Chance Marle
Precisely at 6 AM her alarm buzzed until she reached over and turned it off. Pushing the
bedcovers off, Bani eased herself up and then reached over to the side and pulled her
prosthesis up and then set about carefully fastening it to the stump of her left leg.
Carefully she dropped her leg down and then holding onto the edge of the mattress she stood
up. The progress to the bathroom was slow due to stiff muscle.
It took her an hour to brush her teeth, bathe and then dress into her uniform, ready for
work. Bani made her way to the puja room and sat on the chair and joined her mother in
puja. They finished the puja with arti and Bani bent and touched her mother's feet.
Kiran put her hand and blessed her daughter like she did every morning. "May you always be
happy beta."
Bani smiled at her mother, dimples forming on her cheeks.
Kiran served breakfast as Bani sat down and then set about packing lunch as per Bani's
wishes. At 8 AM the doorbell chimed and Kiran rushed off to open the door.
"Good morning Aunty." Pushkar greeted Kiran.
"Good morning Pushkar. Bani is ready. Just give her a minute." Just then Bani came up,
walking slowly, carrying her lunchbox and small bag.
She kissed Kiran on the cheek. 'Bye maa. See you in the evening."
Kiran waved them off, "Bye. Take it easy. Pushkar make sure she eats her lunch on time."
"Yes Aunty." Pushkar answered as he walked with Bani towards his battered old Maruti.
Bani and Pushkar both worked in the same children's hospital, Bani as nurse in the acute
care floor and Pushkar as radiologist. They had been friends since college and had once
they had graduated from their programs, both had ended up working at the same hospital.
The half an hour drive took them through the busy streets of the suburbs of Mumbai. Bani
was grateful she did not have to use the buses for her commute. Pushkar managed to find
parking in the already full staff parking lot. They parted inside the hospital, both of
them going in different directions, Bani towards her designated ward on the first floor and
Pushkar towards the Radiology department.
Half way through the morning, Bani was having a coffee break, when one of her nursing friend
walked up to her. "Hey Bani. How are you?"
"Hi Rano. I am fine. How was your visit home?"
"Great. My mother complained I was too skinny and stuffed me with food everyday. Can't
complain as mom's food is way better than the stuff the cafeteria serves up." Rano opened
up the file she was carrying and looked at Bani with her eyes gleaming, "Are you going to
take part in the Fundraising concert this year? I am hoping you will sing again like last
year. I have too many people wanting to dance."
Bani spluttered on her coffee, "You are too much Rano. You know I can't dance. Sure I will
sing. Just pick a song for me, so I can start practicing."
Rano stood up and gave a laugh, "I already have it picked out, Dance Pe Chance Marle. It my
latest favourite song."
"Par Rano...I can't...I can't sing something like that. Give me something easy." Bani
pleaded with her eyes to Rano.
Rano shook her head, "No way. I know you can sing that just as good as Sunidhi. So get
practising. Please'guess who is the chief guest this year...Jai Walia. Half the female in
the hospital has already reserved front row seat just so they can be near him. It's chance
to impress him and may be you might just get to meet him in person."
Bani gave disgusted look, "I am not signing to impress nobody. I am only singing to help
the hospital raise some money to help some poor desperate parent whose kid is really sick."
"Come on Bani...I am just having fun. But aren't you a little bit excited, India's most
goodlooking bachelor will be sitting right up there front, watching you."
"Get lost Rano." Bani said and stood up, wincing slightly as her prosthesis strap rubbed
against her skin.

Bani waited for Pushkar near his car in the evening. He arrived few minutes later. "Sorry,
got delayed."
Bani smiled, "Don't worry. Guess what song Rano wants me to sing at the fundraiser
concert?"
Pushkar grinned, "Dance pe chance marle...she told me. It's a great song. People will love
it."
"But Pushkar, it's so not my type of song." Bani said as she slid into the seat.
Pushkar drove out of the hospital. "Bani, you can't sing ghazals...there will be some of
the kids who are patients in the hospital will be there. Just make them happy by singing
something they can dance to. In fact my mother starts dancing when she hears that song."
Bani pouted, "Fine...but you are going to help me with practice."
