a baffled expression on her face.

"WHAT?!"

"Okay Hermione, calm down, don't panic," she told herself. She took some deep breathes, counting to ten. Then she peered at him and studied him just for a moment. Indeed, he did not have Harry's lightning bolt scar and instead of Harry's green eyes, had hazel eyes, she noted miserably.

"James Potter and as I was saying hey where're you going?" he shouted in vain as she pushed past him and ran out of the library, her heart pounding.

"No, this can't be happening!" she thought desperately. Someone must have played a very horrible joke on her. And why did Harry just call himself as his father? And why did he refer to Dumbledore? Dumbledore, who was sadly and painfully for them, dead? She kept on running until she slipped and fell down, almost in tears. She sat up and once again looked around. She had come to the Headmaster's office, guarded by the ugly stone gargoyle. She took a cautious step towards it. Finally she closed her eyes and tried to gather her wits. Somehow, she felt calmed down only after a few seconds.

"Liquorice Wands," she tried the password she knew would open the way to the concealed flight of stairs which led to the office. However the gargoyle did not budge from its place and continued staring at her blankly. She tried a few more passwords, her panic increasing with every new word. Finally when she uttered, "Chocolate Frogs", the gargoyle jumped aside. She rushed up the stairs as fast as she could and reached the door to the office. She knocked cautiously.

"Come in," came the reply. She entered the office and gasped at the man sitting behind the desk, his blue eyes twinkling behind his famous half-moon spectacles. Somehow, after her run in with the Harry look-alike, there had been a feeling inside her. She had a gut feeling that she had, somehow, extra-ordinarily went back in time. However, she couldn't conceal her shock at seeing Dumbledore again, albeit a younger one. The wounds of his death had never healed properly and looking at him now, only made her more miserable. The Dumbledore sitting inside certainly looked much more younger than he had been when he had died, his hair and beard were almost white but there were flecks of grey and black in between. "Good morning and you are?" he asked.

Hermione at once looked down, tears flowing down her face. Finally she whispered, "Hermione Granger".

Dumbledore's blue eyes pierced at her. "I don't seem to recollect a student by the name of Hermione Granger," he said peering at her, "yes, I know you are a Hogwarts' student, even though you are not in your uniform," he continued.

"I-I t-think I may've traveled in time," she stuttered, aware that he was using Legilimency.

"I see. What time would that be from?" he questioned.

"Well, the year was 1997."

"Well, Miss Granger, it seems, if my calculation is correct, you have traveled twenty years in to the past". Hermione gasped in shock and could not utter a single word for quite sometime. She had suspected, oh yes she had suspected this, but that did not make it easier for her to accept the truth, when it was lain before her so clearly. "Miss Granger, Hermione, there is nothing to worry about, I'll see to it that you are sent back to your own time," Dumbledore said kindly to her. She gulped.

"I hope so, Professor."

"Take this Hermione," Dumbledore said, handing her a small vial of blue potion, "it will calm you down". She swallowed the potion in one gulp and immediately felt a soothing calmness wash over her. "Now tell me what happened exactly as it occurred," Dumbledore told her. She recounted the events that had occurred during the last half-hour, however making it sound as if they had found the pendant accidentally and not as though they had purposely gone looking for it. Dumbledore listened intently and stroked his beard thoughtfully. When she had finished he said, "You're not giving me the entire truth and yet I don't blame you for that. It will be dangerous for me to know the future, perhaps even more harmful to me than any Dark magic. I will not read your mind again, however, as I am convinced that you are true. As for your situation, I can procure a Time-Turner that will send you twenty years in to the future. However, it will take some time to convince the Ministry as it will need to be a very powerful Time-Turner that will make you to go forward to your time. One turn will be equal to a year in such a Time-Turner. I will try to be as fast as possible."

"How much time?" Hermione asked him.

"I cannot say, it all depends on the Minister. In the meantime, you shall have to continue your education at Hogwarts," he said. Hermione nodded, she had expected as much. "You can either change your complete name or part of it but no one should be able to recognize you."

She searched her memory for a name then she said, "Jane Grayson, Professor. I think I'll have that name."

"I think that will fit in nicely .You can tell the others you are from an obscure wizarding school but moved here due to the fact that Hogwarts is a much larger and useful school. I will give you a set of your text-books which you will use during lessons. What extra subjects were you taking?"

"Care of Magical Creatures, Arithmancy, Ancient Runes," she told after a moment. The truth was, she had never been in seventh year.

"And now, I ask your leave to read your mind one last time, I need to ascertain once again, whether you are not a Death-Eater, even though I don't think you are," Dumbledore told her, "and don't worry, I will only touch upon the outer fringes of your mind."

