PART 4
Recap: He paced as the thoughts came flooding into his mind. He needed to woo Ridhima, and make her fall in love with him, to such an extent that she would come under his influence, 'Yes Armaan, did you forget your BDA tender defeat ? The shame ? The insult ? No Armaan. This is revenge. And purely professional'
His lips curved into a smirk as he felt himself come out of the brief moment of weakness, 'Yes Ridhima Gupta, We will have fun..'
*********************************************
Ridhima walked inside her house, and dropped the keys in the key basket. It had been a tiring night. Not physically, but mentally. Business parties always ended up tiring her out. Although she was used to faking her emotions, but it always left her feeling weary. At times she wished she had a friend she could confide into, and simply be herself. But she knew better than to expect a miracle like that. Real friends were impossible to find. Specially in the corporate world. Especially for a woman.
As she slowly walked inside her house, her mind reeled back to the brief meeting with Armaan Mallik. She knew he had tried to do what all other men had. Tried to make her fall for him and then slowly take over her business. She had been subjected to the same trick so many times that now she had become immune to it. She fell for it once when she had entered the business world in the beginning, but never after that. Time had acted as her teacher. And her experience was her education.
Retrieving a water bottle from the fridge, she let her mind wander to her past, the time when she resolved to make it big in the corporate world....
Ridhima Gupta sat in her chawl, legs clutched to her chest. She was in a trance, unaware of the light wind that made her hair fall across her eyes. She didn't bother to put it behind her ears.
After the babysitting incident, Ridhima had been shattered. She had almost been raped that night. The thought still sent a chill down her spine. Had the man not been drunk, she would now have been devoid of any self respect. Staring into his eyes, Ridhima knew that he was not going to let her go, she closed her eyes in fear and said a little prayer to god. God didn't disappoint her. The man suddenly collapsed on top of her, unconcious. A strong wave of relief went through Ridhima.
She wriggled out of his grip, still trembling with fear. She draped her sari in such a way that it hid the torn blouse, and quickly walked out of the house, wanting nothing more than to move out from his immediate vicinity.
She walked into the night, soaked in perspiration. Fear still swirled in her mind as she kept glancing backwards again and again to see of someone was following her. Clutching her sari tightly to herself, she quickened her steps. Finally an autorickshaw came into view, she hailed it and gave the driver the address to her chawl.
She ran inside the cramped room. Shutting her door behind her, she slid down and held her face in her hands. A tear rolled down her cheek. Another one. And another one. She broke down as violent sobs wreaked her body. Curling herself into a ball, she continued to cry helplessly until all energy was drained from her body. The thought of what almost happened today sent a torrent of dread down her mind.
She didn't realize when weariness took control of her body and she slept.
Next morning, when Ridhima got up, she felt strangely different. That one incident had broken her, but it had also made her stronger in alot of ways. She looked at herself in the mirror, and she saw a disheveled reflection staring back at her. Her lips were dry, her hair was unkempt, her clothes dirty and crimpled, weight loss clearly visible. It was the sight of a woman who had lost the race of life. No, she thought, I've had enough. This cannot go on. This will not go on. I will not let people walk over me and leave their shit behind.
A surge of inexplicable rage built inside her. Rage towards her in-laws, rage towards her family, rage towards the b****d who had tried to rape her, rage towards destiny. But I'm going to change it, I'm going to change my fate. This resolution seemed to make her feel better. She felt as though she had just found her path. As though light had finally been shed on something she had been looking for all her life. In her mind, a lone and solitary door slowly creaked open. The door to success.
The first step would be to retrieve her degree from her parent's house. No matter how reluctant she want to go back to that place, she knew she needed something to show her credibility. She steeled herself to do something that had emotional implications. She had to do this.
Next day, she hailed an auto and gave the address to her parent's house....
She blinked, breaking the chain of past memories that reeled through her mind. Strangely, her past incidents had now ceased to bring tears to her eyes. She had become so hollow that now no emotion could move her. Her only goal in life was to earn so much money that it would overflow. She wanted people to bow down to her when they addressed her, whether out of fear or out of respect, she didn't care. She wanted retribution, and she would get it.
And now, the best player in the corporate world, had finally sensed her presence, and she was sure she was already on his list of 'Prospective dangers'. He had fished out the basic card to rope to her in. She smirked inwardly. Inspite of her knowledge of business tactics, she knew Armaan Mallik wasn't considered at the THE Mallik for nothing. He wouldn't stop playing. And neither would she.
*************************************
Armaan sat in his room, toying with the card he held in his hand. It was the business card of Gupta Enterprises. Although, Ridhima's mobile number wasn't there, obviously he needed an appointment to talk to her, he felt maybe he should do just that.
Armaan sensed danger the moment he set his eyes on Ridhima. This wasn't a woman who would fall for him so easily. He had to take things slow. He sighed and looked at the card. Making up his mind, he picked his mobile up and dialled the number. A woman picked up the phone.
'Gupta Enterprises. How may I help you ?'
She sounded tired. As if she wanted this to get ove soon and go back home. Armaan glanced at the clock hanging on the wall, indeed, it was quite late.
"Hello, This is Armaan Mallik on this side."
There was silence on the other end. After a few moments, the woman's voice sounded, "Y-Yes, Mr. Mallik. What can I do for you?"
Armaan smiled as he realized that his call had taken her by surprise. Obviously no company would expect to get a call from it's competiter at 12 am at night, "Hi, I need an appointment with Ms. Gupta...sometime for tomorrow"
The woman still seemed to be surprised, because all weariness had suddenly vanished from her voice, "Can you hold on for a minute Mr. Mallik ? I need to cosult Ms. Gupta"
Armaan smirked even more, "Sure.."
A minute passed. Armaan was beginning to think that Ridhima probably declined the offer, when suddenly the woman picked up the phone, "Sorry to keep you waiting Mr. Mallik. Your appointment has been confirmed for 4 pm for tomorrow evening. Is that ok ?"
Yes!, Armaan thought as his grin widened, "Yeah, No problem...and thanks"
"No problem Mr. Mallik. Thankyou and have a good night", the line on the other side clicked, giving way to a beep, indicating that the line had been disconnected.
Armaan had a smug look on his face. He was a man on a mission. Ridhima Gupta is mine, he thought, and so is her business. He didn't know what he was going to say to her to her the next day, but he had a good feeling about this.
***************************************
Ridhima got into her bed, thinking about tomorrow's 'appointment' with Armaan Mallik. She wondered what it was about, and then she remembered her judgement - He would never stop trying. She couldn't help but smile. Although it was just another game, she felt she was going to enjoy it since her rival was competant.
Something told her that Armaan and her were going to become long term acquaintances tomorrow.