"Any time. Just tell me when. I will bring my karaoke machine over for you."
Kiran held her smile in as she heard Bani whine about what Rano wanted her sing at the
concert. She knew Bani could sing any type of songs, but her favourites where ghazals.
Kiran sympathized with her to make her feel better.
Two days later, Pushkar arrived with his karaoke machine. Kiran stood by the door of Bani's
bedroom as Bani sat on the bed and tried singing few lines of the lyrics. It took her a few
tries before she managed to sing the verse without stumbling.
"Right that is enough for today. I am hungry maa." Bani said looking at Kiran as she
stepped off the bed.
"That didn't sound too bad Bani. I think the song suits your voice and makes your feet tap
just listening to the music." Kiran said as she walked away towards the kitchen.
"See Bani...even your mom likes it." Pushkar said as he put his machine away in the corner,
so it did not come in Bani's way.
Bani glared, "You can stop trying to butter me up. As is I don't have much choice."

A week before the concert, Bani and Rano went shopping for an outfit to wear. After
searching in several shops, Rano spied an off white anarkali suit with a little modern
touch. The dress had short puff sleeves and a scoop neckline and was plain, just lined with
dull zari border. The chudi style pants were embroidered with beads and antique sequins and
a dull gold crushed silk dupatta came with it. Rano helped Bani try it on, helping to ease
the pants over her artificial leg.
The dress looked perfect except her left foot stuck out because Bani wore black flat sneaker
like shoe to mask the black stump.
"It looks perfect Bani. You have to buy it." Rano said enthusiastically. "I have a
jewellery set which will match." Bani looked at her reflection and then looked at her foot.
She sighed. There was nothing she could about her foot, unless she decided to not to wear
the prosthesis and just sat in a wheelchair.
On the evening of the concert Kiran helped Bani into the dress and tears lined her eyes at
she saw how beautiful Bani looked in the dress. Her long black hair complemented the dress,
along with her kohl lined eyes. Suddenly she envisioned Bani dressed as a bride and a tear
rolled down. She shook her head, chasing away a thought that was unlikely to come true.
Three-year back, an accident had robbed her of her husband and left her daughter disabled.
The truck that had slammed into the taxi shared by her husband and Bani, had been driven by
a driver intoxicated by drugs.
The auditorium was full. As usual Bani waited nervously at the back of the stage. Rano and
Pushkar stayed with her to keep her company. When it was Bani's turn, Rano squeezed her
hand and gave her a small push. "Go on...get them dancing and tapping Bani. I will be
dancing here in the back." With butterflies in her stomach, Bani slowly walked on the
stage. A round of applause resounded from her colleagues who worked in the hospital. Bani
smiled and waited for the music to start. As the opening tune started, Bani took a deep
breath and closed her eyes.
Her crystal clear voice filled the air. Unknown to Bani, pair of dark eyes suddenly showed
spark. Jai Walia sat up and stared at the girl'energy seemed to be building up in her voice.
He could hear feet tapping and some whistling and shouts as slowly her voice vibrated with
masti of the song.

When she finished a burst of applause and whistles filled the hall. He watched as she stood
completely still, not believing the reaction to her performance. When Bani left the stage,
he noticed for the first time, her funny walk'the slight uneven way she walked.
Rano and Pushkar hugged her tight. "I knew you would bring the house down. You were
great."
Bani shivered a little, still not believing, she sang the whole song without any hitch.
Bani sat down in a chair'her amputated leg was hurting now. She realized she must have been
really bearing weight down on her prosthesis. The show ended and Bani, Rano and Pushkar
made their way outside the hall. Pushkar left to get his car, leaving Rano and Bani
waiting.
Suddenly a voice spoke very close to Bani. "Ms Dixit'I really enjoyed your singing at the
show." Rano and Bani looked at the same time towards the owner of the voice'Jai Walia. He
extended his hand, "Jai Walia. It's very nice to meet you."
Bani shook his hand nervously. She never imagined the great Jai Walia shaking hands with
her. Jai extended his hand at Rano, "And you are?"
"Rano'I work with Bani in the hospital." Rano shook his hand confidently. "It is very nice
of you come and see the show sir."
