Hi all now a days internet has become a part of everyone's life. Internet is filled with both good and bad things and any informations from any part of the world is accessible to anyone easily. We know that children have a familiarity with computers at very young ages, and that sometimes children going into kindergarten can have a sophistication with computers that far outpaces even their parents'. One has to be careful, then, with how they allow those kids to use the Internet.

My question is Shud Kids be allowed to use internet and if yes at what they shud be allowed to use internet. If you are a parent will you allow you kids use internet, will you monitor you kids internet usage or will allow to use unmonitored. At what age you think its ideal for allowing the kids to use internet.
  • Is it good to allow kids use internet chat rooms/ social networking sites

That was an interesting topic , anna...well done 😃 Internet is a kool place, lots of kids need it for their schoolwork, to research etc so they should be allowed to use the net, but parents should def be aware of what their kids do on the net..there is many ways to do that like setting up rules, never allow the kids to be alone on the net, no chatting, spl many kids are into msn and chatting..and even goes to chatting room..they should be forbid and blocked and create a use account with limited acces. I know I had limited access until i was 15 or 16 but todays kids are too smart to the parents should be very carefulšŸ˜‰

Thanks Isai for starting this topic.
Children should be allowed to use the computer, but parents should keep an eye on them. With lots of information floating in net, one should be careful on how much a child should allowed to be exposed.
In my household, my 2 nephews, who are 6 and 9 are allowed to use the computer 2-3 times a week and they are allowed to download free games for relaxation. They are allowed to play for 1 hour only. If they have completed their homework/studies, then Karthi rewards them by giving them extra 1/2 hour. However, if they are mischeivous then she cuts 5 mins from the allowed time.
Some parents over indulge their children to the extend they do not monitor their children time on net.
This is a sad story I want to share with you guys. Last year a 12 years old brilliant boy committed suicide. Apparently, when he was doing well in school, the parents rewarded him with computer and all the software he wanted. The boy spent full time in his room to the extend eating in his room. Later his marks began to drop and the parents were not happy about it, and also he was leading a unhealthy life. He does not even watch t.v. So the parents made some rules for him to follow. At the same time, he wanted some new software (I believe it was some games), which his parents refused to purchase. This little boy got very upset that the parents are not allowing him to play with his computer nor buying him new software decided to Electrocute himself with the wires from the computer and he did something to it and next thing you know he was dead. He left a note behind to his parents by saying how devastated he was that they cut his hours and did not get the soft ware he wanted.
Poor parents, how do you think they felt that their only son who is 12 has committed suicide. It was in the local paper.
This should be a lesson to all parents - monitor the usage of computer and internet. Most important of all - never let them in chat room until they are 15 and have good knowledge of the do's and don'ts before chatting.

Computers should not be at kids room, it should be in a common room.

i agree 100% meli
i let my daughter 5 yrs old to go but my husband had installed the program so she can only go to the kids site. anyway for her i select where she want to go. sometimes my nieces try to go the other sites it will ask the password. again if you are smart you can by pass it. i only let her go on the weekends for a 1 hour or little more.
one of my nices is 15 she is kind of addit to the msn chat - my sister gives ger the time limit . they go chat while they are doing their homework. big kids can cheat parents easily. one time my sister ask her to give all of his friends names my niece didn't like it . she told me that her mom didn't trust her thatswhy she asked the names. i told her i would do the same thing. we can't trust them blindly. it can backfire on us . i know these internet and computer makes me afraid for the next generation. free inormation about anything you can lie easily nobody knows whether you are girl or boy or young or old.

Brandon Crisp's Father Finally Breaks Silence, As Family And Friends Prepare To Say Final Farewell To Teen

Thursday November 13, 2008
Brandon ran away from his home on Thanksgiving after getting into a fight with his parents over his video game playing, which his parents feared he was addicted to. He was spotted twice on the day he went missing, but then the trail went cold until November 5 when hunters discovered his body. The 15-year-old had died of massive chest injuries, believed to have been sustained in a fall from a tree.
this is from today's paper - see how addited kids are for the games and computer

thanks isai for the interesting thread.

parents should keep an eye on young children, but when they're slightly older (12+) they should be given some freedom to do things on their own! 😃
Ennoda side-la irunnthu oru more serious story from one of the tamil magazines.. from what i could remember it's about three young children (aged 12-16, different parts of the world) commiting sucide, but that too at the same time and watching each other die via webcam! they did this in order to take revenge on their parents and to have a better life after death.. 😭

Everyone should have freedom, but with freedom there should be discipline. And at 12-17 - kolapangal period for any teenager. That is the period, y our parents don't understand you, don't love you, you are grown up, etc. etc. There should be some kind of guidance/ discipline. I rather be a bad aunty and make my nephews life safe, then they fall for traps or lured into illegal activities.

Besides what Sri & Kalki wrote, there are lot of stories which are so unbelievable yet it is true. I watched a movie based on true story about a mum acted like a teenager and helped the police to trap paedhopiles in Canada. This is after she found her 15 years old daughter was in chat room and which looked suspicous to her. She got a shock of her life when she found her daughter's chat mate was 50 odd old man, who came to her house!
I read so much of stories like this before. To avoid this, parents must monitor the usage of computer by their kids. Meli, you are right computer should be in common area. We have ours in common area too. Password is needed as what Kalki said. You sometimes don't know what po*n pics open up in front of you.
In Malaysia, children go to net cafe and stayed right through the night. Parents did not know they were there (or could not careless). Then the Police raided the cafes only to find the kids were watching po*n pics or some illegal activities. Took them to police station and called the parents at 2 am in the morning to come and pick the kids from the station.
After that there was ruling, net cafes owners should close down at 12, that they should not allow kids/teenagers to stay at long hours or kids in uniform are not allowed. If net cafe owners are found revoking all the rules and regulations, then the license will be revoked.
