Please post character sketches of Ramayana

An example of character sketch:-

The character sketch you cited was from a fictional TV show 'Balika Vadhu', where the whole thing was written and made for TV: there is nothing 'factually incorrect' about it. But in this case, the Ramayan, there are two entities:

1. The original epic, as per Valmiki and a whole bunch of vernacular versions, such as Kamban, Tulsidas, Krittivas, et al

2. The epic as depicted in this serial.

So if one wants to do a character sketch, say, on Vali, does one have to accept the storyline as depicted in this serial, or as according to the original writings? For instance, in this serial, Vali's role as a womanizer is highlighted, while there is nothing like it in the original Ramayan, beyond his imprisoning Roma and preventing her from leaving with Sugriv. Similarly, in this serial, Mayavi is depicted as the righteous rakshasha who wants to avenge his wife's molestation, whereas in the original epic, Mayavi challenged Vali because he wanted to avenge Dundubhi's death.

So when you are calling for character sketches here, which of the above exactly do you have in mind?

Good job on Kumbhakarna and Meghnad.

Not to discount anything you've done here, but there are downsides with Wiki, not the least being that one can edit anything that one doesn't like. Also, some of the things there are completely unheard of and unsupported in any of the epics.

To illustrate my point, here is Manthara from Wiki: [Note: this is Wiki's version, not mine!]

Manthara, (also Kooni in some versions) in the Hindu epic Ramayana, is a servant who convinced Kaikeyi that the throne of Ayodhya belonged to her son Bharata and that Rama should be exiled from the kingdom.

In one version of the story, Indra, the king of devas, asks Manthara to convince Kaikeyi to ask Dasharatha to exile Rama, because only when Rama is exiled will he face Ravana and kill him. Although Manthara agrees to do Indra's bidding, she curses Indra that, for the wrong he made to Rama, he would never be prayed to by any Hindu family. This is claimed to be the reason why Indra, despite being king of the devas, is never worshipped in any temple or family.[citation needed]

Your question is very apt. As I understand, the character sketch should be as per what is being shown in the serial. But if we write something, which contradicts the epic, then some people may get wrong information because they may think that the epic says this.

On the other hand, if we write something from the epic, but which contradicts what is being shown, then this will also be misleading.

So what to do?

I think the best is to only write what is common between the epic and the serial. Leave the rest. Regarding epic, I understand that there are many versions. But it is best to consider only most famous versions, which I think, are:-

Valmiki Ramayan

Tulsidas's Ramacharitmanas

Kamban Ramayanam