Jai arched his brow, "Rano'please call me Jai. It was a pleasure to come and see the talent
the hospital has beside the great work they do for the patient."
"Can I offer you ladies a ride?" Jai Walia asked.
"No'thank you. Our friend is coming with his car." Bani said quickly.
"Bani why don't you take the offer of ride with Mr Walia. I will go with Pushkar. You need
to rest. By the time Pushkar drops me and then you'it will be quiet late."
Jai waited for Bani's response.
After a few moments of hesitation Bani smiled shyly at Jai and said, "If you don't mind, I
will come with you."
"It's no trouble. My car is already waiting outside, shall we?"
Bani gave Rano a hug, "Bye. See you tomorrow."
Rano waved them off with a smile on her face.
The driver opened the door as Jai and Bani approached. Bani felt a little clumsy as she got
into the car. Her prosthesis hampered her, not making it easy to get in. If Jai Walia
noticed anything, he did not say. He made light conversation with Bani, asking her about
her work at the hospital and telling her of his involvement with hospital, serving on the
board of the hospital.
Within short time, the car stood in front of her house. The driver jumped out and opened
the door for her. Bani turned once again to Jai Walia, "Thank you Mr Walia." Jai smiled,
"You are welcome, Good night Ms Dixit."
Jai told the driver to wait until Bani went inside the building. He watched her walk with
that funny walk into the building. Tonight he felt as if he had a relaxed and a stress free
evening in a long time. Usually at most functions, he gets badgered to make speech, hand
out awards etc'today he just sat and be entertained by an enthusiastic bunch of people'of
the highlight was the super singing by the petite girl'who looked almost like an angel in
the white dress she was wearing.
Kiran took in the tired face of Bani as she stepped into their home. "How was the show
beta?" she asked.
"It was great maa. I didn't make a fool of myself." Bani answered.
Kiran kissed her on the forehead, "I didn't think you would. Go freshen up and then you can
have dinner."
Bani changed her clothes and washed her face. She took of her prosthetics and used her
crutch to walk into the kitchen. Kiran gave a quick glance at Bani and then said casually.
"You must be tired. Eat and then go to bed early."
Bani smiled to herself. Her mother had this way of avoiding talking about her artificial
leg. Kiran made up a plate for Bani and set before her. "You should have asked Pushkar to
stop by dinner. I forgot to tell you earlier."
"I didn't come home with Pushkar maa."
"Oh I hope you didn't come on a bus."
"No'someone dropped me." Bani answered.
"Who? Rano?" Kiran asked curiously.
Bani shook her head, "You don't know him. I only met him today. Mr Walia'he was a guest at
our show. He kindly offered to drop me home."
Kiran smiled, "That was nice of him. Where does he live?"
Bani gave a blank look to her mother and shrugged her shoulder. "I don't know. I didn't
ask. We just talked about work."
Pushing her plate away, Bani got up. "Thanks maa. The dinner was tasty."
Bani helped her mother clear up and then went to her bedroom to sleep.
Kiran sat on the bed in her room. She wasn't sleepy and the book she opened up to read, lay
in her lap. Her mind seemed to be curious about the man Bani talked about'wonder what he is
like, she thought. Bani hardly ever talked or showed interest in young men now, yet before
her accident Kiran knew Bani had a few young men as friends.

Jai Walia sat in the board meeting at the hospital. It was almost two months since he had
last been here'two busy months for him, travelling on business, keeping on top of meetings
and work at his offices. Yet the moment he had stepped into the hospital Bani's face
flashed before his eyes. For a moment he was puzzled and then he realized Bani was the girl
he had met at the charity show and that she worked in this hospital. A smile had formed on
his lips, may be he would surprise her by visiting the ward where she worked.
Jai Walia breathed a sigh of relief when the meeting ended. He had to stifle yawn couple of
time because he was getting bored. At the reception he found the where Bani worked and
followed the directions given to him by the girl. He stopped in front of the glass door
leading into the ward. They were locked. Jai waited for a moment to see if there was
anyone passing by whom he could ask if he could see Bani. A doctor walked up and swiped a
security card to open the door. He looked at Jai and asked, "Are you waiting to go in?"