Dumbledore smiled at her, "I need not have worried. You are truly a Hogwarts' student." "Now, as I see, you are placed in Gryffindor, right?" and when she nodded, "alright, then I shall call the Head Boy, James Potter, who you have already met and who is a Gryffindor also. He shall lead you to your common room. Stick with the story I've given you. If you have any problems, I'm sure our current Head Girl, Lily Evans will be happy to help you. "Also, it is very important that you should refrain from telling anyone, and I mean anyone, even me, much about yourself and the future; especially now that Voldemort's Death Eaters are on the loose. Voldemort, no doubt would find your story interesting," he instructed. It was not long before James came into the office. He jumped when he saw Hermione, and then turned to Dumbledore.

"Professor, you wished to see me?" he asked.

"Yes, James, I would like you to meet Jane Grayson who has just recently been transferred to Hogwarts. She accidentally landed in the library where she had a run in with a slightly violent book." James grinned from ear to ear.

"I should have noticed!" he said.

"She has been sorted into Gryffindor, James. You should probably lead her to the Gryffindor common room. Hermione, as today is Sunday, there are no classes. You can relax and get to know Hogwarts and the rest of the students today. I'll inform the other teachers about your arrival," Dumbledore instructed her. Hermione then went along with James down the staircase.

"So, a violent book huh?" James said teasingly.

"Um- I'm sorry about scaring you in the library," she apologized.

"Apology accepted. But you'll have to answer some of my questions." James said. Hermione cringed inwardly. This was going to be a long day....

Chapter 2
A different Hogwarts

"So this is it! The Gryffindor Common Room, just behind that portrait of the fat woman. She's called 'The Fat Lady' mind you," James rambled on, describing the minute aspects of Hogwarts until Hermione was sick of it. She was trying to be polite and trying to listen but she knew Hogwarts too well to actually be interested in James' description. It was not before James started inquiring about her school that she learnt his true purpose. He was simply trying to find out more about the girls there! Meeting James had slightly unsettled her. She had expected him to be much like Harry, quiet and shy. But James was just the opposite. He was lively, cheerful and talkative.
"Well, here we are," he said, interrupting her thoughts, "the password's 'The Slytherins are dumb'". She raised her eyebrows as the door swung open. James grinned at her and motioned for her to get inside. She entered only to find all the Gryffindors staring at her.
"Everyone, this is Jane Grayson, Hogwarts' newest seventh-year. She has just transferred from her old school," addressed them. Everyone peered at her interestedly. She smiled the best she could, given her current mood, and then decided to escape to her dormitory. She was half-way across the room when she realized she wasn't supposed to know about it. She stopped abruptly and looked around her.

"Excuse me, do you need any help?" a voice said behind her. She turned and was face to face with a round-faced, brown-haired girl with a sweet look about her. It also reminded her strongly of her friend, Neville. It was Alice Longbottom, the woman she had seen in St.Mungo's hospital. Hermione stared at her. She looked so lively, nothing like the wizened, witch that she had seen who was giving Neville sweet wrappers. "Well, do you need any help?" she asked again.

"Yes please. I know Hogwarts has separate dormitories for boys and girls. Only, I don't know which is which," she lied trying not to remember the Alice Longbottom she had seen in the future.

"Don't worry, that's easy. The girls dormitories are reached by the staircase on the right, while the left one is for the boys. Come on, I'm going up too, you can come with me," she said. Hermione nodded and followed her up the stairs. "By the way, I'm Alice Knowles, Gryffindor Prefect. You're Jane, right?"

"Yeah that's right, Jane Grayson."

"Oh yeah, sweet name you have," she remarked politely. They made their way right up to the top of the tower and entered the door marked 'Seventh-Years'. They chatted as Alice showed Hermione her bed and the bathroom and other random things. Then three girls entered the room suddenly. One of them had black hair while the other was a blonde. However Hermione was staring at the last one who had vivid red hair which flew about her as she walked. It had to be Lily Evans, Harry's mother. There was no other word for it, she was beautiful. She was fair with a smattering of freckles on her nose like Ron. She was quite tall and commanded respect. But she had a tired look on her face and the bag that she carried on her shoulders looked heavy. A Head Girl badge, similar to the one Hermione had always dreamt about getting, gleamed on her chest. Each of them looked at her, recognition dawning on their faces. They had mixed reactions. While the black haired girl grinned at her, the blonde girl merely nodded her head. Lily smiled at her.

"This is Caitlyn McDermott, my best friend in the whole world," Alice said gesturing at the black haired girl. "That is Ophelia Patterson, another good friend of mine," she said now pointing at the blonde. "And that is the famous and great Head Girl of Hogwarts!"
Lily rolled her eyes, looking as though she was used to hearing this line by Alice everyday.
"Lily Evans and am not at all famous," Lily said glancing at Alice.

"Well, she is unbeatable in Charms, is she not?" Caitlyn smirked, nudging Lily, "But always second in Transfiguration! Lily rolled her eyes again.

"Well, hi. It's rather an odd time to transfer, is it not? I mean, you must have had to leave behind your friends and come to a whole new place.

