Padikathavan– Movie Review

Behindwoods Movie Review Board

Padikathavan
Movie review

Starring: Dhanush, Tamanna, Vivek.

Direction: Suraj

Music: Mani Sharma

Production: Vijaya productions

Gunslingers flying swords and blood-smeared bodies being tossed around clumsily – Padikathavan opens on a gory note and with intermittent break for love, romance, comedy and family, continues to sustain its violent self. Stripped bare of all its violence and love, the movie rather feels like a reincarnated version of Run, only that Run, with all its violence was rather believable and the love, real.

The banal script is unpretentious in its intentions, however. It lacks clarity and cruises through the million-times-treaded path to culminate into a corny climax, made popular in recent times.

The basic plot is pretty simple - Dhanush is a nonchalant youngster who as opposed to every single soul in the family, has no luck with studies. Addressed as Padikathavan by his family, he takes his role of fixing petty goons rather seriously when his family members crossroads with them. He accidently meets Tamanna and it is love at first sight – which is further substantiated by the duet song in less than 10 seconds of their first meet. A few clichs and songs later, she falls in love with him too. But Tamanna carries a deadly secret with her and Dhanush realizes that he has to fight for his right – Tamanna. Now that means thrashing out zillions of burly and makes-you-squirm-at-sight thugs single handedly. That's not all – Dhanush has a rate for his head too since he earned the wrath of another blood hungry criminal accidentally.

So hacking heads, slashing body parts and throwing grenades at four wheelers are dime a dozen in the movie. Not that those scenes are executed tastefully though.

Dhanush's love affair is clichd but he's largely had a field day. Be it annoying his father by cornering him, scheming plans with his friends to make Tamanna fall in love with him or simply in the stunt scenes – Dhanush has enjoyed his job. But the dialogues, about cussing parents for forcing in studies, could set a bad example. Although her role demands her to break into songs every time she appears in the frame, Tamanna shows convincing abilities. But she has no reason to use it in this movie, sadly.

Prathap Pothen, Shayaji Shinde, Suman and many others appear like junior artistes in the movie. A lion's share of the movie's time is occupied by the grizzly looking tough guys with their red costumes. Vivek, on the other hand, takes possession of the second half and there appears to be no driving factor in the script for the most part. Mani Sharma's tunes are catchy and the rerecording, earsplitting.

On the whole, Padikathavan struggles to identify itself between comedy and violence and ends up not being both.

Verdict – Only for the strong stomachs!

I swear now what is rong with reviewers these days doing really though markings😕..First it was villu saying was horrible which turns out a hit.........and now danush's padikkathavan come on😕...his movie is good i am going watch this movie anyways a fan of Danush and Vivek😃

The pre-release publicity campaign of the film was that it was a laugh riot, but actually the film is in the action genre with a larger-than-life hero who is uneducated and has a tremendous sense of humour.

There is nothing new in director Suraaj's story which seems to have been etched out of various earlier films including Run. It may sound strange, but there is a scene in the film where the heroine Tamaannaah smitten by the hero Dhanush sees him all around her (on Television, newspaper etc) as her mind plays games with her. Two days back we saw the same scene as Nayanthara's saw Vijay in her imaginations in Villu!

Radhakrishnan(Dhanush) alias Rocky is an 10th fail youngster who is looked down upon by his father (Pratap Pothen), as the rest of the family of brothers, sister and sister's-in-law consists of all educated and well placed people. Our hero's main job is to idle away his time in a mechanic shop with his group of friends (Mayilsami, Nellai Siva and others). 'Padikathavan and 10th failed' as his father refers to him, doubles up as a petty goon when his family members are in trouble.

Exclusive: Padikkathavan special!

One of his friends suggest that he falls in love with a highly educated girl, so earnestly he looks around by hovering around women's colleges. So he falls in love with Gayathri (Tamaannah) a rich girl who after a few misunderstandings and dream songs falls for him.

Meanwhile there are some goons after her, as her father is SamarasingaReddy (Suman) a deadly don in Andhra. Our hero saves her from her dad's rival (Sayaji Shinde) and follows to her home in Hyderabad, where he realizes that another Tirunelveli goon Kasi Anandan (Atul Kulkarni) has put a prize on his head!

In the first half, the light hearted comedy of Dhanush is thoroughly enjoyable, especially his one liners and dialogues like Enna mathiri pasangala partha pidikathu. Parka parka thaan pidikkum. However in the second half there is crude comedy of Vivek, especially the scene where Vivek dressed as a woman in a temple pond is pawed by two other comedians under water!

The dialogue that Suman mouths that those who are educated think only of themselves while the uneducated have consideration for his fellowmen is in bad taste especially when the government policy is for total literacy.

Dhanush is in top form as he has never danced so well and has improved a lot in action (the climax fight is outstanding) and comedy while keeping his boy-next-door image intact. He has scored in the first half with his subtle comedy and clever one-liners that gets him the maximum claps.

Tamannaah is pure eye-candy but the romance between the lead pair lacks chemistry. Fine actors like Sayaji Shinde, Suman and Atul Kulkarni and Prathap Pothen are wasted in insipid roles. The songs of Mani Sharma are peppy numbers which will appeal to the masses. The one, picturised in Swiss Alps is hummable

Keep your brains at home and watch the movie as another mass entertainer.

Verdict: Mass masala

KS, word of advise - don't rely on reviewers. Mostly are so biased.
Take for example we went to see Yellam Avan Seiyal and the reviews were all excellent. But to our horror, the movie was nothing like that! It was crap!😡
Haven't you heard, one man's meat is another man's poison?😊
Go and watch this movie with an open mind and write your reviews
Anyway, Thanks for the reviews.