"Yes. I was hoping to see one of the nurses'Bani Dixit."
The doctor smiled, "Come on in then. But you will have to wait in the waiting room. You
are not allowed in the ward unless you are visiting a patient."
Jai waited in the room pointed out by the doctor, flipping through magazines lying around.
It was very quiet on the floor he realized. A tread of soft steps alerted his ears and
looked towards the open door.
Bani gave a curious gaze in the waiting room to see who the visitor was. She wasn't
expecting anyone and was surprised to see Jai Walia.
"Mr Walia'"
"Hi Bani." Jai smiled at her.
Bani smiled, unsure as to why he was here, she asked, "Can I help you with anything Mr
Walia?"
"No'I am sorry. I was here for a board meeting and thought I would come by and see you. I
hope its ok."
"Well I am on duty'" Bani said hesitantly.
"Sorry'I should have thought of that. What time do you finish? I can pick you up'may be we
can go for dinner."
Confusion swept through Bani's mind. She wanted to say no'yet a part of her hinted yes.
Jai seemed to sense her hesitation. He gave a perceptive smile, "You can say no Bani'I
understand if it not convenient."
Bani shook her head, "It's just that my mother will be expecting me for dinner."
"Well may be another time. Can I get your phone number? I can call you when I have some
free time and we can meet up."
"Why do you want to see me again Mr Walia?" Bani asked, she somehow wanted to know why he
was keen on seeing her again.
Jai gave her a genuine smile, "How about because I really like you?"
His answer made her blush and she looked away. Silence fell between them, until Jai cleared
his throat. "I hope it's a good enough reason."
Bani slowly raised her face and looked at him. "I am sorry'it's silly of me to have asked."
"So can I call you?" Jai asked again.
Bani nodded her head and gave him her number. She walked with him up to door and watched
him leave.
When Rano walked past Bani, sitting behind the desk in deep thought. Bani did not even
acknowledge Rano's voice. Rano waved her hand in front of Bani's eyes, "Hey dozy'where are
you? It's not like you to daydream."
Bani broke out of her thinking, "Hi Rano. Sorry was just thinking."
"What'who'were you thinking about?" Rano asked.
Bani smiled, feeling she needed to confide in someone and who better than Rano. "Do you
remember Mr Walia?"
"How can I forget him? Who can forget him, once they have seen him." And then giving Bani
a sharp look, "You were thinking about him were you?"
Bani shook her head, "Not really. But he came to see me today and asked me out for
dinner'and before you get any idea I said no."
Rano almost fell backwards, her eyes wide with shock, "You said no to dinner with him'what
is wrong with you?" she screamed.
"Nothing! I am just being cautious." Bani said pokerfaced.
"Par, he is such a hunk. And you gave an opportunity to spend time with him." Rano shook
her head in disbelief.
"You know why I wouldn't be comfortable seeing him." Bani said quietly.
Rano sat down near her and put an arm around him, "hey'you shouldn't just assume things.
Who knows may be he might be understanding'you can't let yourself be deprived of doing
normal things."
Bani's voice shook slightly, "It's not that easy. I try to forget'but you think'" she
paused and looked down at her artificial leg covered by the uniform, "it's easy to forget
that lost part of my leg."
All Rano could do was hug her.

A month had gone by before Jai Walia phoned Bani. Bani was in the bathroom. Kiran answered
the phone. "Hello."
"Bani'it's Jai Walia."
Kiran almost chuckled, it was funny how people couldn't tell her or Bani's voice apart. She
gave a soft laugh and said, "Actually, this is Bani's mother. If you just hold on. I will
get her."
Kiran put the phone down and walked to the bathroom. "Bani there is a phone call for you."
"Thanks maa, I am coming." Bani wiped her face quickly and followed her mother to the room
and picked up the phone. "Hello." Bani said.
Jai breathed deeply, "Hi Bani'it's Jai Walia."
Bani coloured slightly, "How are'you Mr Walia?" she asked. Bani could feel her mother
watching her back.
"Fine. I called to ask you if you had an afternoon free'for lunch."
