Versatility: A Problem Among Contestants

My SRGMP Mission Continued, I'm on a roll here. 😛

The biggest problem this season is the lack of versatility found among contestants. I feel that although they may excel in their genre, its hard to see them do well in other genres. I feel all the contestants are stuck in that one zone that they started off with. And the judges (ahem, ahem ... Himesh) are supporting that.

Last season, Himesh and Vishal had numerous arguments regarding versatility (remember Mussarat and the ghar-me-roti drama?). Himesh said that they should excel in their genre and follow it instead of attempting songs in other genres which might get them voted off. Vishal said no they should prove that they are a versatile singer, because that's the point of this competition --- finding a playback singer.

Now, I agree with Vishal, this is the point of the show --- otherwise we would have 10 winners, one for each genre. However, Himesh's side applies in one aspect. In the earlier stages of the show, we have new mahagurus every week who judge these singers. Now suppose there is one singer who decides to portray versatility and sings something outside of his/her field and does terribly (but had done fantastic the week before) ... now based on that one performance (not judging past performances) the mahaguru will be forced to kick the contestant out. On the other hand, if one contestant sings in the same genre excellently week after week, he/she will be promoted. And because the mahaguru wasn't there the previous week, they will not know that the contestant is not versatile. Making sense here?

What are you're thoughts on that? Me, personally, I think the contestant should be versatile. All the top notch playback singers today all have one thing in common -- their versatility. Sure, there are singers who sing in just one genre (ie Richa Sharma, RFAK, etc.), but they have lesser songs, and not everyone can reach that height.

Also, out of all the reality shows you have seen, is there one contestant that comes to your mind who you think portrayed versatility?

Infiltrators or virus.😆
Versatality is good but I prefer a singer to be the best in a certain genre.
Nowadays each movie selects several singers to sing different
genres and song types.

yes versatility is important for a singer, but in context of SRGMP, i don't they care. when these contestant do auditions for these shows, they are hardly tested on their versatility. The most important thing they care about is, that the contestant should be audience puller and have a good voice.

so anyone who is a good singer is capable of winning this contest. last year all the three contestants, were very different from each other, and each sang the most well in their own genre. none of them were all rounder. i prefer this than having them sing out of their genre for which they would never get a chance for playback singing.
each voice has it's own texture to it

noone wants an all rounder, but noone wants a one genre singer either.. specializing in 3 genres is enough imo.

Aneek for one, was versatile on the show. Poonam came close but could not make an impact in some genres. I felt they always came up with something better each time. I liked Raja for a while and it was due to him I was hooked to this show. Though later, I preferred Amanat over Raja. Amanat was very good, but just didn't impress me enough to call him versatile.
As playback singers, they have more chances of being corrected in the studio in case they err. However, singing for a live audience is a different ball game altogether. So, I think the current lot of singers are doing a commendable job even though the funny attires given to them screams for more attention than their singing!

At the end of the day only "Versatality" with Capital "V" counts and gives long term success...
If you want to be a fly by night singer than go for one genre 😉 😆
