I just watched today's episode.
The scene between Santo and the photographer is one brilliant scene to treasure in many aspects, including the way a young girl's awakening at that her life is not her own, her masti filled childhood is over. Visually, the setting where this scene takes place, seems like ruins of a temple, the earth looks scarred from lack of rain. Santo, a sad figure sitting all huddled up with her head tucked in her arms. A clenched female figure clad in colorful clothing. Refusing to answer or indulge in small talk with the man she perhaps has a small liking for. Maybe. She doesn't know it yet. He wants to make her smile to click her photograph. She remains silent. He misunderstands whose wedding is going to take place, thinking its Khemi's, her elder sister, says some dialogue regarding that a girl does get married when she grows older, he tries to talk to her thinking she is sad because her sister is leaving her. The most saddest part is when he offers her his hand to say goodbye, he is leaving for a few days and she glances at his hand almost moves her hand for a handshake but hesitates. (Santo has grown up). The heartbreaking shot is when she thinks he has left as she doesn't see his figure and she walks towards where he walked away from, thinking he is no more, maybe he was just an illusion. Suddenly, she finds him with his camera aimed at her ready to take a shot of her smiling face filled with all the masti that he encountered on her face the first time he saw her.
I was truly blown away by every aspect of this scene, the setting, the gestures, the underplayed acting, but most of all the authenticity of the scene.
Also, the most striking part is the simplicity of the scene. Its a simple scene of a young girl's by herself, feeling sad at her situation in life.
WOW!! AWESOME!!!
In conclusion, this scene depicted the nuances of the coming of age of a simple, innocent young girl. Her realization that her heart is not hers, her life is not hers, far contrast from the first episode filled with the youthful exhuberant scenes of the mela where Santo was free to dance, to run in the fields, to sing, her life was hers, her heart was hers. This is one of the best scenes I have seen regarding the awakening and crashing of a young girl's unspoken desires, wishes, dreams. Her desires are not hers. The discovery that her life is dictated by others and that it does not belong to her.
Kudos to Ekta and her team in depicting this scene. A splendid job!!
Take Care
