Hussain Kuwajerwala can currently be seen hosting the latest season of Indian Idol. However, this time his partner Mini Mathur is missing from action. Instead last year's contestant Chang is Hussain's co-host.
We spoke to Hussain about his new co-host, inspiring the contestants and handling the volatile judges.
On Chang: The biggest difference for me is that Chang is my partner in this season and Mini is not there. I do miss her but we definitely have a good rapport with each other now. I am saying this not because he is standing next to me but this is my honest opinion as well. I always tell him that if I would have been at your place, like I was a contestant in the show and next year if they would have offered me hosting, I would have not been half as good as you. The way you are managing it is commendable and I know after listening to this he will laugh. As an anchor I know it is tough as I have been doing it from years. But if somebody is matching me and doing a good job, then I need to compliment him."
On managing his judges: We naturally come to know about who has performed very well and who has not but when both of them (Jaaved Akhtar and Anu Maleik) disagree on anyone's performance then I too get confused about whether that person has really performed well or not. Their comments are always unpredictable.
On being able to judge the contestant himself: As a member of the audience I too can say whether it was a good performance. But I do not have knowledge of music. Our work is to build an atmosphere especially when there is no elimination; we need to make them enjoy performances.
On his hosting mantra: I just try to create positive energy. You have to make people comfortable. We too get nervous but today's generation is quite smart and they come with all sorts of experience. They are bold but then sometimes they talk about things which they should not have about and then they realize it later….
