Girls who could not act to save their skin
The 80s and early 90s saw an influx of some random and mysterious girls who wanted to be divas.
Most of them wore ghastly clothes and make up, gave us ghastly performances, and did ghastly things. And after doing all that to us , they disappeared into anonymity.
I don't really miss them, but over a cup of coffee in the evening, does wonder where they went...what were they here for....
Kimi Katkar
Kimi was one of her kind. She did absolutely trashy films with Govinda, wore clothes as tight as him and squeaked like a rat.
She mistook some hysterical nodding of her head for acting and thought she was the new age Zeenat Aman.
I would confess that although Zeenat had the greatest body ever, she is one of the worst actresses Hindi cinema ever had. Genuinely.
Anyway, to Kimi goes the crown of having the knack of dressing hideously. She wore frilly frocks, pants up her waist, no above that actually, helmet sized glares, ear rings that were heavier than herself, and loud make up.
I will never forget the historic moment when she flew in the sky with Govinda wearing a Spiderman suit, for a song sequence in 'Dariya Dil'. The gravity defying stunt had cinegoers gasping for breath.
But the role that fetched her international...ha ha ha...recognition was of Ruby in the jungle mis-adventure Tarzan.
In the entire film ,she ran around wearing a nighty and teaching Tarzan the 'art of lovemaking'. The film also boasted of rubber crocodiles, stuffed lions,pythons,bears and all that.
The hero of the film , the muscular and over well built Hemant Birje and Kimi actually competed for who has the bigger b***s.
But what made the nation sit up to was Kimi climbing steep mountains with...hold your breath...stilettos !!! We died.
But before she called it quits (much to the country's relief)she gave us the mammoth hit 'Jumma Chumma' in which she looked like a clown who escaped from a circus.
Mandakini
This Raj Kapoor discovery 's only claim to fame was 'Ram Teri Ganga Maili' .
Yes the same Raj Kapoor who specialized in exploring women anatomy in his films in the name of art and aesthetics.
So, here we saw her sit under a waterfall in a white transparent saree. The waterfall was never the same again. As if!
If that wasn't enough , we again saw her in a breastfeeding act. It was so aesthetic again that art, literatue, theories,cinema were all put to shame.
I always felt that Mands was a terrible actress, if an actress she ever was.
Her dean pan expressions where only her eyes moved, the facial muscles remained stiff and no one's ever been able to fathom/conclude from where she mouthed her dialogues!
Her lips moved half a centimeter, that's it.
Post RTGM, she did a spate of horrible films with the likes of Mithun, Govinda & Chunky Pande and made us tear our hair.
Before we could send her a petition to spare us the torture, she got herself enrolled at a don's harem in Dubai.
Then she returned to the arc lights to seek revenge from us , and cut an album for herself (No Vacancy), which I think only she listened to.
Before we could revolt again, she disappeared and is currently running classes in Tibetan Yoga. Whatever that is.
Mamta Kulkarni
This one was a number ya. Mamta's name came to be associated with sleaze and controversies.She just didn't know how to go about her career.
She started out with a decent debut in which she looked as gawky as as a wet kitten.
Then she did insignificant roles in the Tirangas and the Krantiveers. She got her big chance with 'Karan Arjun' but then again she was lost in the melodramatic tale of reincarnation and all that.
The only scene which we took notice of her was the one in which she stood in front of the mirror checking out her assets to ascertain her gender.
I was aghast. How could one be so unsure of one's sexuality?
More insignificant roles followed. And who can forget her by now popular shimmy in 'Maara Re' (Ghatak).
Then she went around saying 'China Gate' will do to my career what 'Sholay' did for Sanjeev Kumar, but alas! While Sholay revolved around Sanjeev Kumar, here it was Mamta revolving around the story.
The last nail on the coffin was of course her act in which she posed topless for a mag. Controversies followed in abundance.
And then like her above two predecessors, she did the vanishing act. We are clueless as to where she is.
One hears she married an NRI and settled abroad. But that's what all the small time actresses do, don't they? The Shilpa Shirodkar type?
I remember more such chicks who came,and before you knew, disappeared. Sonam,Sonu Walia, Neelam,Anu Agarwal, and the list is endless.
