The sari is nearly extinct. The women of tinseltown, the Filmfare Awards prove, have taken to the gown, while the men are still in suits

Asin

Asin is dressed like she knew she was going to win an award and wanted to make her look a lasting memory. The deep violet is an unexpected colour and the centre seam gives way to a beautiful, flowing panel. She keeps the face and make-up simple and wins all awards in the ensemble section.

Farhan Akhtar

Farhan Akhtar wore a classic three-piece only to remove the jacket, roll up the sleeves when time came to sing to the audience. Why put yourself through jazzy stage costumes when all you have to do is unbutton a little. Kept us panting for more.

Genelia D'souza

The up side is that age is on Genelia's side and she will be able to learn from her mistakes. The down side is that digital photographs last a long, long time. The fish cut did nothing for Beyonce at the Oscars and it does nothing for Genelia here. Since there is nothing else going on in terms of accessories, detailing or colour, we keep coming back to the unflattering cut. At least it fits well, but then, it's a Roberto Cavalli.

Kunal Kapoor

Thank you for reminding us you look just as delicious in a suit. Kunal was wearing slightly boot-cut trousers with a white shit and black tie. All the difference was made by his velvet jacket. As we speak, thousands of copies are being made across the city. If they are not, they should be.

Kareena Kapoor

Oh look, it's Kareena in yet another Manish Malhotra diaphanous sari with crystal and thread embroidery. Yawn. Get with it Bebo.

Arjun & Meher

We know Arjun was the winner later in the night, but Meher won the minute she walked the red carpet in this green gown. She looked like someone had poured molten emeralds over her. Offset by a simple and pearl and emerald neckpiece, we love how it all draws attention to her bare, strong arms. And keep fighting the botox, baby.

Preity Zinta

You recognise the top half, don't you? Priyanka Chopra has two black-lace-over-peach ensembles like it. Abetting Preity's fashion crime is the fishcut, though it isn't as bad as Priyanka. Saved by the hem of your Gauri and Nainika outift,
Preity.

Shreya Ghosal

Shreya is heard more than she is seen, but when she is, she makes some pretty good sartorial choices. A strong colour, flowing lines and one-shoulder silhouette. Simple but remarkable.

Tabu

A flash of floating brown, and everyone was left craning their necks to get a good look at Tabu. Standing head and shoulders above everyone else, the smashing dress was just an accessory to her fluted shoulders. That's the way to
do it.

Imran & Avantika

We love Imran's striped shirt inside the striped suit... and matching trainers. Oh sure it's supposed to be a formal event, but you can't blame a boy for having fun. Avantika is wearing a dress usually seen on six feet plus toothpicks; but she inhabits it with greater confidence and comfort. The colour is unusual and instead of the volume making her look bulky, she looks like a diminutive, floating princess. Take a bow, Archana Kochhar.

Priyanka Chopra

The gown's detailing made the mark only to be brought down by the terrible fish-cut and black panels. The one-shoulder is very now; but Priyanka, anyone who isn't blind can tell those are coloured lenses. Tsk tsk.

The gown Genelia is sporting was worn by Deepika at Zee Cine awards last year. It's also the gown Priyanka sported on Hello magazine spread. Can't say I'm fond of that Cavalli creation at all.

I'm not sure if I like Preity's mermaid-esque dress. Without the flaring part at the bottom, the dress would have looked much better. I'm fairly ambivalent on Avantika's dress as well. Sometimes it looks like the huge barbie cake dresses you'd expect Marie Antoinette to wear (with better colors!!) and sometimes it doesn't look so bad. Tabu looks great (I think I like the metallic blue dress a tad more) as do Meher and Asin(a step up from her last appearance with the cream dress). Priyanka -- underwhelming.

Despite the fairly mundane sari, Kareena looked gorgeous but best dressed would have to be Aishwarya. The Sabyasachi sari, paired with the simple blouse and simple hair style looked stunning on Aishwarya.

I thought Priyanka looked the best - loved her eye makeup too.
Genelia has an amazing figure.
Didnt like what Preity and Asin wore.
Kareena is being monotonous these days. She looks good but even a differnt color saree or a change in hairstyle would be nice.
Kunal and Farhan look great.
Aishwaya's hairstyle made her look like she was 40.
Why cant these stars actually pose on the red carpet like the Oscars ?
They are in such a rush to run down the red carpet.

i have a bone to pick with this author who apprently knows not too much about fashion!

Genelia-looks nice and simple, yes her look doesnt excite but thats not to say its bad....Beyonce's dress didn't work for her because of the BIG GOLDEN PRINT that was on the dress...

Avantika-looks plain horrific, the color is outrageous! nothing one should be wearing to an award show! Looks like a dress an 11 year old would wear to a birthday party!

Preity- takes the cake for being the worst dressed on the carpet! nothing in that dress is working for her, be it the hem or the hair! I mean would u just look at the stomach bulging out, thats completely unacceptable if youre going to wear a body hugging dress.

Priyanka--LOOKED WAYYYYYYYYYYY better than preity, the only thing wrong with her dress was the bottom part, otherwise she worked it like no one else there!

Kareena looked nice, but nothing i would go crazy over, shes beautiful no doubt, but shes beautiful in WHATEVER she wears. But white, for a sari?....nah....Maybe she shouldve opted for a sybashji sari, it wouldve been more vibrant. Manish creations are old and boring now..