A pause followed, "Bani." he said into the phone. Bani looked at her mother, "Just one
minute Mr Walia." She put her hand over the mouthpiece. "Maa, is it ok if I go out for
lunch today?" Kiran smiled, 'Of course, you don't' have to ask."
Bani turned back and spoke, 'Yes Mr Walia. I have this afternoon free."
Jai heaved a sigh of relief, "Great. Can I pick you up at twelve?"
"Yes. Thank you." Bani put the phone down when she heard the phone cut off.
Kiran arched her brow, "Well are you going to tell me about him now?"
Bani felt her cheeks burn, "Maa'" Kiran laughed, "Fine'but at least let me meet him once."
Bani nodded.
Ten minutes before noon, Bani was standing outside the building waiting for her ride. She
had put on a dark pink salwaar suit and tied her long hair back. Her mother had insisted
Bani should at least use kohl on her eyes and a light lipstick.
Right on twelve, a black Mercedes pulled up. The driver smiled as he opened the door for
her. Bani got in car. "Hi Mr Walia."
"Hi Bani." he returned her greeting. Bani noted he wasn't wearing a business suit, but a
casual pant and shirt.
"We will have lunch at my restaurant. I think you will like it." Jai said casually.
Bani just gave a shy smile. She was overwhelmed when the car pulled up outside the elegant
hotel near the beach. Inside people acknowledged Jai as he made his way with her towards
the restaurants. Bani drew curious stares from the employees.
The butterflies in her stomach disappeared as Bani relaxed. She enjoyed the lunch, finding
herself asking him questions regarding his business. It was almost two when Jai asked if
she wanted to go for a walk on the beach.
Bani shook her head and declined. "Thank you for the lunch Mr Walia. I think I should leave
now." Jai hid his disappointment. "My car will drop you Bani. I hope we can do this
again." Bani looked at him seriously, "There is something I should tell you Mr Walia. It
would be better if you know now. I was involved in an accident three years back." She
paused, "I lost my father and I'I lost part of my leg'left leg. The taxi I was travelling
in was hit by a truck." When she looked up at him, he could see tears lining her eyes.
Bani stared at him, hoping to see pity in his eyes, but instead he smiled and leaned forward
and took her hand. "Thanks for telling me. I know how hard that must have been'to be
honest. It doesn't change anything Bani'I think I would still like to see you again."
Bani could not stop the tears from rolling down her cheeks.

Kiran smiled at Jai as he made himself comfortable on the well-worn sofa in her tiny sitting
room. Bani had stepped into the kitchen to make coffee. After some nagging, Bani had
finally asked Jai to drop in for coffee so that her mother could meet him.
Kiran started off by asking him about his family and by the time Bani came back with a tray
of coffee, Kiran and Jai were happily chatting away. Bani set the tray down and handed Jai
his coffee.
They drank their coffee in silence, until Kiran stood up and said, "You know Jai why don't
you stay for dinner. Bani is going to go to movies with her friends, may be you can go with
her." Bani gave her mother a dark look, how could her mother do this? She and Rano had
planned this some days ago and now her mother was inviting Jai to go with them. She
breathed a sigh of relief when he turned it down, "I can't stay Mrs Dixit. I have a family
event that I need to go to."
When Jai left, Bani turned on her mother, "Maa'what are you trying to do? You don't need to
shove him at me all the time. Just don't try and spoil my friendship with him."
Kiran felt hurt by Bani's accusation. "Bani'I thought it would be nice to invite him to
have dinner with us, just a way of thanking him. He is a nice person. There is nothing
pretentious about him." Kiran walked away from Bani, hiding the tears that threaten to
fall. What was wrong in her wishing some happiness for her daughter?

Jai Walia sat among his family at the birthday party held for his sister's daughter, Anu.
It was Anu's sixteenth birthday party. Sudden realization him, his sister's children were
almost grown up now. Ranveer the eldest was already nineteen and Anu sixteen'and he was
still unmarried. Jai looked at his sister busy looking after the guests, she was just two
years older than him and Adi his brother-in-law, though older than him, looked younger than
him. Adi's happy go personality seemed to keep his hair from greying it seems.
Adi slapped Jai on the back, "Where are you Jai? I have asked you twice if you want another
drink, but no answer." Jai smiled at his brother-in-law. "Just thinking Adi, how quick the
kids have grown."