"Yeah, I do miss my friends…" Hermione trailed away, thinking about Ron and Harry and where they must be now.

"Oh well, its never too late to start eh? Well, you should rest now, you must be tired, aren't you," Caitlyn said. Everyone nodded their heads in agreement. Hermione was more than happy to sleep. She needed some time to herself as well, away from the other people in the dormitory. She sat on her bed, which was the last one in the room, and drew the curtains around it. She lay down on the bed and again tried not to cry. Yet she couldn't help it, the bizarre events of the day had left her panicky and afraid and Lily's casual statement stung her more than she could have guessed. It was true, she could not help but worry about her two best friends and what they must be doing right now. Probably worried as hell about her, she thought. When she had set out with Harry and Ron (the Golden Trio, in all its glory), she had never thought that she might get separated from them in this strange way; she had always thought that there would be terrible curses and charms who might separate them, not time. Suddenly her parents came into her mind…she missed them too…and Ginny, her best girlfriend.

And yet, what was making her feel the most miserable was seeing all those people, Dumbledore...Alice…James…Lily… They were so alive now, so cheerful, probably worried about nothing much than their NEWTs, Quidditch. And she was painfully aware of their horrible fates. Three dead, or rather, murdered, and one living a sorry excuse for a life. But the thing which scared her the most was that she was all alone in the past. She shook her head, still unable to believe that she had somehow landed up in the past; it was too surreal and nightmarish to be true.

***

She finally fell asleep and woke up after a good three hours. She looked around at her surroundings and judged that it was probably 3 or 4 in the afternoon. She now looked at herself, her clothes were crumpled and yet they looked better than the state they were in when she had walked in Dumbledore's office(Dumbledore having done some patching to her clothes which had been torn in many places due to her adventure). She now felt into her pockets and was dismayed to find that instead of the pendant, which she had expected to be there, it was only her diary which had magically been minimized, when and why, she didn't remember. She tried searching for it in all her pockets but it wasn't there.

"Already lost something?" someone said behind her. She turned to see the blonde girl, Ophelia looking at her with a smirk.

"Um...well, yes. I normally don't lose things but…" Hermione trailed off, all the while thinking hard. If the pendant was not with her, then it must still be in 1997. Hermione was fine with that, infact she would be happy if she didn't see it at all. Then she remembered that Harry and Ron would then have to deal with it and she felt guilty for thinking so.

"Hey, I'm sure you'll find it. Things turn up after a while over here, you know." Said Ophelia, who had been watching her, "nice locket there, by the way. Really pretty and all that," Hermione jerked her head up.

"What?!"

"That locket you're wearing," Ophelia said, pointing at her neck, "it's really beautiful." Hermione looked at her neck and was shocked to see the pendant there. How did it get around my neck without my noticing? She thought, alarmed. And, there was one more thing that she noticed: There was no sensation where the locket touched her skin. That's why she had not found it earlier.

"Where did you get it?" Ophelia asked her now, looking at her curiously.

" 'Twas a gift," she mumbled, still peering at it. Ophelia nodded and then bid her good-bye and left the common room, muttering about food and empty stomachs.

Fifteen minutes after she had gone, Hermione was still trying to see whether she could remove it when Lily came in armed with books.

"Here're your books. Dumbledore told me to give them to you." Hermione accepted the books without any reply.

"Hey and here's your time-table for tomorrow," she said and again Hermione took it without replying, "by the way, have any idea where Ophie is?"

"She went down to the Great Hall, to eat I think," Hermione replied.

"Thanks, I think I'll go there too. Want to come? You looked starved to me," Lily said. Hermione nodded, she had just realized how hungry she was. They went down the staircase.

They exited from the common room and were just walking towards the Great Hall. Lily was just commenting casually about the Hogwarts points system, when they heard a scream. Both jumped and then turned quickly towards the direction from the corridor from where the scream had come from. They looked but could see nothing extra-ordinary. They looked at each other, confused. Hermione shrugged, motioning Lily to go towards the corridor. They entered the corridor and immediately were engulfed in white fumes. They shouted in shock. Hermione flailed her arms around and they found Lily's, which gripped her.

"Wait, I know what this is! Stupid, idiots!" Lily shouted through the fumes which now resembled a fog, still gripping her by the arm.

"Enexplue Emapulae!" Lily shouted and the fog vanished at once. Hermione sighed in relief as the fog disappeared and her vision returned to her. She turned to find an angry Lily.

"I swear those idiots are going to get it this time! And that git being Head Boy and all. Irresponsible, big-headed, arrogant git!" She continued in this vein for all the way to the Great Hall. From her furious diatribe, it was easy to guess who she was abusing so much. So, Hermione thought, I'm seeing my first ever Marauder prank. She shook her head dissapprovingly, the Marauders looked even more troublesome than the Weasley twins and that was saying something. She would have to look out for their pranks now.
Meanwhile, they had reached the Great Hall…
