"Whatever keeps my fans happy is ok with me"
Nilakshi Sharma
Ram Kapoor the actor behind the iconic television character, Jai Walia of KasamSe finds the time to have a free wheeling chat with Nilakshi Sharma about varied things, such as fans, creative satisfaction, his sex appeal and ramprachirock.com, his official fan website created especially by his fans. And it was a group of fans from RPR (as the website is fondly referred to by members) that he found the time to meet with on his birthday in New York. Being treated to a birthday cake by an entire Harem, sounds rather fun.
Would you please explain the term harem and how was the cake? It was awesome to meet everyone there; they were just a lovely bunch of people. It was an overwhelming experience. I don't think I would call them a harem, these are just people who are kind enough love my work. As for the cake, it was fantastic I ate like a bite, but my wife ate an entire piece and she was ranting and raving about it.
How was it to meet fans dedicated enough to start a website dedicated entirely to you and organize all of that including A scrumptious cheesecake? It's something that one can never get used to, it's nice to have a following like this and I am sure every successful actor has a fan following. I have never come across people who are willing to do so much or take so much time out of their day-to-day routine and set up something like this. Something like a website requires so much work and requires to be looked at for it to go in the right way and these people are really doing that. That is something I can never get used to and that's why it's a little hard to believe. I firmly believe that an actor is nothing without his fans if it wasn't for all these people wouldn't be where I am because if your fans don't accept you and your work then you are not going to be successful; it's as simple as that.
So how is possible to disregard people who have made you what you are? It's something I would never be able to do.
How did you know they were not going to be a bunch of psycho stalkers? (Laughs delightedly before replying) I am a fairly good judge of people on the whole and I had lots of conversations on the phone with Farah - the founder of the website - for the past year before we finally met and I could tell from our conversations and the way she spoke and the amount of work she was willing to put in I could tell that she was not a psycho stalker kind of a person. It was very clear that who ever she had organized as part of the site would be similar to her and so it was pretty much a no brainer for me!
Your most famous character: Jai Walia. A woman would have to be both, slightly masochistic and a sacrificial lamb to love such a man and yet he became beloved by women across the country. Why do you think that happened? This is something that is very hard to answer because if people knew why characters became a hit there would not be any flop characters out there. It's not something you can put a label on.
So you think the people who loved the character of JW have masochistic tendencies? No I will take the fifth on that one.
You're not an American; you can't take the Fifth Amendment! Listen, I have been a student in America for four years I can take the fifth.
This is a JW thing and he has not been to America so you can't plead the fifth. I don't think they are masochistic, I think they are justwant to believe that in this surreal make believe world there are characters that can exist like JW. He's got everything he is rich, he is powerful. Arrogant with a good heart, I think they like seeing himmake mistakes again and again, but he is willing to apologize when he is wrong and he has a good heart.
How much of a role in the success of the character did your personality play? I don't know, I guess…the training that I received when I went to acting school taught me to bring as much of the character into your real self as possible. So I did try to do that. I do have similarities to the character of JW, in the sense I am arrogant and all that, but I don't have as much as a temper as he does. It's very difficult for someone to label their own sex appeal; this is something that others can do for you. When I look atmyself I think I have zero sex appeal and all my sex appeal comes from my work.
Can you really say with a straight face that you have zero sex appeal? I honestly believe so, look at Hrithik. He has said very clearly that he is not a good dancer. It's the same thing. I do not see any reason for women to find me sexy because if I was thinking along those lines I think I would stop my growth as a person and as an ctor I have to just continue being the way I am and continue trying to better myself more and more. Now along that if my fans eem to like it that's just great for me, but if I start dwelling on that I am not helping myself in any way.
But what happens when the character becomes weird or unbelievable? If we get into the nitty gritty of this then there is lots of nitpicking one can do, but it doesn't change the foundation that was laid, when the show started and the first 2 years of the show. The basic character that was developed and liked by the people, that foundation is strong and solid enough for me to work on. As an actor when I get a scene I can change it to a certain extent, but I cannot change the storyline. They have found this character of JW to be a hit, now they are going to hit this character with everything they can because they realize that the people who are watching are watching for the trials and tribulations of this character because its bringing them results. It's because of that he is having to go through really weird situations, it can't be helped because when you have a story that keeps going on and on it becomes difficult to keep it interesting, when somebody writes a movie or a novel it has a beginning middle and an end. So the story stays crisp and concise and tight. In TV, especially in daily soaps they always go the same route, it will get more and more ridiculous as time passes, there is nothing that cam be done about that. So when I go to my work, I just forget about all that and I concentrate on the scene and try to make it as good as I can. I don't dwell on the negative.