Adi laughed, "Yes'it seems not long ago I was still rocking them to sleep and now they are
all grown up. But why are you thinking about that? Not feeling old are you?"
Jai nodded, "Yes. Just wondering where the time has gone."
"Time never stands still my friend. That is why I have been telling you to get married.
You should have a family of your own, before those grey hair cover all your head." Adi
tugged at the strand of grey hairs on Jai's head.
"Ouch Adi it hurts." Jai complained.
Adi leaned close to him, "Believe me it doesn't hurt as much as when you biwi tells you
off."
"What are you whispering to my brother, Aditya Bani?" Jigyasa asked rather loudly. Adi
looking sheepishly at her, "Nothing. Just telling him he should get a wife soon."
Jigyasa smiled at Jai, "Yes Jai'about time you got married. I want you married before
Ranveer. Not having you as a bachelor when Ranveer gets married."
Jai gave a tight smile to his sister, "I will'don't worry. Just let me find a suitable
girl." Jigyasa came and sat down next to him. "I have know some really nice girls who
would make you good wife Jai'some of my friends are looking for a good match." Adi shook
his head at Jai behind Jigyasa.
Jai smothered a laugh. "Thank you Jigyasa. But I think I can find my own girl." Adi gave
thumbs up sign at Jai. Jigyasa turned around sharply and gave Adi a glare. 'You are no
help Adi'stop interfering." Adi just gave her saccharine sweet smile and walked off to get
drinks.

Jai Walia sat in his bedroom. He pulled out the velvet box and opened it. The diamond
solitaire stared back at him. The round brilliant cut stone sat in a platinum band. Was he
doing the right thing? He had told Adi about Bani and his intention of proposing to her.
Adi had been all for it. Even when Jai told her about her disability, Adi had looked
proudly at Jai and told him the same'he was proud to have Jai as his brother-in-law.
Tonight he was picking Bani up at eight and taking her out for dinner. It had taken him a
week to muster up courage and invite her.
Jai rang the doorbell to Bani's apartment. Kiran opened it and smiled at him. "Come in Jai.
She is almost ready."
Bani came out of her room a few minutes later. He couldn't help but stare at her. She was
wearing dark brown chiffon salwaar suit, with cream coloured embroidery and a cream coloured
dupatta. It was simple yet elegant. Bani pushed her hair back behind her ear and smiled at
him.
Kiran looked out of her balcony and watched the car drive away.
Bani was pleasantly surprised when instead of being seated in the regular section of the
restaurant, they were shown into a private room, where a table was laid out with roses in
the center and burning candles. Jai pulled a chair our for her to seat.
"Do you like it?" Jai asked her nervously, his eyes glittering bright in the candle light.
Bani nodded, "Yes, its nice. But why a private toom?"
"Because'" Jai knelt down in front of her and took her hand. He gave a nervous laugh. "You
would think someone would like me would find it easy to say something simple." Bani gave a
confused look.
Jai gripped her hand tight, "Bani'" He took a deep breath, "Will you marry me?" Jai pulled
out the velvet box and opened it. "I even got the ring'I hope you like it."
Bani stared at the ring and then at him. Her pulse was beating rapidly and she felt tremors
in her stomach. Jai stood up, "Say something Bani'even if it's a no. I will understand."
Her eyes shimmered with tears, she shook her head, trying to let it sink that he had just
proposed to her. Holding on to the table she stood up. Jai felt his stomach sink, afraid
she was going to walk out. Instead, Bani took the box from his hand and took the ring out
and held it out to him along with her hand.
Like a robot Jai took the ring and placed it on her finger. Bani gave him a shy smile,
"Well'say something Jai." She said.
With a swift swoop, he picked her up in his arms and twirled her around. When he set her
down, they were both laughing. Jai leaned over and kissed her forehead. A shiver ran down
Bani's spine as the touch of his lips. He took her hand and gazed into her bright eyes.
"Did I ever tell you how beautiful you look Bani?" Bani shook her head. "How terrible of
me! You look gorgeous tonight and I am falling madly in love with you."
Tears sparkled in her eyes as he hugged her.
